News from the Office
A huge thank you to all of the chaperones for the 8th Grade Field Trip! I couldn't have pulled it off without your help! The kids all seemed to have a nice time, despite our dreary conditions.
Another huge thank you to all of the parents who chaperoned and donated food for the 8th Grade dance! It was a super successful night, all in thanks to you.
A final thank you to The Derby who donated a large number of pizzas and put their kitchen to the test with a whopping 43 pizzas for the dance! You guys rocked it!

The BUZZ on Energy Drinks
Over the last few years we have seen an increase in the number of energy drinks available in stores: Celsius, Prime Energy, Monster, etc.
While the U.S. has no current information on bans for children and adolescents, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that adolescents do not consume energy drinks, yet in one study it found that 30 – 50% of adolescents reported consuming them.
Many of our students are consuming these drinks daily and we want to make sure that we share information regarding the use of these drinks.
What is in an energy drink?
Many students will use energy drinks to help them increase energy, a study aid, to improve sports performance and to lose weight.
However, there are negative effects to using energy drinks (Sampasa-Kanyinga, et al., 2020)
Dangers include:
Research has shown that energy drinks can be harmful to the adolescent brain as they are still growing.
Middle school children who consume heavily sweetened energy drinks are 66% more likely to be at risk for hyperactivity and inattention symptoms (Greenwood, 2015).
The disruption of sleep, hyperactivity and inattentiveness can have an impact on how students perform in school.
