Welcome from the MHS Knights Staff!
Dear Middletown Families: We are excited to welcome our students to the 2017-2018 school year tomorrow! Middletown High School strives to offer quality instruction in a safe and supportive school environment. The MHS staff is committed to our school's vision, “To provide an excellent learning environment that enables our students to achieve success and to become contributing members of society.” and the MHS motto, "Ready-Respectful-Relentless."
We are continuing our efforts to provide families with timely and accurate school to home communication. In this edition of the weekly newsletter, you will find information about lockers, parking permits, news from the counseling office, a link to the student handbook, etc.
Tomorrow each student will be given a large envelope containing a great deal of information pertaining to the school year including the FCPS Calendar Handbook, Free and Reduced Meal Forms, insurance forms, PTSA Membership form, etc. Some students will also receive PARCC and other test score reports from last spring. One very important document that will be in the envelope is a current contact information sheet. Parents/Guardians need to check, correct, and return the document with your student as soon as possible so that we can update the information. We will be continuing our efforts to partner with parents. We always appreciate feedback and parent/family involvement at our school. If you are looking for ways to get involved, consider joining the MHS PTSA, the MHS Sports Club, etc. And, if you would like to volunteer, be sure to contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Vicki Grossnickle at (vicki.grossnickle@fcps.org).
For questions and concerns, call 240-236-7400 or email me at lee.jeffrey@fcps.org. Let's make it a great school year! Lee Jeffrey Principal

Students may still sign up for lockers by filling out this form but those locker assignments will not be ready on the first day of school. Please see Ms. Dillard in the Counseling office if you have any locker questions or problems. For Information on Free/Reduced-Price Meals, go to: http://www.fcps.org/food-services/free-and-reduced-price-meals Summer facility projects: Many projects were completed over the summer to improve our school. New carpet was installed in the Band and Chorus room, had some lockers removed, hallways painted and bulletin boards made. The MHS administration appreciates the support it received from the FCPS Facilities department! Parking Permits: Students may pick up parking permit applications in the Media Center or print the application from the MHS website at: http://education.fcps.org/mhs/parkingpermit The deadline for initial applications is Friday, August 26. All vehicles parked on school property who do not display a permit will be ticketed beginning on August 28. Students should bring completed applications and required documents to the Media Center to purchase permits. Students can see someone in the main office if they have any questions. Please review the updated FCPS Regulation 400-73: Responsible Use of Digital Technology at https://apps.fcps.org/legal/doc.php?number=400-76
Dress Code Committee: A dress code committee is being formed to determine if the MHS dress code is still applicable or needs to be updated. The group will look at the FCPS dress code policy and the policies of other high schools. Along with determining the appropriateness of dress code the committee will determine consequences for violating the dress code. If you are interested in this committee that will meet after school please send an email to Mr. Rumpf at Danny.Rumpf@fcps.org by September 15th. A big THANK YOU to our PTSA and parent volunteers for providing a wonderful lunch on the first day back for teachers! The Middletown High School PTSA will be having its first general membership meeting on Wednesday, 20 September at 7:00pm in the MHS Heritage Room. The PTSA is an invaluable part of the MHS team that provides support to our students, staff and parents through scholarships, school beautification projects, assistance to needy students, staff appreciation events, coordination of volunteers, sponsorship of Frederick County's only baccalaureate program and so much more. MHS parents, students and staff are highly encouraged to be a part of this dynamic organization. All are welcome! For more information, contact Shylonda Minter at shylondam@gmail.com. The administration would also like to thank student volunteers Madison and Bernie for their help in the front office as well as the MHS summer office staff and custodial staff who did an outstanding job of getting the school prepared for a new school year! MHS is looking for volunteers to help in the Copy Room! We need volunteers to make copies of instructional material for the teachers as well as manage the distribution of teacher-printed material. Your help in this area matters greatly to the teachers. Helping with this administrative task frees our teachers so they can spend more working with your students. If you can spare a morning or afternoon or just an hour or two, just one day a week, please email Diane Cosgray diane.cosgray@fcps.org. No experience necessary. Thank you for considering this volunteer opportunity!
Schedule Changes: Students can request a schedule change in the first five days of the school year by submitting a completed “Schedule Change Request Form,” signed by a parent. These forms are green half sheets available on the wall just inside the door of the counseling center. Students should not leave class to ask for a change or a form. Forms should be picked up before or after school, during lunch, or between classes. Once submitted, the form will be processed by the counselor and the outcome shared with the student. After the first week of school, no changes can be made. Schedule changes are not guaranteed because the changes are dependent on the individual student’s overall program and the availability of desired courses. Colleges visiting MHS: Students should access Naviance Family Connection to see the latest list of colleges who will be visiting MHS. Students can log in at: http://connection.naviance.com/middleths
