Dear Families and Parents,
On December 22, 2018, Governor Hogan renewed an executive order declaring a state of emergency pertaining to the need to control and eliminate the heroin, opioid, and Fentanyl overdose crisis. On January 29, 2019 the Frederick News Post ran an article written by Frederick County Executive Director, Jan H. Gardner titled, "The Heroin and Opioid Challenge." In the article, Ms. Gardner states that in Frederick County, "on average, there is one overdose every day and one fatality every week." She describes the heroin and opioid addiction challenge as one of the most significant challenges in the county, state, and nation.
Staggering statistics about overdoses and loss of life continue to dominate the headlines with no sign of the crisis subsiding. In response to the crisis, state and local juristictions are hosting collaborative efforts to provide the public with information and recovery and prevention resources. In the coming months, a number of parent/community information events are being planned.
In an effort to support the work of our local and state agencies in bringing about awareness and the availability of resources for those needing support, the Middletown High School PTSA in collaboration with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, The Frederick County Health Department, "Heroin's Grip" producer, Conrad Weaver, will be hosting an opioid and heroin parent information night in the MHS auditorium on Tuesday, March 12. The evening will start at 5PM with a viewing of the locally produced film, "Heroin's Grip" followed by special guest presentations.
The Middletown High School PTSA is sponsoring this special event and welcome all students, families, and community members to attend at no charge.
As always please contact us if you have any questions.
