Kids are Watching!
Hey Dolphin families and happy Friday! I hope everyone had a happy week of school and I'm wishing everyone a happy and healthy weekend!
One of the things we know about kids as that they watch people around them, and they are often watching and listening even when it doesn't look like they are. I have very specific memories of my now-14 year old (when she was much younger) asking questions about an adult conversation she overheard and attended to ... and we didn't even realize she was listening!!! I bet the parents reading this newsletter have similar stories to tell about a surprise question their young child asked about something they saw or heard, even when it didn't seem like they were watching or hearing.
Kids take cues from the environment around them, and because they're kids, their brains are built to take and internalize these cues and make them a part of who they are. On the one hand, this is great news because it means that as adults, we have enormous influence on how kids act just by being who we are around them. But there is a responsibility and a caution in that as well. We have to be very thoughtful about not just how we talk to kids, but how we talk around kids. One of the things we tell students at school is that good people do the right thing ... even when no one is watching, but the follow up to that statement is, someone is almost always watching! With kids, they are always watching.
As you think about this influence, please look for opportunities to change a neutral response to a child, to an overtly kind response. For example, if they ask, can I have a snack, a neutral response is, yes. An overtly kind response might be, yes, and thank you for asking in such a respectful way. Being overtly kind to and around kids will not produce big changes overnight. Kids' brains aren't constructed to change overnight. But over the long term, modeling kindness, even when it doesn't seem like kids are listening, can build habits of positivity and empathy and compassion as kids transition to adulthood. And remember, kids are almost always watching!
Thank you, I hope everyone has a happy and healthy weekend! Please stay safe and healthy!
