FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome back, Hawk Community!
It has been a very humbling week at UHS. Our phenomenal faculty and staff returned and brought with them incredible energy and enthusiasm. Our teachers have once again demonstrated impressive knowledge of not only their curricular content but also of ways to deliver instruction virtually. Our school counselors continue to do incredible work making sure that new and returning students are scheduled in classes that not only promote strong academic achievement but also allow for social and emotional support. Lastly, all UHS staff are highly commended for their work to remain current as state and local regulations and practices are continually being adjusted. We are fortunate to have a most agile staff at UHS.
An orientation video for new and returning students is posted on the UHS web page. Teachers have posted introductory videos in their online Schoology classrooms. We encourage students and parents to review these “on demand” presentations.
FCPS has created a Schoology resource page for parents and students who need assistance with Schoology. Each student and parent password was sent in a letter mailed to each student’s home last week.
Although we are opening in a virtual format, we will have a daily schedule. Comprehensive information for UHS families is available at the Urbana High Virtual Learning Handbook.
While there are seemingly new things to be mindful of at the start of this particular school year, it will be essential to student success that everyone support strong and timely attendance every day. Classes start promptly at 8:30 am most school days. Our school office will be open at 8 am daily and, even in a virtual format, we know teachers and office staff will be very busy each morning.
We look forward to an incredible and memorable year.
With Hawk Pride,
Dave Kehne, Principal

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
To all eligible National Honor Society students and parents:
FCPS has made an executive decision to delay the start process of NHS. We will begin notifying eligible students via Schoology starting the week of October 5th. At that time, information will go live regarding the application and process.
Note on eligibility: An eligible student must have a 3.5 weighted GPA and is currently a junior or senior registered as an FCPS student.
Please email questions to the NHS advisor, Ms. Rowe, at Kristen.Rowe@fcps.org.
IT'S ALMOST TIME!
Are you ready for the first day of school? Did you receive your new passwords? Has your child logged in to the Chrome browser and Schoology?
See the videos: How to Log in to Chrome How to Log in to Schoology
Do you have your school supplies ready? Do you have a workspace set up? Is it a good place to focus and join a Google Meet?
Returning students may want to consider resetting Chrome to start the school year with a clean Chrome experience. Review our Troubleshooting Guide to find the instructions for this process. Note: Once you complete the reset, you will have to log back into Chrome.
STUDENT SCHEDULES
Hard copies of student schedules and Schoology information were mailed on August 19. In addition, schedules were made available on Schoology on August 27.
To request a schedule change:
1) Complete the request for schedule change form. This can be found on the UHS website in the "counseling" area, in Naviance in the "document resources" link, or in earlier Schoology communication as an attached file.
2) Send the completed form to uhsschedulechanges@gmail.com (NOT your counselor's e-mail). Schedule changes sent to counselor's individual email addresses may be missed as staff will monitor the gmail account noted for requests.
3) The deadline to request a schedule change is September 14.
4) If your schedule change can be completed, you will see the corrected schedule in Schoology as soon as the change is completed. If your schedule cannot be changed, your counselor will contact you via either Schoology, an e-mail or a phone call.
5) Seniors may change classes in both the fall and spring semesters.
6) Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors may only change first semester classes. If the schedule change process proceeds in a timely manner, we may open up second semester changes for these students; we will keep our school community informed if we are able to do this.
7) There are no SSL blocks for the fall semester.
8) Work study blocks require paperwork to be submitted to Ms. DeWaal (Deirdra.DeWaal@fcps.org) and her approval. Once you submit work study paperwork, Ms. DeWaal will inform your counselor and we will update your schedule. Please contact Ms. DeWaal directly with questions regarding work study.
PSAT / NMSQT
Registration is open for the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). Please note that there are LIMITED SEATS AVAILABLE.
Exam Date: Wednesday, October 14 Location: UHS Time: 8 am to approximately 12:15 pm (Students report to the building by 7:30 am) Fee: $18
Registration Information: Use the following link to register: https://user.totalregistration.net/PSAT/210671. The registration site opened on Tuesday, August 25, and closes Thursday, September 10, at 11:59 pm. It is important to register and pay as soon as possible. When registering, be sure to indicate whether transportation (FCPS bus) will be needed.
We are still in the process of determining the number of students we can accommodate based on social distancing guidelines and staffing. Once that number is determined, we will choose students based on the order of registration. Students exceeding that number will be placed on a waitlist. 11th graders will be given priority due to the necessity of taking the test in that year for NMSQT eligibility.
Important Tips for Registration
Fee & Payment: The test fee is $18. Payments must be received via Total Registration by September 15. Those students whose payment is not received by September 15 will be removed from the test roster; their spot will be given to a student on the waitlist. Due to limited seating, late payments will not be accepted.
If the PSAT is canceled, payments will be refunded. Additionally, if a student does not take the test on test day, a refund will need to be requested by October 20.
Students who are free/reduced lunch status will not be required to pay. (If you are not classified as free/reduced lunch status, but believe you may qualify, please contact Ann Marie Kline at AnnMarie.Kline@fcps.org for a copy of the FARM registration.)
Questions? Contact either Jon Walton (Jonathan.Walton@fcps.org), Kelly Schwartz (Kelly.Schwartz@fcps.org) or Melinda Wood (Melinda.Wood@fcps.org) with questions regarding the PSAT. Please be aware that with the start of the school year, response time for questions may be considerably longer than usual.
