Sportsmanship!
Hey Dolphin families and happy Friday! I hope everyone had a happy week of school and I'm wishing everyone a happy and healthy weekend!
At Orchard Grove, we talk about kindness ... a lot. Like, A LOT!!!! We award kindness shout outs to students when they demonstrate greetings, gratitude, grace, politeness, congratulations, compliments, and citizenship. In fact, I have a very full basket of kindness shout outs outside my office right now that I can't wait to go through and pull winners from. One of my favorite parts of every week is seeing all of the ways students demonstrated kindness to each other and to the Dolphin educators that support them.
One word that we might add to the shout out for next year is Sportsmanship. That's a very specific kind of kindness that's like Grace, Compliments, and Citizenship applied at the same time in a competitive situation. We know that many kids participate in sports outside of school, and many students play competitive games at recess and at PE. Unfortunately, while being competitive is ok (I'm just a little bit of that myself!), and trying to win a game is natural, competitiveness can quickly become anger which can then become unkind words and actions.
Let's work together to encourage good habits of sportsmanship when kids engage in competitive activities. One great way to be kind and demonstrate sportsmanship is to congratulate your opponent whether you win or lose. Another way to demonstrate kindness, by being a good citizen of the game, is to follow all of the rules, take turns, and honor what a referee might have called, even if you disagree. And finally, demonstrating grace might look like recognizing that someone may not be as good at a certain game, but they are working hard and doing their best. Encouraging that person is a great way to demonstrate Sportsmanship.
Sometimes, kids are going to be around other kids (and sometimes adults) that don't demonstrate Sportsmanship themselves. Demonstrating kindness in the form of Sportsmanship is one way that a Dolphin student can be a leader by showing others what kindness looks like, even when you're trying your hardest to win!
Thank you, and I hope everyone has a happy and healthy weekend! Please stay safe and healthy!
