MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL QUESADA
Dear MHS Families, It is hard to believe, but the school year is now one quarter complete, as today marks the end of term 1. Teachers have until Wednesday, November 11 to finalize term grades. We will also mail home report cards once they are printed and finalized. As always, please spend a few minutes with your children reviewing grades in Schoology. Here is a video to show you how to check grades in Schoology If you have questions about specific grades or assignments, please email or message your teacher through Schoology.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. They placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2021 competition by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The spokesperson for NMSC commented that “those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success. These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational excellence opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

he MHS Virtual Spirit Week was a success! Thanks to all the students and staff participated in the virtual spirit days! Also a HUGE thank you to all who donated to the Non-Perishable Food and Personal Care Drive! Your generosity is much appreciated! All donations were taken to the Middletown Valley Food Bank.

It's Academic Tournament On Saturday October 31, three members of the It's Academic team competed in a regional tournament. Congratulations to Luke Yeatman, Ananth Nair and Christian West who won the competition defeating teams from Liberty and Francis Scott Key and will be moving on in the playoffs. A broadcast of Saturday's match will air on WJZ at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 19.
November Wellness Initiative: Great American Smokeout Thursday, November 19 The American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout is an annual event that encourages and offers support to smokers to make a plan to quit smoking or to quit smoking on the day of the event. Every year the Great American Smokeout draws attention to preventing deaths and chronic illnesses caused by smoking. Though smoking rates have dropped, almost 38 million Americans still smoke tobacco, and about half of all smokers will encounter smoking related deaths. Each year, more than 480,000 people in the United States die from a smoking related illness, meaning smoking causes 1 out of 5 deaths in the US alone. For more information: Great American Smokeout
FCC Virtual Monroe Center Workforce Careers Open House Wednesday, November 18 at 6 PM FCC will host a Virtual Monroe Center Workforce Careers Open House on Wednesday, November 18 at 6 PM. Join the session to learn all about the flexible and affordable career training programs at the Monroe Center. Meet staff members, review upcoming course options, and discover tuition assistance and scholarship opportunities. FCC Admissions and Career Services staff will be available to answer any questions. The Carson Scholar Fund Applications Due Monday, November 16 MHS is seeking to nominate one student (9th, 10th, or 11th grader) to the 2021 Carson Scholars Fund. The nominated student will compete for up to $1,000 college scholarship. Applicants must have a weighted GPA of at least 3.75 from term 1 and also demonstrate dedication to community service. Interested students are to write a short essay (1-2 paragraphs), sharing community service experiences, and submit to Ms. Phelps (erin.phelps@fcps.org) no later than Monday, November 16.

The US Senate Youth Program Applications Attention Student Leaders: The US Senate Youth Program (USSYP) is accepting applications from qualified junior and senior leaders. Students will be selected for a week-long government and leadership online education program and receive a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science. The National Honor Society for Dance Arts The NHSDA is designed to recognize outstanding artistic merit, leadership and academic achievement in students studying dance in the public or private sector. National Spanish Honor Society Application Due Monday, November 16 Juniors and Seniors interested in joining the National Spanish Honor Society are invited to apply. MHS 2020 FFA Citrus Sale It is that time of year again! Citrus orders for MHS FFA are available. All citrus is grown through the Florida Farm Bureau and the apples are local from Catoctin Mountain Orchard. We also have pears, pineapples, nuts and juice for sale. You can also donate citrus to the food bank or soup kitchen.

Frederick County Health Department Free Flu Vaccine Friday, November 13 at Thurmont Municipal Building The Frederick County Health Department (FCHD) offers a FREE (injection "shot" only) flu vaccine clinic for children 6 months to 18 years of age.
Middletown Valley People Helping People (MVPHP) Holiday Adopt A Family Program Last year, through community generosity, MVPHP's Holiday Adopt A Family Program helped over 200 local children by providing toys, clothing, boots, shoes and gift cards. FAFSA Assistance: Virtual Appointments A number of community partners are bringing Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Finish Virtual Events to the community this fall to provide students and parents with assistance in completing the FAFSA. These virtual appointments are also available to assist families in completing the Maryland State Financial Aid Application (MSFAA), which allows qualified children of undocumented immigrants who qualify for in-state tuition under §15-106.8 of the MD Education Article to apply and be considered for certain types of state need-based financial aid.
During these virtual appointments, a financial aid expert will work with students and parents in completing these applications and will be available to answer any questions. FAFSA and MSFAA applications must be completed by Monday, March 1, 2021 for a student to be considered for state-based financial aid.
