Greetings Middletown Families: The end of the 2018-2019 school year is a day away. Reflecting back on the school year, it seems fitting to thank the many organizations and individuals for all of the work they have done to support Middletown High. Thank you to our volunteers for all the work that you have done to support this year. We also appreciate the work of our PTSA, Music Boosters, Drama Boosters, FFA Alumni, and Sports Club.
Congratulations to Financial Secretary Ms. Denise Staub, American Sign Language teacher Mr. Jim Schartner, and Special Education Instructional Assistant Pamela Thomas who will be retiring at the end of this year. We also extend best wishes and thank you to our Long-Term Substitutes Ms. Rebecca Hamersla, Ms. Christina Randall, and Mr. Zack Welch.
Some Reminders: The last day of school for FCPS high school students is Tuesday, June 18. Only students who need to make up an exam need to attend school Wednesday, June 19 which is a two-hour early dismissal day (7:15 am - 12:15 pm buses will be running but there is no food service). Students needing to make up an exam should make arrangements with their teacher.
Starting Monday, June 25, FCPS schools and offices will operate on a four-day workweek with extended hours Mondays through Thursdays (closed on Fridays). During the week of July 1-5, schools will be open regular hours and will be closed on Independence Day, Thursday, July 4.
A letter will be mailed home with report cards outlining important information including Back-to-School Night, counselor hours, directions for accessing student schedules, etc. Student schedules are not mailed home but will be accessible on through HAC on July 22 .

Reminder: Last Day Of School Tuesday, June 18 As a reminder, Wednesday, June 19 it is an exam make-up day for High School students. Only students that need to make up exams should attend school on June 19. School will dismiss on a 2 hour early dismissal schedule.
Vexillography at MHS Vexillography, the art and practice of designing flags, is alive and well at MHS!! Mr. Mattingly's graphic art students completed a lesson which emphasized simple yet symbolic flag design. Their work was featured in Vexillum, a magazine for map enthusiasts. The two flags, below, were recently designed by Mr. Mattingly's students, Robert Fulton (The Official Flag Of The 301) and Nathan Sandler (The Official Flag Of Switzerland).
Health Room - Medications Pick-Up By Wednesday, June 19 Per Frederick County Health Department, students are not permitted to take their medications home at the end of the school year (FCPS Regulation 400-23). An adult must pick up all medications currently in the health room by the end of the school day on June 19, 2019 no later than 12:30 pm. Medication remaining in the health room will be destroyed on: 06/19/19 at 12:30pm. The appropriate medication/treatment authorization form(s) must be renewed at the beginning of each school year. Rising Seniors: Senior Year Book Photos/Portraits Will Be Taken In The Cafeteria This Summer On The Following Dates: Wednesday, July 3 Monday, July 15 Tuesday, July 16 Thursday, July 18 Lifetouch will be contacting seniors and their families regarding appointment times. If students have questions or need to reschedule, they may call Lifetouch Customer Service at 1-800-445-1189. There will be three makeup/retake dates in the Fall on the following dates: Monday, Sept. 9 Wednesday, Sept. 11 Thursday, Sept. 12 All students are entitled to have their yearbook photo taken regardless of whether they are ordering portraits from Lifetouch. Students should let Lifetouch know IF they are only getting a single photo for yearbook purposes, which does not require a sitting fee. If students are unable to make any of the summer dates or any of the fall makeup/retake dates, they will need to contact Prestige Portraits after all of the scheduled dates and make plans to go to their Baltimore studio to have their photos taken.

2019-2020 Internships Effective Monday, July 1, all Internships will be classified as a weighted class - honors. With this change, we will be reviewing the assignments, and likely adding, additional assignments to make the course more rigorous and in-line with other honors courses. Interns who are assigned to teachers at MHS (and the feeder schools) will be required to teach a minimum of two classes, with lesson plans and class materials submitted to Mrs. Gibson for a grade. Along with the Monthly Time Calendar, and Term Mentor Evaluations, there will be other assignments for the students to complete as well. Reminder: Students Must Clear Out Lockers Prior To Last Day Of School Students are responsible for clearing their lockers of all personal possessions prior to leaving school on their last day of attendance. After students leave on the last day of school, all lockers will be cleaned out and all personal property of students will be held in the cafeteria for one week and then given to a charitable organization.
Free Football Clinic Sunday, June 23 Kids & Pros will be at Frederick High School for a FREE football clinic on Sunday June 23 from 1 PM to 5PM. NFL alumni will teach safe tackling techniques and position fundamentals.This 1-day, non-contact clinic is for athletes ages 7-13. Space is limited and registration is required. 2019-2020 Virtual School Course Registration VOS (Virtual Outside of School) is a blended-learning program designed for students who are independent learners and have consistent access to the Internet and a computer outside of school. Online resources are the primary source of learning, and most courses are taught at the honors level. Students are required to attend a few face-to-face evening sessions for instruction and/or proctoring exams with the course teacher. Sign up EARLY to reserve a seat in the course you want to take because courses fill up quickly! Students register through the school counselor. Who can attend VOS? MHS PTSA 2020 Scholarship Opportunity Rising seniors should mark their calendars for applying to the MHS PTSA scholarship in March 2020. The Maryland PTA organization also has scholarships available each year, $1000 each in the past, though the MD PTA scholarships focus on students anticipating careers in education.
2019-2020 PTSA MHS parents, students and staff are highly encouraged to be a part of this dynamic organization for the school year 2019-2020 with activities starting in August. The PTSA is an invaluable part of the MHS team that provides support to our students, staff and parents through scholarships, school beautification projects, assistance to needy students, staff appreciation events, coordination of volunteers, sponsorship of Frederick County's only baccalaureate program and so much more.
