Happy May!
I am thrilled to announce OMS will be going 1:1 next year for devices. Each student will have a chromebook, case and charger assigned to him/her. There are many details for distribution that will be coming to you soon. We may be extending our Open House hours to accommodate distribution.
On May 19 we will welcome our incoming 6th grade students. We will have presentations and tours so these students feel comfortable at OMS next year.
I want to thank the students, staff and all the parents for a successful PARCC testing session. We have Algebra PARCC in mid-May.

Students participating in our annual reading challenge must have reading entries submitted by May 26th to receive their medallion at the end of the year convocation. Students can access the form from their ELA Google classroom. Please contact Mrs. Hajjar or your child's ELA teacher if you have any questions.

8th Grade Class Panorama Picture - Thursday, May 18, 1 p.m. Order forms were sent home on May 10. In order to receive a print, students must present an order envelope with payment to the photographer on photo day, or prepay online at vosphoto.com/oakdale.
Recommended attire is semi-formal. Students are advised to “dress up”. Girls are encouraged to wear dresses, skirts or dress pants. Boys are encouraged to wear khakis or dress pants with a collared shirt and tie. Students must be present at school on May 19 in order to attend the dance.
Parents are invited to join in the festivities by donating refreshments, helping with decorations, chaperoning the evening of the dance and/or helping with clean up after the dance. Contact Ms.Shomaker at Karen.Shomaker@fcps.org or (240) 236-5545 to sign up to help.
8th Grade Picnic - Wednesday, May 31, 1:30-3 p.m. The OMS 8th grade class will enjoy a picnic lunch, and be able to sign yearbooks and socialize.
We are asking for parent donations of paper products, plastic utensils, napkins, small water bottles, coleslaw, rolls, butter, potato salad, and desserts. OMS/PTSA will provide fried chicken and other drinks. Parents are encourage to attend, volunteer, and celebrate with the 8th grade.

If you have changed your phone number, address, or emergency contact information, it is imperative that the school be made aware of these changes. Please contact Ms. Harden, OMS registrar, with any updated information at 240-236-5503.
If you have moved, please provide us with proof of residence (gas, electric or water bill) showing your new address as soon as possible. You can fax to 240-236-5519, email to lynn.harden@fcps.org, or send a copy to school with your child.

Term 4 – Ends Friday, June 9th and Report Cards will be mailed out on June 21st.
Obligations: Please have your child return any overdue library books, and pay for any lost or damaged books, before the end of the school year. Students will also need to return school-owned combination locks and text books at the end of the year. If your child has lost any of these items, this is a good time to start looking for them. Please discuss this with your child prior to the end of the school year to ensure they start their summer with a clean slate.
Steven Francisco and Kevin Tu qualified for the finals in the Frederick Optimist Club 31st Annual Youth Talent Competition of the Performing Arts, held on April 8 at GTJHS. Kevin competed in the Strings category, playing the piano, and Steven in the Other Instruments category, playing the drum set.
Congratulations to 8th graders Ava Pierce and Spencer Buckwalter who participated in the Straw Bridge Engineering Challenge at the Baltimore Museum of Industry on April 29th. To compete, students submitted a research paper, completed a panel interview, appeared for static judging of their bridge and a submitted their bridge for a live load test. During the awards ceremony, Ava and Spencer earned the Best Oral Interview superlative, which is a credit to their poise and sound understanding of structural engineering principles they picked up in their Problem Solving class.
On April 8th, 15 students who make up Oakdale Middle School’s Science Olympiad team competed at the Maryland Science Olympiad state finals at Johns Hopkins University. During the competition, students worked in pairs to compete in study, investigative and engineering events. In the end, Oakdale put up a very respectable showing and took home medals and ribbons in nine events, which included: Microbe Mission, Optics, Food Science, Bottle Rockets, Write It Do It, Scrambler, Hovercraft, Ecology and Wright Stuff.
By virtue of their placement in the individual events, OMS SciOly earned a 7th place finish in the highly competitive AA division. Congrats to all members of both competitive teams and the support team for a great season. You are truly Oakdale’s finest!
Eric Bokinsky Career & Technology Education, OMS
Kayla Brightman, Ryan Brightman, Bella Carter, Emma Chang, Jacob Demory, and Evie Gould (the Oakdale MS Owls) won 3rd place in the Show and Tech middle school competition at the Maryland State Destination Imagination Tournament on April 1st at UMBC. They now advance to Global Finals, to be held May 24-27 at the University of Tennessee, a gathering of 8,000 students from over 15 countries.
The team earned a Renaissance Award which is a special recognition for demonstrating outstanding skill in engineering, design or performance. The team created two "keyboard percussion" instruments out of PVC pipe.
