THE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Vaping continues to be a growing issue throughout all high schools in America. While vaping has taken the place of smoking for some students, others are using cartridges that contain THC. Cartridges containing THC have significantly higher concentrations of THC as compared to marijuana. The ingestion of THC at this level of concentration often results in medical emergencies—loss of consciousness, vomiting, breathing complications, increase heart rate, etc. In addition, long term consequences of vaping and the effects of using devices that have been manufactured overseas with little to no chemical and production guidelines add to the danger of this habit.
If a student has a vaping device or cartridges at OHS, we will confiscate the vaping device and we will test the vaping cartridge to determine if it contains THC. Cartridges will not be returned to students or parents. Devices will be returned to parents or guardians of the students. If devices are not picked up within 30 days, they will be thrown away. Any vaping cartridge and device that tests positive for THC will be turned into the school Deputy (SRO) as charges may be filed.
Some parents are not aware of what to look for to determine if their child is starting to vape. Not sure what a device or cartridge looks like? If you visit any local VAPE store, a large variety of devices and cartridges will be available to view. If you don’t want to go into a store, Google “Vaping Devices Images” or “JUUL”. A large variety of devices and cartridges will be pictured. Some devices are very small and may look like a USB drive.
If you’d like some additional information about prevention. Visit the Frederick County Health Department at
