Awards Ceremony
A big thank you to the MHS PTSA for underwriting the annual MHS Awards ceremony. Through the PTSA’s charitable work, we were able to provide refreshments and over 400 pins and letters to students for their academic performance and service hours. Many thanks to the students that helped make our 2018 Academic Awards Assembly a success!

MHS Science National Honor Society
STEM: On Thursday, October 18, students from the MHS Science National Honor Society volunteered at Lincoln Elementary School by offering several STEM-related activities to demonstrate the science concepts used by the “Science Guys from Baltimore”. Our students worked with NCI scientists and the “Science Guys from Baltimore” to offer activities, such as Bacteria under the Microscope, Milk Magic, Polymer Worms and much more, to the Lincoln ES students. A great experience was had by all.
Winter Sports Registration: Winter sports begin on Thursday, November 15.

School Photos: Make-up photo day for those who missed the first photo day or want to have their photos retaken will be on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Students who wish to have their photos retaken must bring their original photos with them on Oct. 30. NCI Werner H Kirsten Student Intern Program: Students - Are you Interested in Science, Statistics, journalism or computer graphics? There are opportunities available for you at NIH / Ft. Detrick through the 2019-2020 NCI Werner H Kirsten Student Intern Program. Applications are now being accepted. Student Member of the Board Election: It is time for interested sophomores and juniors to apply for the position of Student Member of the Board of Education. The completed student packet is due by 4 pm on November 2. For full details go to: https://www.fcps.org/boe/student-board-member-election Preview New School-Accountability Measures Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) invites the public to learn about new Maryland school-accountability measures at any of four regional meetings. The one-hour meetings will give the community opportunities to find out about Maryland’s new state-issued star ratings for schools, to preview the new format of state-issued school report cards and to learn about new school-accountability standards.
Meetings are from 7-8 p.m. as follows: Monday, October 29 at Frederick High, Thursday, November 1 at Catoctin High, Monday, November 12 at Brunswick High, and Monday, November 19 at Middletown High.
“Together We’re Better" The Arc Maryland, in partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education, Maryland Department of Disabilities, and the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council, is pleased to announce its 2018-2019 “Together We’re Better” Inclusive Education Awareness Campaign and Artwork Contest in celebration and honor of National Inclusive Schools week (December 3 – 7). Free Flu Vaccination for Children: The Frederick County Health Department (FCHD) will host three free flu vaccination clinics for children ages 6 months to 17 years. Both the injectable (the shot) and intranasal FluMist® vaccines will be available. The free vaccine is provided by the Maryland Department of Health. (1) Reflections Program, which is a Fine Arts competition (film, music, literature, photography, art); entries due November 27 school front office; check our website for more information.
(2) Teacher appreciation breakfast/brunch in honor of National Parental Involvement Day November 15 during National Teacher Education Week; details to be provided soon with sign-ups for food and beverage donations.
Support your MHS PTSA by becoming a member or contributing to the Write-A-Check fund. Both of these provide the financial wherewithal for the PTSA to organize and implement a wide range of activities in support of the MHS experience for the students. Additionally, volunteers are always welcome to help at individual events.

Reminders: Interpreter Services: If you require interpreting services for any school event, please contact the counselor's office and provide at least one-week advance notice. MHS Teacher Tutoring Services:
Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program: The application period for the 2019 high school level Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program runs until October 31. The program provides students with the opportunity to participate in research at a Department of Navy lab during the summer. It is open to high school students 16 years and older. The program pays $3,300 for new students for the 8-week summer internship. More information and details about eligibility can be found at http://seap.asee.org/ CTC Shadowing: Students who are interested in shadowing at CTC for possible attendance in the 2019-20 school year should see Mrs. Bertulaitis in Counseling.
