Senior Meetings: Counselors are meeting individually with seniors to assist with the college application process.

Caps & Gowns All seniors wishing to participate in graduation ceremony must have a cap and gown. Ordering information for caps and gowns was sent home with seniors at Wednesday's class meeting. Students must bring the completed order form (line 112 of form). Total cost of cap, gown and tassel is $45.47. Balfour representatives will ONLY be in the cafeteria during all lunch shifts on Thursday, October 10 and Friday, October 12. Any senior needed financial assistance with a cap/gown purchase should contact their counselor and give them their completed order forms prior to Friday, Oct. 11. Additional order forms are located in the Main Office or can be picked up from Mrs. Boyll or Mrs. Anderson.

Enter information as completely as possible. Enter special instructions in the note section, (for example, "Please email transcript to (insert email address)" or "Please include counselor recommendation form"). There will be a $2.00 fee (cash or check payable to MHS) per official transcript prepared, payable when the transcript is picked up. You will be notified when it is ready. Please allow 5 business days for a transcript request.
SCHOOL-SPECIFIC SCHOLARSHIPS
The University of Virginia - Jefferson Scholarship: Students who are applying to the University of Virginia – are you interested in being nominated for the Jefferson Scholars Program? Enrollment in this program provides you a FULL scholarship to the University of Virginia. If you are interested in being nominated as a Jefferson Scholar, please see Ms. Langley in the Counseling Center by Oct. 15.
University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus (UMBC - The Meyerhoff Scholars Program: Awards range from $5,000 - $15,000 per year for in-state students. The program is open to all high-achieving high school seniors who plan to pursue STEM undergraduate degrees. Applicants must have at least a "B" average in College preparatory Math and science course, outstanding SAT scores and a genuine interest in science. For more information, go to https://meyerhoff.umbc.edu/ or see Ms. Langley in Counseling. You must sign up in Counseling by Monday, October 7 to be considered for a nomination.
UPCOMING COLLEGE VISITS
Seniors and juniors should use their Naviance Account (see link above) to sign up for these and other visits and determine the location of the visit. All sign-ups close 24 hours prior to the visit time. Please see Mrs. Bertulaitis in Counseling if you have questions.
FAFSA Finish Events
For senior students and families that were unable to participate in the MHS Financial Aid Info Session on October 3, there are several other FAFSA Finish Events at other locations this fall.
FAFSA Finish Events allow parents to complete the FAFSA with the assistance of financial aid experts. They are hands-on FREE events. Participants in FAFSA Finish Events must register at frederickcountygives.org/FAFSA Finish. Registration begins October 1st.
Participants could receive one of eight $1,000-$2000 scholarships upon completion of a post-event survey.

Werner H. Kirsten Student Intern Program Information Meeting Monday, October 14 Started in 1989, Werner H. Kirsten Student Intern Program (WHK SIP) was designed to expose high school seniors to research and administrative management in a health care environment. Students in the internships (in support of science/research) are assigned projects in areas such as programming, information technology, graphics and media, bioinformatics, security, scientific writing and analytics. There will be an information meeting on Monday, October 14 at 2:30 PM in the Media Center with the Program Coordinator from NCI. We will review the application and interview process. Seniors and Juniors: Rotary Club of Carroll Creek 2019 Fall Leadership Program What Is Youth Leadership? Youth Leadership is a leadership program that targets juniors and seniors from public, private, and local high schools, and will be facilitated by members of the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek. The program will be an intense experience for students interested in exploring the dynamics and day-to-day challenges of contemporary leaders in our community. A faculty drawn from the public, corporate and non-profit community will conduct the sessions. The sessions will include: discussions of leadership principles, skills and behaviors, and group experiences to county/city facilities.
Any Frederick County public or private high school junior or senior may apply. Around 30 students will be selected on a competitive basis. Students should demonstrate an interest in leadership. Seniors Interested in Politics: Apply to be a Page for the Maryland General Assembly
Are you interested in Politics? Would you like to work in the Maryland General Assembly in Annapolis? Are you a Senior and at least 16 years old? Then you should apply to be a Page for the Maryland General Assembly. Pages serve two nonconsecutive weeks working in the Maryland General Assembly during the legislative session in 2020. In order to qualify you must be a senior and at least 16 years old. You must complete an application. Applications can be obtained from Mr. Crompton in room 214. You must also submit a one page typed resume and a one page essay that answers the following question: “What is the most pressing issue facing teenagers today?” All applications, resumes, and essays must be submitted to Mr. Crompton no later than 2:30 pm on Thursday October 10, 2019. The representative from Middletown High School will then present their essay for one of the five spots from Frederick County on October 29, 2019. CTC: Career and Technology Center Shadowing - Open House October 24
The Career and Technology Center is a part of the Frederick County Public School system. CTC programs are available in a variety of areas ranging from the traditional vocational areas to 4-year college preparatory programs. Students can earn college credits and certifications as well as industry certifications and licenses. Programs are taught in half-day blocks and students attend MHS for the other half of the day. CTC is hosting an Open House on Thursday, October 24 from 6 PM to 8 PM.
Shadowing a program is the first step in the process and is open to students in grades 9-11. Students need to see Mrs. Bertulaitis in the Counseling Office to sign up for shadowing, and can do that now. The time frame for shadowing begins Tuesday, November 5 and continues through Thursday, February 27. A student may shadow up to two programs. Once we have an appointment for the student, he/she will be given a permission slip which must be signed and returned to Mrs. Bertulaitis.
Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) provides an opportunity for high school students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer.
The goals of SEAP are to encourage participating high school students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further their education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make them aware of DoN research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN.
SEAP is providing competitive research internships, including a stipend, to 250 high school students this year. (Grades 9 through graduating seniors) Participating students spend eight weeks during the summer doing research at 28 DoN laboratories.

Early College program offered at FCC
FCPS high school students will soon have a unique opportunity to earn a diploma and an associate degree simultaneously through a new partnership with Frederick Community College. The program, called Early College, is intended to increase participation and degree completion of students from populations historically underrepresented in higher education, and is open to all FCPS high school students. Selective Service Registration This is a reminder that all males are required by law to register for the Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Preregistration can be done at 17 years, 3 months and the registration held until the 18th birthday. Failure to register can create future issues: the inability to receive federally funded college loans and grants, to obtain federally funded training and certification programs and federal employment.
