Veterans Day
News from the Office
Dear Urbana Community:
Earlier today, I shared a notice that Mark Kavanaugh, long-time UHS teacher, died after a long battle with cancer.
Throughout the day, staff reminisced about the profound impact Mr. Kavanaugh and his teaching had, both on an entire generation of UHS students and on the many colleagues who were fortunate enough to work alongside him.
I imagine that in the days and weeks ahead, there will be many stories shared of Mark’s incredible impact on our school community. Sharing these stories will help us all begin to heal from our loss.
In these times, I hope that everyone will consider Mark as a model and take all the time needed to listen and to love their family and friends. Staff members are here to support students and others in our community. Please feel free to contact any of our school counselors or administrators, or call our school at 240-236-7600.
Mr. Kavanaugh always maintained a positive and forward-thinking mind. He would have been among the loudest to cheer for UHS teacher Ida Davis, who will be honored as a nominee for the FCPS Veterans in Education Service Award at a program this coming Thursday. Congratulations, Mrs. Davis. Thanks to you and to all the veterans who continue to serve through their work at UHS!
With warm wishes,
Dave Kehne, Principal
Morning High School Classes Becoming Standardized

Classes that begin at 8:30 am will remain active until 9:50 am. Classes that begin at 10 am will remain active until 11:20 am. Teachers and students are expected to attend for the full period. This new expectation supports more-uniform instruction for all of students. Questions? Please contact any of our administrators.
The IB Program at UHS is a rigorous curriculum that provides students the opportunity to dive deeper into their subjects and make connections between their knowledge and the real world.
All interested 8th, 9th, and 10th grade students are welcome to apply. Students in 9th or 10th grade should look at the Pre-IB Recommendations before applying to be sure they will be able to complete the necessary courses before starting the program in 11th grade.
Application materials and additional information about the IB are available on the UHS IB Program website: sites.google.com/fcps.org/international-baccalaureate-pr/home/application-information
All application materials, including teacher recommendations and transcripts, must be received by 5 pm on January 5, 2021. Students should send their completed applications to: UHSIBProgram@fcps.org. Transcripts should also be submitted via email to the same address. Teacher recommenders can access the recommendation form though the link provided by the student or from the UHS IB website.
Questions about the application, program, or deadlines should be directed to UHSIBProgram@fcps.org.
