Thank You Middletown Science Honors Society! During the months of February and March, MHS students were hard at work, helping Lincoln Elementary students create Science Fair projects. Lea Jih-Vieira, Werner H. Kirsten Intern at the National Cancer Institute and Middletown Science Honors Society (SNHS) Secretary, founded the Lincoln Science Club to help 2nd through 4th grade students create posters to enter into the Frederick County Annual Elementary Science Fair. The Middletown SNHS mentored a group of 26 young scientists and helped them brainstorm hypotheses, conduct experiments, and record conclusions and real-life applications for their posters. In past years, few students from Lincoln Elementary participated in the Annual Elementary Science Fair. This year, 8 students attended and shared their brilliant posters! Thank you to the Middletown SNHS for mentoring the next generation of young scientists! Jane A. Brandt MHS Science Teacher (240) 236-7465
Congratulations Surabhi Bhat, FCPS Science and Engineering Fair Winner! Surabhi Bhat placed 3rd at the FCPS 2019 Science And Engineering Fair. Surabi competed in the Cellular and Molecular Biology Category. She described her work as follows: "I studied the roles of Brachyury interacting proteins in Neuro-Mesodermal Progenitors. Brachyury is a gene necessary for the development of the embryo, and any form of knockout in humans can lead to malignant spinal tumors. I studied the protein-protein interactions between Brachyury and its binding partners to see if a knockout in any of them affects the activity of brachyury."
