Dear MHS Students and Families,
We have had a few instances of students using E-cigarettes on school property and have been contacted by parents concerning student use of electronic cigarettes in restrooms and in lockerooms. We hope the information below will be useful in your discussions with your child about the negative effects of using E-cigarettes.
E-cigarette devices can resemble traditional tobacco cigarettes, cigars, and pipes, or even everyday items such as pens or USB memory sticks. E-cigarettes heat liquid contained in a "pod" into an aerosol which the user inhales. What is then inhaled into the lungs is a combination of nicotine and other additives such as ultrafine particles, volatile organic compounds, etc. An E-cigarette pod can contain as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes.
Below are some recent statistics about E-cigarette use by US Youth according to a recent article posted on the FDA Webpage:
To read the entire article, "Vaporizers, E-Cigarettes, and other Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS)" go to the FDA webpage at https://www.fda.gov/TobaccoProducts/Labeling/ProductsIngredientsComponents/ucm456610.htm
Frederick County Residents who want to quit can contact the Frederick County Health Department at 301-600-1755 to register for FREE smoking cessation services. Registered participants may be eligible to receive free NRT products. National Day of Unplugging Friday, March 1 We increasingly miss out on the important moments of our lives as we pass the hours with our noses buried in our devices. On March 1, MHS will participate in National Day of Unplugging, a 24-hour-respite from digital devices, especially our cell phones. We encourage students and staff to take the challenge of putting away devices to be present in the moment.
