Let’s U-KNIGHT on Unity Day! October is National Bully Prevention Month. Wednesday, October 24th we will celebrate Unity Day and U-KNIGHT in kindness, empathy, acceptance, and inclusion. Our Unity Day activities include:
Wear orange, a color commonly associated with safety, visibility, and warmth.
During Knight’s Quest, the Students Voices club is hosting a Unity Day assembly where student performers and speakers will spread messages of kindness, empathy, acceptance, and inclusion. Students interested in attending should sign up with Ms. Weaver in the media center.
During lunch, students will have a chance to add their name Six Degrees of Separation poster, a way to show the chain of friends and how we are six or fewer steps away from our connections.
Great American Shakeout: On Thursday, October 18 at 10:18AM MHS participated in the Great American Shakeout. This is an annual event in which people across the county review and practice earthquake safety. During an earthquake, staff would present the command “Drop, Cover, and Hold!” This includes dropping to the floor, making yourself as small as possible, and protecting your head, neck, and chest by taking cover under a sturdy desk or table, or near an interior wall. Then, covering your head with your hands and arms. At the conclusion of the earthquake, staff and students would evaluate safety and evacuate the building. FCPS Marching Band Festival: On Monday, October 22 at 6 pm, Middletown High will host the 2018 FCPS Marching Band Festival. All 10 Frederick County high schools and the Shepherd University Ram Band will participate! Come see this showcase of our talented local marching bands. Gates open at 5 pm. Admission: $5 Adults; $3 Students; Free for children 5 and under, senior citizens and FCPS employees.
PLEASE NOTE: All of the parking lots in Middletown Park except the small lot closest to Coblentz Road will be closed at 4:00 pm to provide parking for the participating bands. There will be no access through the park past that lower lot except for band vehicles.
Winter Sports Registration: Winter sports begin Thursday, November 15.
All physicals must be dated April 1 or after and must be completed prior to Thursday, November 15. Click here for the physical form.

Once each athletic team is chosen and the roster is finalized, parents will receive an email to let them know when they may go online and pay the participation fee. The fee is $90 plus a $4 administration fee, totaling $94. The $4 administrative fee applies to both online and cash/check athletic participation fee payments. Note to parents: You will not be able to pay online until your son or daughter is selected for the team and the roster has been finalized. School Photos: Make-up photo day for those who missed the first photo day or want to have their photos retaken will be on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Students who wish to have their photos retaken must bring their original photos with them on Oct. 30. NCI Werner H Kirsten Student Intern Program: Students - Are you Interested in Science, Statistics, journalism or computer graphics? There will be an information meeting at Middletown High School on Wednesday, October 24th from 2:30 to 3:30 in the Media Center. The Program coordinator from Ft. Detrick will be here to present the information and answer questions.
There are opportunities available for you at NIH / Ft. Detrick through the 2019-2020 NCI Werner H Kirsten Student Intern Program. Applications are now being accepted. Please note that due to a recent change in the NIH Policy regarding minors, 16 year olds will no longer be eligible for the WHK SIP or any NIH Summer Internship Program. Applicants for the WHK SIP must be 17 prior to the start of the program on June 24, 2019. The other change should not affect the majority of applicants but students must now reside within 40 miles of their internship location. Any student in Frederick County is automatically eligible. Certain schools on the outskirts of the county will also remain eligible. If there are any questions please feel free to get in touch to discuss. Student Member of the Board Election: It is time for interested sophomores and juniors to apply for the position of Student Member of the Board of Education. The completed student packet is due by 4 pm on November 2. Video Contest: American Bankers Association Foundation is holding a video contest called Lights, Camera, Save! First United Bank and Trust has partnered with the foundation to spread the word and give our local students a chance at the prizes! Submit your video and the completed entry form by December 3. Preview New School-Accountability Measures Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) invites the public to learn about new Maryland school-accountability measures at any of four regional meetings. The one-hour meetings will give the community opportunities to find out about Maryland’s new state-issued star ratings for schools, to preview the new format of state-issued school report cards and to learn about new school-accountability standards.
Meetings are from 7-8 p.m. as follows: Monday, October 29 at Frederick High, Thursday, November 1 at Catoctin High, Monday, November 12 at Brunswick High, and Monday, November 19 at Middletown High.
“Together We’re Better" The Arc Maryland, in partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education, Maryland Department of Disabilities, and the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council, is pleased to announce its 2018-2019 “Together We’re Better” Inclusive Education Awareness Campaign and Artwork Contest in celebration and honor of National Inclusive Schools week (December 3 – 7). Free Flu Vaccination for Children: The Frederick County Health Department (FCHD) will host three free flu vaccination clinics for children ages 6 months to 17 years. Both the injectable (the shot) and intranasal FluMist® vaccines will be available. The free vaccine is provided by the Maryland Department of Health. Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program: The application period for the 2019 high school level Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program runs until October 31. The program provides students with the opportunity to participate in research at a Department of Navy lab during the summer. It is open to high school students 16 years and older. The program pays $3,300 for new students for the 8-week summer internship.
