News from the Office
Each year on Patriot Day, many in our community are reminded of the attacks on September 11, 2001. We recall a day of great sorrow and tremendous loss, but also a day that exemplified the triumph of the human spirit. We recall stories of incredible sacrifice and heroism as first responders and average citizens rushed to the aid of others. In 2001, our Congress designated September 11 as Patriot Day, a national day of service, that calls Americans across the country to volunteer in their local communities to honor the selfless sacrifice of so many on that day and many days since.
I appreciate that here in the Urbana school community, that spirit of service resonates not only on one day but also throughout the year. As all in our community continue to live through the current pandemic, we are called to find new ways to serve our community and our country.
In the weeks ahead, Hawk News will feature several of our booster organizations and invite their leaders to share opportunities for service. I hope some of our followers will become active members of these important organizations.
With Hawk Pride,
Dave Kehne, Principal
Frederick County Public Schools staff is providing live virtual instruction as an important part of the Full Virtual Model of instruction. In the event that students are unable to attend live virtual instruction via Google Meet, these sessions or parts of these sessions may be video and audio recorded. The recorded session will be available for students who would like to review that content and instruction. We are balancing student privacy and the need for flexibility during this unprecedented pandemic.
The Frederick County Public Schools Parent Guide to Google Meet Recordings, Student Privacy and Security was sent via a Find Out First (FOF) message last week and provides an overview of how the Google Meet recordings will be used and the methods used to ensure student privacy and security. Please review this Parent Guide HERE to help understand how Google Meet recordings will be used in instruction and the security safeguards in place to protect student privacy.
Parent permission is required for teachers to record your student in the Google Meet. Teachers may begin recording the week of September 8th. Students without permission will be asked to turn off their cameras and audio during the recorded portion of the lesson. Our goal is to get this additional resource online and available to students as soon as possible.
LAST CALL - IMMEDIATE RESPONSE REQUESTED: Parents have two ways to let schools know whether or not their student has permission to be recorded in Google Meet. Please complete either Option #1 or Option #2.
Option #1: (RECOMMENDED): Google Form that can be filled out and submitted online using THIS LINK.
OR
Option #2: Use THIS PDF FORM that can be electronically filled out, attached, and returned via email to Urbana.HS@fcps.org.

Many parents/guardians have already connected to their child(ren)'s Schoology account using their Parent Access Code. If you have not yet created a parent account in Schoology, please use the information that was mailed home in August to create your account and connect with your child(ren)'s accounts. You should have also received an email that included the Schoology Parent Access Code, which is the same code as the one mailed home. If you do not have your Parent Access Code, please contact your child's counselor or administrator.

We are proud to announce that Urbana High School received the MARYLAND GREEN SCHOOL AWARD for our growing environmental awareness and actions! Please continue to think about your actions both at home and in our community as we try to be the best stewards of our Earth! We will provide regular tips on how to GREEN UP a bit.
UHS GREEN TEAM Weekly Tip #2: Are you helping your local pollinators? Insects around the world are disappearing before our eyes. The rate of extinctions in insects is eight times higher than mammals and reptiles. This is a huge problem for all of us that rely heavily on plants that are pollinated by insects for our food. On the other hand, there is plenty we can do to help the bees and our other pollinator friends!! Try to plant flowers that are native, vibrant, and bloom from early spring to late fall. You can also try your hand at making bee hotels, cute wooden structures that act as homes for solitary bees. Check out this LINK for more tips and ways to get started.
FCPS is extending free "to go" breakfast and lunch service through December 2020 to all children ages 18 and younger, following recent approval from the United States Department of Agriculture. FCPS will also provide meals for adults 19 and older who are enrolled in an FCPS program for people with disabilities.
There are 34 FCPS schools that will distribute food from the kitchen serving line, including Centerville E.S. and Windsor Knolls M.S. In addition, four drop-off community sites will be distributing food from a school bus. Please visit www.fcpsnutrition.com for a complete list of schools providing meals, and for more information about the program.
