Oakdale High School
Weekly Bear News
Principal's Message
Greetings,
It’s hard to believe that another week has flown by! Our students and staff continue to amaze me with their creativity during distance learning. There have been excellent class discussions, virtual labs and lab demonstrations from our teachers, and peer collaboration. It is heart warming to see our students tutoring and collaborating with one another.
As a reminder, be sure to check Schoology each and every day. Not only are assignments posted for each course each day, but students belong to groups for their grade (Class of 2021, Class of 2022, etc.). We post important grade specific information in these groups, in addition to sending Find Out Firsts. For example, our seniors are currently working on the college application process and our counselors hosted a Q & A session for them about the process. There are also links in the Class of 2021 Schoology page for seniors to sign up for senior conferences. This is their opportunity to speak with their counselor to plan for this year and to successfully transition to their post-secondary goals.
In each grade level Schoology group, we have also posted information on club sign ups, which end today, and the Virtual Bear Den tutoring and learning labs by department. I encourage students to sign up for a club and be involved in all of the extracurricular activities offered here at OHS. If students need assistance with their coursework, in addition to working with their teachers during the afternoon student support time, students should work with our teachers in the Virtual Bear Den.
Finally, as a reminder, next week is a full five-day week. The printed calendar handbook shows that Friday, September 25 is Fair Day, however, this was changed to a school day since there is no Fair this year.
Wishing you a lovely weekend!
Sincerely,
Lisa Smith, Principal

This week’s student of the week is Jack Stoffer. Jack was nominated by Ms. Adams because Jack reached out to her at the very start of this school year about opportunities for peer tutoring current AP Chem kids. At that point she had no idea how he would be able to help and asked him to give her a bit to think about it. Ms. Adams contacted Jack asking if he was still interested...he was. Through several chats he worked with her to organize and set up a peer tutoring opportunity that will be manned by 10 of our former AP chem students. He created a google form for sign ups and is coordinated with the peer tutors to create a schedule. He has done this all on his own and is going out of his way to help others who need the support. This is an exceptional task that he has undertaken, one that will no doubt be greatly valued by our current AP Chem students. This is definitely going above and beyond! As this week’s Student of the Week, Jack will receive a coupon for one free admission ticket to an Oakdale High School event. Way to go Jack!

Schoology Groups
In order to keep students up to date, OHS has created Schoology groups for students by graduation class year (ex: class of 2022). General reminders for students in all grades will be posted on Schoology in the class specific group.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. The program honors middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state, and national level.
Local Honorees will be selected at WHS and other schools/organizations in November. These honorees will each receive a Certificate of Achievement and advance to state-level judging. Local Honorees who qualify also receive the President's Volunteer Service Award. An independent judging organization names the top middle level and high school volunteer in each state and Washington, D.C. Results are announced in early February. Then, 10 National Honorees are chosen by a panel of prominent public figures, and announced at a special ceremony in Washington, D.C., in May.
Who is eligible?
Any young person who:
Is in grades 5-12 as of November 10.
Is a legal resident of any U.S. state or Washington, D.C.
Has engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred at least in part after September 1.
Submits a completed application and submits it to a school principal or the head of an officially designated local organization by November 10.
What qualifications must be met?
The application must:
Describe an individual's community service activity or an individual's significant leadership in a group activity that has taken place during the previous year.
Be completed and submitted to a school principal or the head of an officially designated local organization by November 10.
Be certified by the principal of a middle level or high school or the head of an officially designated local organization
If you've made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, you could win $1,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. by applying for a Prudential Spirit of Community Award! Even more importantly, you could win recognition that might inspire other young people to follow your example. These prestigious awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, have honored tens of thousands of middle level and high school students solely for their volunteer work since 1995.
Apply at: https://spirit.prudential.com for the 2021 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.
Complete the application and the parent & student agreement; then, on the "certification" page, download & e-mail the instructions to the Counseling Office - this is due on November 10.
More information on the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards can be found at: https://spirit.prudential.com/.
During virtual learning at FCPS, students interested in the FCPS Academy for the Fine Arts (AFA) are encouraged to sign up for a virtual Shadow Day, held once monthly on a Thursday from 12:30 - 1:30 PM. The first one will be Thursday Sept 24.
During the visit, students will get a virtual tour of the program and have the opportunity to meet staff and students while participating in a question-and-answer session.
Open to students countywide in FCPS grades 10-12, the AFA is a college and career pathway program that offers focus areas in dance, music, theatre and visual arts. Based at Governor Thomas Johnson High School, the AFA meets during the first two instructional blocks only, permitting students to attend their neighborhood school programs for the afternoons. Transportation to and from TJ High is provided via FCPS Career and Technology Center shuttles.
The AFA provides an intense curriculum that challenges and engages serious high school students while fostering refinement of individual artistic styles, techniques and portfolio development through enrichment opportunities like field trips, concerts, plays, museums, workshops and interaction with professional artists and mentors.
Auditions for the AFA will take place on Saturdays, February 20 and 27.
To register for a virtual shadow day, visit the AFA Website. https://www.fcpsartsacademy.org/afa-virtual-visit.html
