Last Day for Seniors
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Greetings!
We’re past mid-term and our seniors have only one week of classes. Parents, this is a time when we need your help to keep our students committed to academic excellence. With the warmer weather, it is all too easy to think summer is here but we’ve got a few weeks left and UHS always finishes strong.
You may have received forms from your child's teachers this past week giving you the option to choose a letter grade instead of P/I COL for term 4. At the same time, you may have been asked by your child's teachers to respond to an email consenting to be able to use synchronous instruction, or live video streaming, for academic help. Believe me, your teachers would love for it to be all in one form, but because you have a choice class by class, it creates multiple options and multiple responses. I apologize for what I'm sure is more inconvenience and extra time, but with those choices comes a little more work.
Next week, some of our seniors will be briefly visiting the school as one of several opportunities to mark their graduation. While it doesn’t make it any easier for the Class of 2020, I want to remind everyone that their class is historic in the way they are readying to graduate. I’m proud of their resilience and of the support they are showing for each other.
For now, continue to stay well, everyone.
With Hawk Pride,
Dave Kehne, Principal

LETTER GRADE OPT IN SURVEYS
FCPS previously announced that term 4 grades would be reported as P (Pass) or ICOL (Incomplete Continuity of Learning) unless parents/guardians opt in for traditional letter grades (A, B, C, etc). You should have received an email from each of your child(ren)'s teachers with a survey form for their class. Please fill out the survey once for each teacher. If you did not receive the survey, you may either contact your student's teacher via email or check their Schoology page.
Letter grade decisions for seniors must be made by Friday, May 22. Letter grade decisions for grades 9, 10, 11 must be made by Wednesday, June 10.
Questions? Please contact your child's teacher, school counselor, or administrator.

EXAM REVIEW BOOK DRIVE
ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS: Do you have any AP, IB, SAT, or other exam review books that you no longer want or need? If so, consider donating them to ApCYCLE!
ApCYCLE is a student-led organization aiming to provide disadvantaged students across Maryland with access to exam review books to allow for greater success in their college-level exams and futures. Last year, students at Urbana High donated over 30 books, which directly benefited Baltimore City Public Schools; this year, we can double that number with your help! To learn more, visit http://apcycledonate.weebly.com.
See the flyer: ApCYCLE
AP EXAMS
Exam dates are May 11-22 with the make-up window from June 1-5. See the AP Exam Schedule 2020 for specific exam dates and local Eastern Time Zone start times.
A Few Reminders:
If you have any AP related questions or concerns, please contact Becky Hackett at Rebecca.Hackett@fcps.org.
YEARBOOKS
New for UHS: Digital Yearbooks!
Due to the current pandemic, our yearbook printing plant was closed for several weeks. Because of this, our yearbooks will be delayed in arriving at UHS. Despite this, students who have purchased yearbooks will have an opportunity to view a virtual yearbook very soon.
UHS has negotiated to provide a virtual yearbook at no additional charge to each student who has already purchased a yearbook.
PlusOne App The virtual yearbook will be available on mobile devices (smartphones, iPads, etc.) via a free app called PlusOne by Herff Jones. After downloading the app, log in using student name and student ID number.
When will the digital yearbook be available? In celebration of the Class of 2020, earliest access to the digital yearbook will be given to seniors. The virtual yearbook will remain available online at least until hard copies have been made available at UHS for distribution.
Will I still get my printed yearbook? How? Yes! As soon as we receive printed yearbooks at UHS, we will work out a plan to make yearbooks available safely, and as efficiently as possible. UHS will follow all social distancing requirements in effect at the time.
Yearbook questions? Contact Kristin.Johnson@fcps.org.

We are working closely with the Frederick County Health Department, the Maryland Department of Health, and the Maryland State Department of Education to monitor the status of COVID-19. The Governor continues to define education as an essential service, with travel permitted to schools to obtain materials for distance learning and meals to go, while school buildings remain closed to the public for the remainder of the school year.
To keep the community informed on this matter, FCPS posts related information and updates online at www.fcps.org/update. NOTES FROM THE COUNSELING OFFICE
1) Attention parents of current juniors (rising seniors). The senior brag sheet is available in Naviance for all current juniors. This is a required task of all students who wish to have their counselor write them a letter of recommendation for a four-year university. In addition, the counseling office uses this document to aid in writing all letters of recommendation. We would ask that students review and slowly work on completing this assignment by the end of term four at the latest. If you have any questions, please contact your child's counselor.
2) The Counseling Office has posted a needs assessment on Naviance for all students. We are asking some basic wellness questions and using it as a chance to get feedback on what our office can do to aid students while in remote learning. If your child has not completed the assessment, please have them complete it in the near future in order to help the counseling office provide support for those that need it.
3) All seniors should update their "college I'm attending" in Naviance upon finalizing their college choice. We use this screen to know where to send final transcripts at the end of the school year. Students can finalize their choice by logging into Naviance and navigating to the "Colleges" menu. Once inside the Colleges menu, they can go to "College I'm Applying To" which allows students to designate the "College I'm Attending." You would select that college and hit save.
