Mistakes and Grace!
Hey Dolphin families and happy Friday! I hope everyone had a happy week of school and I'm wishing everyone a happy and healthy end to the school year!
At Orchard Grove, we celebrate kindness ... a lot. One of the things I'm looking forward to doing this weekend is looking through all of the kindness shout outs that students earned this last week and celebrating that on the Monday morning announcements. I'm so proud of all of the ways that students are working to demonstrate kindness to each other.
One of the ways we help kids know to be kind to each other is by showing Grace. Grace is when you apologize when you make a mistake, or when you accept the apology of someone else when they make a mistake. The thing about mistakes is that they happen all the time. Good people make mistakes too and it's one of the things we talk about at our Heart Brain Body Power assemblies every quarter.
Let's focus on the kind of grace someone might show towards a person who made a mistake. That kind of grace is important because it's easy (and often reasonable) to be angry when someone makes a mistake, and everyone is entitled to feel how they feel. However, it's also important to demonstrate grace to the person who made a mistake and forgive them, accept their apology, be cool ... because the next time it might be YOU who makes that mistake and you're going to want others to forgive you, accept your apology, be cool with you.
As you are talking with your kids about their days at school, one great conversation to have with them is to help them understand what it looks like to demonstrate grace to a classmate. Demonstrating grace doesn't mean letting someone treat you in an unkind way. It means recognizing that we all make mistakes. The key question is, how do you want other people to treat you when YOU make a mistake? The answer to that question is almost certainly going to describe how it's important for kids to treat someone else when THEY make a mistake. Forgiveness is free, so let's throw that around like confetti!
Thank you, and I hope everyone has a happy and healthy weekend! Please stay safe and healthy!
