News from the Principal's Desk
The last week with seniors is exciting, energetic, and bittersweet- all at once! For the students, it is the culmination of four years of hard work, and the excitement that the moment that they have waited for has finally arrived. For the parents, it is the realization that the cute kindergartener they put on the bus nearly thirteen years ago is on the cusp of adulthood. And for staff, it is very affirming to look at how these young adults have progressed as students- their abilities, their willingness to take risks and perhaps the passions they have discovered along the way. Despite the anxiety, challenges, and “bumps in the road” that most students experience, high school remains a wonderful time of life. Tuscarora’s Senior Class of 2019 has made us all proud with their many accomplishments and service.
As we move to the celebration that is graduation, a few reminders….all seniors must be present for ALL THREE days of graduation rehearsal, beginning on Tuesday at 8:00 AM SHARP. Students who arrive late will be required to remain for an additional time after the rehearsal. Punctuality is everything during this time. In addition, all financial obligation must be cleared with the finance office prior to Thursday in order to receive graduation tickets. If a senior still has a financial obligation, they will be made aware of it on Tuesday, May 28.
Families attending graduation are reminded that you must have tickets for every person attending the ceremony. All graduates receive six tickets and are encouraged to network with friends if they need extras. Those families that requested additional tickets via the email process will receive the additional tickets requested. The ceremony begins at the PNC Sports Complex on the campus of Mt. St Mary's University in Emmittsburg, Maryland PROMPTLY at 2:00PM. Graduates are to arrive NO LATER than 1:15pm. Please arrive early, allow time for parking and getting settled.
A reminder of parents of underclass students about Friday, May 31 (Graduation Day): The majority of the staff of Tuscarora High School attends the graduation ceremony. Underclass students will be permitted to leave school after second block on Friday, May 31 at approximately 10:15 AM if they bring back a signed permission form from their parent. This permission form was distributed earlier this week during 2nd Block, and must be signed/returned to the 2nd Block Teacher no later than Thursday, May 30. Any student who does not return a permission form will be expected to remain in the building until 2:15, and marked absent if not in class. Students who leave at 10:15 are permitted to walk home or be picked up. Buses, however will run at the normal time of 2:15. Any student who remains in school will be placed in a supervised study hall in the cafeteria. We very much look forward to celebrating with friends, family and the graduates of the class of 2019 next Friday at Mount St. Mary’s University.
Sincerely, Christopher Berry Principal

Attendance - Keeping Track of Your Student Through HAC
We are approaching the time of year when we receive questions from parents about attendance or there are discrepancies about when a student is in school. While it is rare, it is still disconcerting when parents discover multiple days when their son/daughter has not been in a particular class or has been out part or whole days. How then can parents know about attendance. This is where the Home Access Center (HAC) is useful. Below are directions for accessing and navigating in the HAC attendance features.
Attendance Month View Page - The Attendance Month View page enables you to view your student's attendance during any month in the current school year. If your student was absent or tardy on a date, the day will display with a colored background. The Color Legend below the month indicates the type of attendance each color represents. To display the Month View page, click Attendance on the HAC menu.
Change Months - To navigate from month to month in the current year, use the arrows at the top left and right of the calendar.
View Attendance Details - To view details for a date when your student was absent or tardy, move your pointer over the day. A tooltip displays the type of attendance entered by the office or teacher for the periods affected.
Calendar Page - The Calendar page provides a month view of the following information on your student, class assignments, class events and activity events. To display the Calendar page, click Home on the HAC menu, then click the Calendar tab.
Customize Calendar Information - To hide or display the Filter pane, click the Filter icon. To include or exclude information on the calendar, check or uncheck the appropriate boxes in the Filter pane on the left. To collapse the pane's Filters, Calendars, or Values section, click the section's down symbol. To expand a collapsed section, click the section's up symbol.
Change Calendar Views - To display other months, use the arrows to navigate forward or backward a month at a time. To display the week view for the current week, click Week. To display other weeks in the calendar's week view, use the arrows to navigate forward or backward a week at a time. To display the day view for the current day, click Day. To display other days, use the arrows to navigate forward or backward a day at a time. To return to the current month, week, or day in the above views, click Today.
See FCPS absence procedures.
Congratulations, Commendations and Kudos

Tuscarora Biomedical Program is Awarded Grant
The Capstone Project is an integral, culminating activity for the THS Project Lead the Way Biomedical Science Program. This winter, the Biomed program applied for a innovative grant from the Battelle National Biodefense Institute. The STEM Innovation Grant proposal went an extensive review and evaluation process by both FCPS and Battelle representatives. Using the reviewers’ feedback and the overall ranking of the proposal, the Tuscarora Biomed program was awarded $3,131 to support the purchase of a large poster printer to facilitate the Biomed Capstone Research Projects and Presentations. Congratulations to Ms. Crowell who facillitated this grant, and the students of the PLTW Biomed program!
