Become A Member! Please remember to support your MHS PTSA by becoming a member or contributing to the Write-A-Check fund. Becoming a member doesn't commit you to volunteer, but it gives you a vote and a voice in advocating for improvements for our school and Frederick County teachers! Both the membership and the Write-a-Check fundraiser provide the financial wherewithal for the PTSA to organize and implement a wide range of activities in support of the MHS experience for the students. In addition, volunteers are always welcome to help at individual events. As a friendly reminder, Seniors who wish to apply for the $500 PTSA scholarship in the Spring must be members as well. 2019-2020 PTSA Membership
Reflections Program MHS has not been able to participate in this wonderful event for the performing arts for the last several years because we did not have a volunteer to chair the committee. Thanks to Jeff Downing for volunteering to do so this year! Reflections is a wonderful opportunity for students to be able to have fun creating and showcasing their talents in the arts! There are opportunities to submit in six categories, including dance, literature, and photography. Look for more detailed information soon but get those creative juices flowing!
Baccalaureate The PTSA is looking for parents of juniors and seniors to help with the 2020 Senior Baccalaureate to be scheduled in May 2020. This time-honored tradition is a student-led community program for MHS seniors to celebrate their upcoming graduation by hearing inspirational speakers, enjoying the talents of fellow seniors, and reflecting on their life journey to graduation. We are the only school in the county that hosts a Baccalaureate. It is always well-received by parents and students alike, and although this is a ceremony for seniors, interested parents of juniors are encouraged to assist in order to gain experience and insight for their future senior's baccalaureate. An informational meeting will be forthcoming next month. If you are interested in helping the PTSA and MHS seniors plan this year’s Baccalaureate, please email the PTSA Baccalaureate committee: mhsptsbacc@gmail.com
Advocacy: Fund our Schools - Support Maryland Blueprint! Maryland Blueprint is focused on securing additional funds for our Maryland schools. It is quoted that Maryland public school funding is short by over $2.9 billion each year, equating to an average of $2 million shortage per school. Sample areas of focus include: supporting salary increases for teachers, revising the outdated formula used to provide funding for schools, and improving technology and services for those disadvantaged in the community and/or school. Per the Maryland PTA, which charters MHS PTSA:
The stakes are high when it comes to making sure we fully fund our schools. That’s why we are part of a coalition putting on community forums across the state focused exclusively on turning the Kirwan recommendations and new funding formula into a reality. This is a massive opportunity for our state, and it will be debated in the upcoming Maryland General Assembly session. We cannot afford to sit on the sidelines, we must make our voices heard now.
Your voice is needed for this critical conversation, and we hope that you will consider attending a community forum. See schedule and RSVP here: Marylandblueprint.org.
PTSA Meeting Please join us for our next meeting on Monday, Nov 18 6:30 PM in the Heritage Room.
