News from Principal Neal Case
Dear Community,
I am delighted to share that the school year is off to an excellent start. Students are finding their classes and engaged in learning each time I visit classrooms. I am expecting great things regarding student achievement this school year and am confident that we will share the success at the end of the school year when I will be able to report progress.
Currently the School Improvement Team (SIT) is working on writing our School Improvement Plan (SIP) which I am hoping to share with you in October. In addition, CMS staff along with our PTA have been working for over a year to write a school mission/vision statement that identifies core beliefs and values that will lead our school. The Mission and Vision will be shared soon on our school web site.
Please note; I am aware that the school website is not up to date. Please be patient as we work to update information.
Please find below some important items related to bus riders and requesting school work.
Parents may also request work when they know in advance the child will be missing school (due to illness, injury, death in the family, vacation, etc.). The parent/guardian should request in writing the dates that the child will be missing school. Upon proper notification, the teacher will gather the work and provide to the student the day prior to the absence. Please remember that the classroom teachers must have a minimum of 24-hour notice for make-up work. This 24-hour period allows teachers the time needed to gather

Attendance
Good attendance leads to success and boosts graduation. Our school goal is 96%.

6th Grade
The 6th grade will go to the Baltimore Science Center on November 13, 2018. This will extend our students' knowledge in the areas of Math and Science. More information will be coming soon. The cost to cover the buses is $10 per student. Chaperones do not need to pay. We will need 47 chaperones. If we do not get enough chaperones, we will have to cancel the trip.
Information From the Science Department:
Ms. Manning's Students:
We are learning all about Ecosystems in preparation for our 2 day Outdoor School field experience at the end of the month. Students are learning about how different patterns of interactions and relationships (predation, competition and symbiosis) between organisms impacts ecosystems. The children watched video footage of symbiotic relationships with particular fascination and disgust at parasitic relationships. We use our Interactive Science Notebooks to record notes and process learning. It is important that ISN’s to be returned to school every day.
Outdoor School: Oct. 29-30(Periods 1,2 & 3) and Oct. 31-Nov. 1 (Periods 4 & 5) We will travel to various rivers and streams in the Potomac River Watershed to conduct water tests and survey various plant and animal populations. Students and chaperones need to dress appropriately and be prepared to be outdoors (old shoes and weather appropriate clothing.)
Ms. DiLeone
Outdoor School is October 25 and 26!!
7th Grade
Mr. Braham:
Students have been studying the rise and fall of Easter Island and reenacting how resources play a role in the advancement of society!
Mr. Abrecht:
Students have been studying the evolution of the atom (how and why our concept of an atom has changed over time) and atomic parts and their characteristics.
8th Grade
Ms. Makusky
All 8th grade students are learning about forces and Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion. So far, we have demonstrated the effects of unbalanced and balanced forces on many different objects, including playing tug-of-war. We have demonstrated inertia in multiple ways - by spinning raw and boiled eggs, pulling tablecloths off of tables, playing Jenga and other cool experiments. This is definitely TRY AT HOME science!
Mrs. Makusky’s classes will be collaborating with Mr. Anzelmo’s classes (former CMS science teacher) in Bogota, Colombia - (yes, in South America)! The students are designing experiments to test and demonstrate the relationship between mass and motion.
Look for more information coming soon about Science Olympiad! CMS will have a Science Olympiad Team this year! Applications will come out in mid-October and the team members will be announced during the beginning of November. See Mrs. Makusky or Mr. Bo for more information.
Learning 4 Life
Our Learning for Life class went to The Great Frederick Fair! We took the city transit bus. Everyone had a fun time seeing many farm animals and eating yummy funnel cake!
