Could your child benefit from some extra practice and academic help this Summer?
We still have a few spots open for our Summer 2023 Elevate Academy!
Elevate Academy will begin on June 26th, 2023 and end on July 27th, 2023. The program will run from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday (with the exception of the week of July 3rd - 7th the program will run Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday due to the holiday on July 4th). Breakfast and lunch will be provided to your child. There is no cost to families.
Elevate Academy will be held at Linganore High School. Bus transportation will be available, pending staff availability. If your child currently walks to New Market Middle School, we will communicate an approved transportation plan closer to the start of the program. It is likely that your child will walk to our school site and receive bus transportation to the host site. All routes will be available using MapNet Web. You will be able to look up bus information with your child's Student ID Number. More information will be shared closer to the program start date for your review. Please complete the registration form and return it to school to secure your child’s spot in the Academy!
If you have any questions please contact Adam Crone by email at adam.crone@fcps.org.
I will be able to answer any questions you may have leading up to the program start date. Once the program begins, Jessica Baker (jessicam.baker@fcps.org) will serve as the Site Coordinator and will be your point of contact.

Summer is a great opportunity for students to practice math! Students have worked hard this school year and we want them to retain what they have learned in order to build upon those skills in the fall.
Two resources provided by the county are the Summer Math Calendar and the Aleks program. Aleks is an online platform that will be available to students until June 15th.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please e-mail our math specialist, Emily Mitchell at Emily.mitchell@fcps.org.

The BUZZ on Energy Drinks
Over the last few years we have seen an increase in the number of energy drinks available in stores: Celsius, Prime Energy, Monster, etc.
While the U.S. has no current information on bans for children and adolescents, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that adolescents do not consume energy drinks, yet in one study it found that 30 – 50% of adolescents reported consuming them.
Many of our students are consuming these drinks daily and we want to make sure that we share information regarding the use of these drinks.
What is in an energy drink?
Many students will use energy drinks to help them increase energy, a study aid, to improve sports performance and to lose weight.
However, there are negative effects to using energy drinks (Sampasa-Kanyinga, et al., 2020)
Dangers include:
Research has shown that energy drinks can be harmful to the adolescent brain as they are still growing.
Middle school children who consume heavily sweetened energy drinks are 66% more likely to be at risk for hyperactivity and inattention symptoms (Greenwood, 2015).
The disruption of sleep, hyperactivity and inattentiveness can have an impact on how students perform in school.
