FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Greetings:
I have had an opportunity to visit many of our classes and am impressed with the focus and energy that our students and staff have demonstrated in these first days of our fully virtual semester.
Urbana High School is planning to offer a host of virtual clubs this semester. There are many reasons high schoolers should consider joining a club: students who are members of high school clubs report higher levels of belonging and satisfaction with high school, and they tend to have higher levels of academic achievement.
To provide students and parents with a preview of the clubs that will be available, a Virtual Club Fair will be held September 9th – 11th. Detailed information about the fair will be published next week. Students will have an opportunity to sign up for clubs September 14th – 17th.
With best wishes for a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend.
Dave Kehne, Principal

PARENT PERMISSION FOR GOOGLE MEET RECORDINGS
Frederick County Public Schools staff is providing live virtual instruction as an important part of the Full Virtual Model of instruction. In the event that students are unable to attend live virtual instruction via Google Meet, these sessions or parts of these sessions may be video and audio recorded. The recorded session will be available for students who would like to review that content and instruction. We are balancing student privacy and the need for flexibility during this unprecedented pandemic.
The Frederick County Public Schools Parent Guide to Google Meet Recordings, Student Privacy and Security was sent via a Find Out First (FOF) message earlier this week and provides an overview of how the Google Meet recordings will be used and the methods used to ensure student privacy and security. Please review this Parent Guide HERE to help understand how Google Meet recordings will be used in instruction and the security safeguards in place to protect student privacy.
Parent permission is required for teachers to record your student in the Google Meet. Teachers may begin recording the week of September 8th. Students without permission will be asked to turn off their cameras and audio during the recorded portion of the lesson. Our goal is to get this additional resource online and available to students as soon as possible.
IMMEDIATE RESPONSE REQUESTED: Parents have two ways to let schools know whether or not their student has permission to be recorded in Google Meet. Please complete either Option #1 or Option #2 below by Tuesday, September 8.
Option #1: (RECOMMENDED): Google Form that can be filled out and submitted online using THIS LINK.
OR
Option #2: PDF form (LINK) that can be electronically filled out, attached, and returned via email to Urbana.HS@fcps.org.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
To all eligible National Honor Society students and parents:
FCPS has made an executive decision to delay the start process of NHS. We will begin notifying eligible students via mail starting the week of October 5th. At that time, information will go live regarding the application and process.
Note on eligibility: An eligible student must have a 3.5 weighted GPA and is currently a junior or senior registered as an FCPS student.
Please email questions to our NHS advisor, Ms. Rowe, at Kristen.Rowe@fcps.org.
UHS GREEN TEAM
We are proud to announce that Urbana High School received the MARYLAND GREEN SCHOOL AWARD for our growing environmental awareness and actions! Please continue to think about your actions both at home and in our community as we try to be the best stewards of our Earth! We will provide regular tips on how to GREEN UP a bit.
Weekly Tip #1: Are you Recycling right? Evaluate your home recycling plan....do you recycle more than you throw away? Try to consider increasing your recycling for the next week. Clean your bottles and cans, throw away any plastic film like baggies and bags (or don't use them). Take a look at this link to see what Frederick County would like you to put in your bin: frederickcountymd.gov/3939/Recycle-Right. But remember, if in doubt throw it out!
FREE BREAKFAST & LUNCH PROGRAM
FCPS is extending free "to go" breakfast and lunch service through December 2020 to all children ages 18 and younger, following recent approval from the United States Department of Agriculture. FCPS will also provide meals for adults 19 and older who are enrolled in an FCPS program for people with disabilities.
There are 34 FCPS schools that will distribute food from the kitchen serving line, including Centerville E.S. and Windsor Knolls M.S. In addition, there are four drop-off community sites that will distribute food from a school bus. Please visit www.fcpsnutrition.com for a complete list of schools providing meals, and for more information about the program.
STUDENT SCHEDULES
Our School Counselors have worked through nearly all of our schedule change requests.
To request a schedule change:
1) Complete the request for schedule change form. This can be found on the UHS website in the "counseling" area, in Naviance in the "document resources" link, or in earlier Schoology communication as an attached file.
2) Send the completed form to uhsschedulechanges@gmail.com (NOT your counselor's e-mail). Schedule changes sent to counselor's individual email addresses may be missed as staff will monitor the gmail account noted for requests.
3) The deadline to request a schedule change is September 14.
4) If your schedule change can be completed, you will see the corrected schedule in Schoology as soon as the change is completed. If your schedule cannot be changed, your counselor will contact you via either Schoology, an e-mail or a phone call.
5) Seniors may change classes in both the fall and spring semesters.
6) Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors may only change first semester classes. If the schedule change process proceeds in a timely manner, we may open up second semester changes for these students; we will keep our school community informed if we are able to do this.
7) There are no SSL blocks for the fall semester.
8) Work study blocks require paperwork to be submitted to Ms. DeWaal (Deirdra.DeWaal@fcps.org) and her approval. Once you submit work study paperwork, Ms. DeWaal will inform your counselor and we will update your schedule. Please contact Ms. DeWaal directly with questions regarding work study.
PSAT / NMSQT
Registration is open for the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). Please note that there are LIMITED SEATS AVAILABLE.
Exam Date: Wednesday, October 14 Location: UHS Time: 8 am to approximately 12:15 pm (Students report to the building by 7:30 am) Fee: $18
Registration Information: Use the following link to register: user.totalregistration.net/PSAT/210671. The registration site opened on Tuesday, August 25, and closes Thursday, September 10, at 11:59 pm. It is important to register and pay as soon as possible. When registering, be sure to indicate whether transportation (FCPS bus) will be needed.
We are still in the process of determining the number of students we can accommodate based on social distancing guidelines and staffing. Once that number is determined, we will choose students based on the order of registration. Students exceeding that number will be placed on a waitlist. 11th graders will be given priority due to the necessity of taking the test in that year for NMSQT eligibility.
Important Tips for Registration
Fee & Payment: The test fee is $18. Payments must be received via Total Registration by September 15. Those students whose payment is not received by September 15 will be removed from the test roster; their spot will be given to a student on the waitlist. Due to limited seating, late payments will not be accepted.
If the PSAT is canceled, payments will be refunded. Additionally, if a student does not take the test on test day, a refund will need to be requested by October 20.
Students who are free/reduced lunch status will not be required to pay. (If you are not classified as free/reduced lunch status, but believe you may qualify, please contact Ann Marie Kline at AnnMarie.Kline@fcps.org for a copy of the FARM registration.)
Questions? Contact either Jon Walton (Jonathan.Walton@fcps.org), Kelly Schwartz (Kelly.Schwartz@fcps.org) or Melinda Wood (Melinda.Wood@fcps.org) with questions regarding the PSAT. Please be aware that with the start of the school year, response time for questions may be considerably longer than usual.
