The Importance of Setting Routines
Now that school is underway, it is important to help your child develop an evening routine if he/she does not have one. Routines are beneficial in helping children to establish important habits as well as learn time management skills. Some suggestions for your middle school child are:
In order to start each morning in a calm manner, some things can be done before going to bed. Remind your child to:
When going to bed, remember that kids between 6-13 years of age need 9-11 hours of sleep. Kids 14+ need 8-10 hours of sleep each night. All electronics should be off and charged in the parents’ bedroom to eliminate the temptation of looking at social media.

Enrichment and HAL News
Over the course of multiple ELT sessions, Ms. Shomaker, Advanced Academic Specialist, met with 6th graders identified for HAL (Highly Able Learners) to introduce the students to the program and encourage student agency.
Ms. Shomaker will be offering several enrichment clubs during ELT. All students who are maintaining Cs or better in all classes are invited to participate and encouraged to seize the opportunity to pursue enrichment during ELT. Clubs offered this semester include: Geography Bee, History Bee, STEM, Writer's Block, and Knowledge Masters (Trivia). Students should see Ms. Shomaker to sign up.
OMS Tech Tip
Occasionally a Chromebook may freeze up, or stop working as expected. If that happens on our school Chromebooks, the first thing to try is a hard reset. Simply hold the Refresh key down, press the Power key, then let go of both and wait for the device to restart. The Refresh key is in the top row on the keyboard, and marked with a circular arrow.
If the hard reset doesn't make things right, students should report the problem to a teacher, or take the Chromebook to the OMS Media Center for further assistance.
