School News
Term three report cards will be distributed during first block on Tuesday, April 4.
Students who are not in the building during first block, will pick up their report cards from their second block teacher. Students who only attend classes at UHS in the afternoon, will pick up their report cards from their third block teachers.
CTC morning students may pick up their report cards directly from guidance on Tuesday, April 4, when they return from CTC.
Report cards will be mailed home to any student who does not attend in-person classes at UHS.
Please follow the steps below if you are planning on taking either a High School Based (at UHS) or Open Campus (online or at the FCC Campus) Dual Enrollment class at FCC during the 2023-2024 school year. Please complete the steps IN ORDER:
FIRST, APPLY TO FCC at https://apply.frederick.edu/begin, as soon as possible. Be sure to use a PERSONAL EMAIL ADDRESS in your application. You will receive your FCC ID number by email within 2-3 business days. (If you already have a FCC ID number, it is NOT necessary to apply again.)
Once you have received your FCC ID number, ANYONE who plans to take a 2023–2024 DUAL ENROLLMENT CLASS AT FCC MUST COMPLETE THE DUAL ENROLLMENT PARTICIPATION FORM https://frederick.edu/credit-admissions/downloads/de/departicipationform.aspx. Hard copies of this form are also available in the Counseling Office. The Dual Enrollment Participation Form must be completed, printed and submitted to Mrs. Fisher in the AP Office for approval. This form MUST be submitted before Wednesday, May 10. Students who do not submit their Dual Enrollment Participation Form by that date risk losing their seat in a High School Based FCC course during the 2023-2024 school year.
Students who plan to take Open Campus classes can wait to submit the Participation Form until they have registered for Fall Semester.

Urbana High School’s literary magazine “The Quill” is back for its second publication! If you would like to submit an original work to the magazine, please fill out "The Quill" Submission Form. You will receive your own "PDF" of the publication via emaiI by May. Don’t know what to write about? Let your imagination guide you! Come up with your own theme and style (poem, essay, etc.) Also, if you submit a writing piece, you will be placed in a gift card raffle! The final day of submission is Friday, April 14.

PLASTIC FILM RECYCLING - TREX COMPETITION - NOW THROUGH APRIL 15 - BRING US YOUR BAGS!
Did you know you can recycle your grocery bags? Do you have that "bag" of bags at your house? Our students are competing against students from Oakdale High School to see which school can collect and recycle the most plastic bags and other plastic film! Our recycling will support a Regional TREX competition. The plastics are gathered and used to make TREX Decking. If the plastic is stretchy, we can recycle it! Check out this link of background information and suggested plastic items. The competition will run for six weeks and will end on Saturday, April 15. The winner will be announced on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22!

CRYPTOHAWKS
Over the past two weekends, The Urbana Robotics Team, aka the CryptoHawks, ranked second in their district competition in 72 matches against 35 other teams. Ultimately, the team finished as the 7th seed for the playoffs which will be held on Sunday, April 2.
The Cryptohawks won the “Sustainability Award” which "celebrates and recognizes a team which has developed a sustainable program in order to define, manage, and achieve the team's ongoing objectives." Nick Valerio and Aidan Shranatan were named as Dean's List Semi-Finalists for 10th/11th grade students which "recognizes the leadership and dedication of the most outstanding secondary school students." Because of the team's stellar performance, the Cryptohawks have also qualified for the District Championship to be held at Eagle Bank Arena at George Mason University from Thursday, April 6 - Saturday, April 8. Congratulations, Cryptohawks!
UHS offers PEER TUTORING ON WEDNESDAYS FROM 2:20-3:30 PM IN THE MEDIA CENTER! Drop-in students are welcome, but all students are encouraged to sign up in advance, to ensure there is a tutor available and ready to help with your topic. UHS PTSA SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 5!
It's not too late to apply for the UHS PTSA Scholarship, so hurry!
The Urbana High School PTSA is proud to award up to three scholarships based on essay submissions for any UHS graduating senior who will be pursuing postsecondary education, including any two or four year college/educational institution and/or trade school. Up to three $500 scholarships will be awarded to students who have demonstrated their commitment to trying their best and working hard academically, who believe in the importance of giving back through their commitment to volunteer work, and who have represented their community in a responsible, compassionate and ethical manner. All students are encouraged to apply regardless of GPA.

FREDERICK STEEPLECHASERS RUNNING CLUB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 15
Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club Memorial Scholarship is open to high school seniors in Frederick County, Maryland. The club will award two (2) scholarships of $2,500 each, plus additional awards at the club's discretion. Applications will be accepted at this link until Friday, April 15, at 11:59 PM ET.
LOUYAA SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 17
LOUYAA Scholarship will be awarded to one graduating senior from Urbana High School, Linganore High School and Oakdale High School. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and be a past or present participant in a LOUYAA sports program, either as a player or as a coach. The application is available on Naviance and in the guidance office. The scholarship is for $1,000 and the application deadline is Monday, April 17.
ATHLETIC BOOSTERS SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE IS APRIL 28
The Urbana High School Athletics Boosters is awarding a $1,000 scholarship each to one senior female student athlete and one senior male student athlete. All applications are due by Friday, April 28, and should be emailed to: president@uhsathleticboosters.com with a cc: to Karin Bauer, Athletic Director, at karin.bauer@fcsp.org.

Specific to Camp Staff, applications should be submitted no later than Friday, April 21. Camp trainings begin as early as the end of May and continue into June. Seasonal Park Technicians may begin weekend work as early as Saturday, April 1. Parks also have flexible start dates, if the applicant needs to wait until the school year has ended.

All graduation practices are MANDATORY! (See the Class of 2023 Info Packet.) Any senior who wishes to be excused from a graduation practice, for any reason, must submit their request in writing to Ms. Clabaugh by Monday, May 1.

CLASS OF 2023 CAP & GOWN ORDERS
All seniors participating in graduation MUST have a cap, gown, and 2023 tassel.
The price of the cap and gown has increased incrementally from the original price:
- March 2 – May 3: $10 more
- May 4 – $15 more plus shipping
Due to the change in design last year, seniors may only use caps and gowns from former graduates of the Class of 2022.

"DANCE 4 CHANGE" FUNDRAISER DEDICATED TO ELLA BRESEE
On Tuesday, April 4, the National Dance Honor Society for Dance Arts will be hosting the “Dance 4 Change” recital at 7 PM in the UHS Auditorium. Come out and support the UHS dancers as they Dance for a Cure. Tickets are $5 at the door and all proceeds will benefit childhood brain cancer research. This year’s fundraiser performance is dedicated to Ella Bresee. Students are encouraged to wear yellow or an “Ella Strong” t-shirt to show their support. We hope to see you there.
NATIONAL MATH HONOR SOCIETY is celebrating Pi Day through the gift of giving. Join in by donating circular pantry staples such as canned vegetables, beans, soups, meats, and fruits to support the Greater Urbana Area Food Bank. Donations of baby food, toiletries, and paper products are also greatly appreciated. The donation box will be located in the main stairwell through Wednesday, April 5.

EARTH DAY ACTIVITY: Cleaning out your closets during Spring Break? The Urbana Green Team, along with the Youth Climate Institute members, will be hosting a Clothing Swap and Shop on Friday, April 21, in recognition of Earth Day. Clothing waste is prevalent throughout the world, but FAST FASHION and CONSUMERISM is making the issue worse! Reduce your carbon footprint and clean out your closet by participating in our Swap and Shop! Please donate any used clothing or shoes to our school. Students may drop off donated items in Mrs. McCook's classroom during the week of April 17-20. Students will receive one ticket per donated item. They may choose to shop with their tickets or donate them for others to use for "shopping". Participants will be entered into a raffle for prizes.
FINAL EXAM SURVIVAL KITS NOW AVAILABLE
Would you like to send a snack pack of goodies, test taking tips and more to your child? Would you like to recognize a teacher for efforts put forth in helping to prepare your child for an exam? If so, purchase a Final Exam Survival Kit. UHS Drama Boosters are taking orders until Friday, April 21. For $10, your child (or teacher) will receive a bag of goodies, snacks, and more, to prepare them for any and all exams. The bag will be delivered prior to their FIRST exam. F-WING LIVE 2023
Mark your calendars! F-Wing Live returns to the UHS Stage on Thursday, April 20, at 7 PM! This fun-filled Cabaret event features performances from members of our Drama, Choral, Dance, Orchestra and Band Programs. There is also a visual display of art work from our Visual Arts Department! New this year, we will have Poetry readings and more from the National English Honor Society. Proceeds will benefit upgrades to the auditorium and stage equipment to help the Performing Arts Department continue to provide quality performances for our community. Tickets to this event are $5.
UHS DRAMA ADVANCED ACTING PRESENTS ITS ANNUAL DINNER THEATER
On Thursday, May 11, and Friday, May 12, please join us on stage as the Drama Department presents its annual Dinner Theater! The Acting 3-4 class presents Who's Dying to be a Millionaire? A Comedic Murdery Mystery! This unique theatrical experience allows audiences to sit on stage and be treated to a full course meal, served by the actors themselves, prior to the full-length show. Tickets are only $25, which includes the cost of the meal and the show. Please return the Dinner Theater Ticket Order Form promptly, as there are only 40 seats available per night!
