Screen Time
In a January 2018 Washington Post article, “Teens who spend less time in front of screens are happier — up to a point, new research shows,” contributor Tara Bahrampour explores a number of studies that look at the emotional effects of screen time on teens. According to the report, "Decreases in Psychological Well-Being Among American Adolescents After 2012 and Links to Screen Time During the Rise of Smartphone Technology," extended screen time (as much as 20 hours a week) caused an increase in depression and anxiety. At the same time, no screen time also had adverse effects, as teens felt left out of the social happenings and connectedness to their friends. According to the studies, a little bit of screen time is not a bad thing; in fact, teens who had a small amount of screen time (between one and five hours a week), were happier than both extremes on the screen time spectrum.
While some screen time can be appropriate, it is essential that teens engage in a variety of non-screen activities. Bahrampour found that “the happiest teens," are those who are "above average in face-to-face social interaction time and below average in social media use.” The recommendation is that parents help teens find a healthy balance between using their phones and engaging in non-screen activities.
