Reinforcement of School Rules:
Important Information Regarding Vaping:
Dear Parents/Guardians: Increasing numbers of students are possessing or using liquid nicotine products. A practice called vaping is occurring in our community and across the nation's schools. FCPS wants to make parents aware of the types of products becoming increasingly available and the health threats they present to your children. We also want to remind everyone that Maryland law prohibits minors (under the age of 18) from purchasing electronic cigarettes, components, or products used to refill or resupply an electronic cigarette. There are multiple instruments that people use to engage in vaping, but one that has been gaining prevalence amongst teens is a product known as JUUL. Students refer to using this product as "JUULing." JUULs are small pods that contain high levels of nicotine: one pod contains the nicotine equivalent to that found in one entire pack of cigarettes. They come in multiple colors, representing different flavors of vapor, and they look almost exactly like USB flash drives or memory sticks that someone would place in a computer. You can read an article about them below, as well as another article describing the health impacts of e-cigarettes: Teenagers Embrace JUUL, Saying It's Discreet Enough To Vape In Class Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes There are many dangers facing our kids these days, and while we cannot always stop them from engaging in some behaviors, we can educate them on the damage these products can cause. FCPS will be taking steps to deliver information to students regarding the dangers of liquid nicotine, and we ask that, after viewing the above-linked articles, you please talk to your children about the inherent dangers to their personal health. There are also penalties for possession of tobacco and electronic nicotine devices addressed in the FCPS discipline code. FCPS asks for your partnership in getting out the clear message that these products need to disappear from our schools as soon as possible. The Surgeon General's office has created a parent tip sheet that includes information and tips for talking with your child: https://e-cigarettes.surgeongeneral.gov/documents/SGR_ECig_ParentTipSheet_508.pdf
HIGH SCHOOL REGISTRATINON NIGHTS
Department News
Math Department News: Students in all math classes are preparing for and/or completing the first benchmark test of the year. This tests helps students and teachers determine the skills that have been retained and those that still need some practice. The work students do in class and at home influences what they retain over time. Please encourage your children to review notes from class, complete TenMarks and other homework assignments, ask questions in class, and ask for tutoring during ELT if they need more help. We want to celebrate their success as they complete these benchmark tests!!
Some 6th grade students have recently taken the IOWA Algebra Aptitude test. This test is given to help measure readiness for algebraic thinking. This test along with many other data points help us to begin thinking about the most appropriate 7th grade math class for next year. It is not a test to prepare or study for and students did a great job with it!!
Science Department: Parents, as you monitor HAC weekly, please initiate contact with us immediately if you have questions about grades or missing assignments. We update HAC regularly so that you can be well-informed with how your children are doing in our classes and want you to contact us ASAP if you have concerns with what you view in HAC. We will get back to you in a timely fashion. If you have not signed up for our Remind.com messages, please check the school website for that information. Reminders about quizzes, classwork, and homework are logged regularly and go straight to your phone. All Remind.com messages are also logged on the school website on the Homework Page by individual teacher.
Sixth grade scientists are finishing the levels of organization of the human body, writing a claim-evidence-reasoning essay, and starting the digestive system.
Seventh grade scientists have finished their Chemistry & Matter Module and have moved on to the next module, The Flow of Energy. We are currently defining energy and discussing the differences between potential and kinetic energy. Special note from Mr. Abrecht: Students finished the Chemistry module by talking about the Law of Conservation of Mass and used balancing chemical equations as the "venue" for that concept. I was extremely impressed with how the vast majority of students tackled the challenge of balancing equations. If you are familiar with that, you know that it is not easy to do. I was so pleased to see them not give up and that they kept plugging away at it. Kudos to them!
Eighth grade scientists are studying space and the relationships between Earth, Moon, Sun. Mrs. Makusky is collecting empty 2 liter soda bottles (rinsed and dried, lids not necessary) and empty shoe boxes. Please send them this way if you have them. Many thanks!
Crestwood Middle staff expects every student to attend school every day. Absences mean that a student misses skills and concepts essential to academic success. Excellent attendance cannot be achieved without cooperation between home and school. Our daily attendance goal is 95%. Students arriving after school starts at 8 AM will need a note and will be required to serve a 10 minute lunch detention that day.
o Fast Food Isn’t Better Food: Many students end up relying on fast food as their primary diet. This isn’t a sustainable way of living. While it may more convenient, ultimately it will impact your health. A little bit here and there is fine, but try not to rely on it for regular meals.
o Avoid Vending Machines: Similar to fast food, vending machines offer the same convenience. However, they rarely contain anything worth consuming. It’s better to stick with your own snacks from home.
o Don’t eat after 8:00 PM: By finishing dinner before 8:00 p.m., you’re giving your body enough time to digest before it hits sleep mode. Making late night eating a regular habit is a sure way to put on the pounds.
