News from the Office
Autumn Greetings!
We’ve had a fantastic week at UHS. Spirit Week, organized by the SGA, kept things lively and provided us an opportunity to promote Hawk Pride. As a part of the week, the Safe and Sane Committee held two events, a senior shirt distribution on Monday and a community parade yesterday. Both events gave us opportunities to see students in a safe and spirited setting. Throughout the week, we held a food drive to benefit the Urbana Area Food Bank. I’m pleased to share that earlier today we literally filled a van to capacity with all of the donated food, thanks to the very generous community we serve. Thank you, all!
It was great, too, to see the masked faces of nearly 400 students who came to school to take the PSAT on Wednesday. The testing went very smoothly - students adhered to social distancing and mask protocols within the building. I was pleased with the great care our staff took to keep students safe and how cooperative and focused our students were. Students seemed pleased, and a perhaps little nervous, coming back into the building. It was sad to see them leave when the PSAT was over. We’re already looking forward to seeing many of our seniors who’ve signed up to take the SAT on October 27.
As announced earlier today via a Find Out First message, beginning next week all classes will meet on Wednesdays and we will begin our Advisement program, both of which are noted in the FCPS high school schedule. By making Wednesday classes mandatory, we’re increasing classroom time and continuity and our Advisement program will support FCPS social-emotional learning curriculum.
With three weeks remaining in the term, I want to remind students and parents that UHS staff are available during student support times, listed in green on our school schedule, to provide academic assistance. After-school tutoring opportunities are also available at UHS. More information about after-school opportunities can be found in the UHS Virtual Learning Handbook.
I hope everyone enjoys what looks like a true fall weekend in Maryland!
With Hawk Pride,
Dave Kehne, Principal
The Student Information Card traditionally sent home with students on the first day of school was moved online this year as the Returning Student Registration Form.
This year's form arrived via email from PowerSchool, with a weekly reminder email sent to parents who have not yet completed the form. All parents of returning students should complete the Returning Student Registration Form. When completed, school registrars update student, parent and emergency contact information. This, in turn, updates the parent's Find Out First email address.
Parents who have not received the email from PowerSchool with the link to update student information for this school year should contact AnnMarie.Kline@fcps.org as soon as possible.
Please join us for a virtual UHS PTSA Meeting on Wednesday, October 21, at 7 pm, by emailing UHSPTSAfundraiser@gmail.com for access. We will be wrapping up last year, learning about this year so far and taking nominations to be on the Board.
We will also hear the latest from Principal Kehne and find out how you can be a part of the UHS PTSA. (You can find our Membership Form on the Urbana website under the Parents/Students tab).
Even though we are virtual so far this year, the PTSA is still very important.
Hope to see you there!

To continue its work, the YAC is soliciting feedback from youth/teens living in the City of Frederick regarding future projects, advocacy work, and more through a quick survey. The survey will remain open until Friday, October 30, 2020.
"Although COVID19 has halted many of our plans, over the past year we have created and distributed a survey to teenagers, been involved with the Golden Mile Alliance, started to create a student discount for high schoolers, and more. UHS GREEN TEAM Weekly Tip:
This week, we are asking you to turn your car engine off while your car is stopped. Some newer model cars may even be equipped to do this automatically. Last year, the UHS Green Team instituted "No Idling Zones" at UHS and we would like our community to continue to be idle free. Car idling is a serious problem that releases harmful pollutants, wastes money, and emits dangerous carcinogens.
Did you know that if everyone in the U.S. stopped idling for five minutes a day it would be equivalent to taking five hundred thousand cars off the road and saving 1.6 million tons of CO2? Turn your key, be idle free!
Check out the EPA's Idle Free Schools flyer to learn more.
Attendance Reminder for Parents: If your student knows they will be late or will need to log off early from their Google Meet instruction, please have them reach out to their teacher directly. If your student misses the entire session, please email the attendance office at UHS.Attendance@fcps.org.
