Dear Middletown High Families:
Tuesday, May 21 will be the last full day of school for our seniors. The graduation committee has been working hard preparing for a wonderful awards ceremony which will be held at MHS on Tuesday, May 28 at 10:00 am, and the graduation program which will be held at Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday, May 29 at 2:00 pm. We are looking forward to the senior awards and graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2019, and are honored to celebrate this important milestone with our seniors and their families.
On Wednesday, May 29, underclassmen may opt for early dismissal at 10:45 am if a completed permission slip is returned to their KnightsQuest teacher, and if transportation arrangements have been made by the parent/guardian. Students leaving at 10:45 am are to exit through the front lobby doors and may be picked up at the front of the school. For students remaining the full day, they will attend a staff supervised study hall following lunch, and will be dismissed at the regular time of 2:15 pm to walk home or ride their regular bus. Early dismissal permission slip : Early Dismissal Permission Form
Today students in grades 9 - 11 received their interim report during KnightsQuest. We also mailed home an interim report to any student who earned a "D" or an "F" in a class. There are (20) days of school remaining until the last day of instruction which is Tuesday, June 18 (only students who missed a final exam need to attend school on Wednesday, June 19). It is important for students to remain focused on the goal of performing well in their classes as grades earned term 4 will determine student eligibility for next school year, and semester 2 final grades will be included on the students' transcript. Students needing support in their classes are encouraged to visit their teachers during KnightsQuest and access tutoring support after school. It can be a struggle to remain focused on academics this time of year, however, I don't think good weather is the real culprit stealing time from important endeavors. I am more convinced than ever after my own journey into digital minimalism, that the thieves robbing us of the time we should be using for things like studying, exercise, and sleep are our devices. If you ask most adults and most students for their opinion about whether more or less time should be spent in front of a screen, the answer is almost always unanimous - less time should be spent in front of a screen. Most of us underestimate the amount of time we spend on our devices and how much less time we are spending on other important activities. By reviewing device analytics, we can learn exactly how much time we are spending on our devices. Armed with that information, we can become more deliberate in how we spend our time by making a plan for screen and non-screen tasks. With twenty days of school remaining, consider encouraging your student to create a plan for screen and non-screen tasks. The results might be surprising.
I found television journalist, Diane Sawyer's feature, "Screen Time" which aired May 4, extremely compelling. Sawyer spent six months traveling the country talking to families, students, and educators about the impact screen time has on their lives. For those interested, here is a link to the program https://abc.go.com/movies-and-specials/screentime-diane-sawyer-reporting As mentioned in the last newsletter, I hope that parents/families will join Ms. Weaver and I in our book study. Our first meeting is May 30 at 5:30 and the book we will be referencing is "Digital Minimalism" by Cal Newport. If you are interested in joining us, please call the main number 240-236-7400 and leave your email address so that we can email you with detailed information about the book study. We look forward to having you join us in our learning journey.
Please don't hesitate to call if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions. Have great week! Sincerely, Lee Jeffrey, Principal

Lunch Account Balances And Refund Requests We are getting close to the end of the school year which means that Seniors need to consider the three options for the remaining money on their lunch accounts. They can use the money by the end of the school year, receive a refund, or transfer funds onto a siblings account at any Frederick County Public School. If a refund is being issued and is less than $25, the student may get the refund at the register. If the amount remaining on the account is higher than $25, a refund slip will have to be filled out and the a check will be sent with the balance of the account to the home of the student. Auto-pay on the My School Bucks website will not be turned off by FCPS until mid-May (in order to keep funds on all lunch accounts for non-graduating students). If a senior is enrolled in auto-pay, the family may want to turn off this feature prior to mid-May.
