Earlier this week, we shared that Maryland entered Phase 1B of COVID-19 vaccine distribution. In Phase 1B, all Frederick County Public Schools staff will have the opportunity to get vaccinated. This effort is coordinated between the school system and the Frederick County Health Department. This vast undertaking will continue in the days and weeks ahead.
Phase 1B now includes citizens ages 75 and older. They have been prioritized for vaccine distribution, which remains limited. According to the latest guidance from the Maryland Department of Health, local health departments must set aside vaccine doses each week for public education employees. We are pleased to inform you that FCPS staff will start receiving vaccinations next week as a percentage of vaccines received by the Frederick County Health Department. The amount of vaccines to be received by the FCHD from week-to-week is not known in advance; therefore, we cannot provide a detailed schedule of appointments for our staff at this time. When we receive information regarding the doses allocated and appointment dates and times, we will notify groups and provide details.
We know that many of you are eager to get vaccinated. We wanted to share what we know about this process so far through this Q and A:
Question: Are all employees within FCPS eligible for the vaccination as part of Phase 1B? Answer: Yes. All are eligible, including part-time employees, substitute teachers and coaches. It is important to note that the vaccinations will be planned and distributed in multiple phases based on employee roles. When the opportunity arises for employee groups to schedule vaccinations, they will receive an e-mail from Frederick County Public Schools.
Question: Is the COVID-19 vaccination mandatory for my position? Answer: Currently, it is not mandatory.
Question: I am planning to retire this school year. Am I still eligible for the vaccination? Answer: If you are actively employed by FCPS at the time the vaccination is offered, you are eligible.
Question: Will we know which version of the vaccine we are receiving? Answer: Details about the vaccination will be communicated by the Frederick County Health Department.
Question: I’ve made it this far without contracting COVID. Do I really need to get the vaccine? Answer: You should consult your primary care physician to discuss if the vaccination is right for you.
Question: I have a preexisting condition and believe I should get priority over other employees. How can that happen? Answer: By being classified in Phase 1B, educators are ahead of many others in the community in vaccine prioritization.
