News from Principal Shirley Olsen
*New Dismissal Procedures beginning April 23, 2019*
For parents
Why?
There have been numerous unsafe actions occurring at car rider dismissal that has prompted this change in procedure. Our duty is to the safety and security of children while they are in our care.
What?
Car riders will no longer be dismissed from the front of the building. Instead they will be dismissed from 3 classrooms in order to ensure safety and create a secure area. These students will only be released to parents who are in the car rider line. The car rider dismissal procedure will remain the same. The main change is that students will now come out of classrooms when called on the walkie talkie.
How?
Because of this change, we are requiring that students be designated by their parents as a bus rider, car rider or walker. There will not be a park and walk up option any longer. If a parent was a “walk up” parent, we are asking them to designate their child as a walker and meet their student at the end of our property, either by the pond or by the bus loop. If this is not acceptable to them, they may get in the car rider line and pick up as a car rider. If students are designated as walkers, it is important to note that parents are responsible for their safety once they leave school grounds.
A few additional measures/details....
The playground gates that are open now during dismissal will remain closed
Cones will block the far side of the parking lot to prevent cars from coming in to park and walk up
Parents are still not allowed to park on Hannover Drive between the bus entrance to the car rider entrance, per posted regulation/legal signs

5th Grade Celebration
5th Grade Celebration-New Date-June 18th
If you have a 5th grade student, we hold an event at the end of the year that includes a program where students are celebrated in a ceremony as they end their elementary school journey. Parents/volunteers then provide the students with lunch, before students in their classes participate in fun activities or rotations. This year there will be kickball, water games, a DJ and additional snacks and beverages.
There are many parents who have donated funds and are willing to volunteer to help serve the food, run stations and even help with the clean up at the end of the day. We need approximately 30 volunteers to serve food and run stations for the event-June 18th. If you are able to help, please see the link below for Mr. Hill.
A part of the program will be a slide show with each child's current school picture; a tradition is to include a baby or toddler picture of each student. Please don't forget to send in your child's baby picture. A planning group meets each month and needs your help. Our next meeting is Monday, May 13th at 6 pm at OGES. Please join us.
Also, students need to bring in a t shirt for tye-dying for the 5th grade celebration. Please use this link for more information. T Shirts for 5th Grade Celebration
If you are willing to donate or help with the event and cannot attend the monthly meetings please call Mr. Rashene Hill at 240-447-2955 or http://mirmaitamshene@gmail.com. We will soon be putting out a sign up genius for parents to sign up as volunteers after the morning's program on June 18th.

Kindness ROCKS!
Congratulations again to our classes that had the most kindness “rocks” for display in the hallway! Each and every class along with their acts of kindness on “rocks” in the hallway show what great Heart Power we have. Right now we are up to 1,705 rocks in the hallway, that is 1,700 acts of kindness!!! Mrs. Miller’s 3rd grade, Mrs Ragle’s and Mrs Ramarge’s 1st grade classes took some time to celebrate their kindness and made their kindness rocks. We were able to have a much needed and well deserved break to be creative and continue to spread kindness to our community.
Keep the kindness going!! Which classes will be our winners for the month of April???
