News from the Principal's Desk
Dear Titan Families,
Spring Break is just around the corner, and because it is so very late in the year in 2019, the end of the year activities loom large right after we get back. The THS Junior-Senior Prom is just after spring break and May kicks off end of the year awards programs, recognition and culminating activities for all of our communities within Tuscarora.
But I also want to acknowledge and thank our staff. Like our students, our staff are clearly focused on the important work they do here. Their academic leadership is exemplary. More than that though, they work so hard every day to nurture and encourage our students, to mentor and guide them, and to help them make safe and responsible choices. It never gets old when a students remind me: their teachers, staff, administrators, counselors and coaches are here for them. It is a clear strength of our school.
One such teacher at Tuscarora is Theresa Stevens, longtime agricultural science teacher. Many students do not know Ms. Stevens by name, but they know of her. She runs the greenhouse, she sponsors our Future Farmers of America activities. Her room is literally alive with plants, animals and a visual smorgasbord of interesting demos, labs and displays. And those students who do get to experience Ms. Stevens agriculture, horticulture or pre-vet class agree: it's different every day, it's challenging and it sparks passion in areas that students didn't even know were open to them. As a result of her dedication over many years to her students, Ms. Stevens was named today a Career and Technology Education "Teacher of the Year" for 2019! Please take some time to read the nomination below. I congratulate Ms. Stevens for FCPS' recognition of what we have known for years - she brings creativity, knowledge and passion everyday, and our students reap the benefits.
Another group that doesn't receive enough recognition for their tireless efforts are Tuscarora's Assistant Principals. Many of you know them as the friendly or consistent voice on the other end of a phone or email when you need answers regarding our school or your child. They forge strong relationships with our students, act as instructional leaders and perform myriad of tasks big and small every day to keep our school running. You see them before the school day and at evening events, long after the school day has ended. During this, National Assistant Principals Week, please join me in saluting the skilled leadership of Helen Golibart, Jody Ratti, Lisa Smith and Tanisha Smith, the Tuscarora High School Assistant Principal team.
Have a wonderful weekend and please catch a performance of Aida, our spring musical, if you get the opportunity!

Mystic Fire: American Poems in Song
Eight high school students who have competed in Poetry Out Loud are reciting poetry in the Frederick Chorale concert Mystic Fire: American Poems in Song on May 5 and 6. One of these students is Grace Knor, from Tuscarora High, who is the 2019 Maryland Poetry Out Loud State Champion. She will be competing for the national title at the end of April. The other students are Cora McDaniel, also from Tuscarora High, and Christian Due, Nathanael Milliken, Joshua Milliken, Alyson Flora, Natalie Flynn, and Katija Mirich, all from Oakdale High. The concert is made up of exceptional American poems that bloom as interpreted by American composers and The Frederick Chorale. THS Agricultural Science Teacher Theresa Stevens Honored by FCPS
Tuscarora High School Agricultural Science Teacher Theresa Stevens was today named as "FCPS Career and Technology Education Teacher of the Year" for 2019. The "prize patrol", consisting of CTE Coordinators Christine Pearl and Norm MacGaughey came to Tuscarora today to inform Ms. Steven she had been chosen, surprising her in front of her Small Animal Pre-Vet class. The students, joined by Principal Christopher Berry and Assistant Principal Jody Ratti applauded her selection! In placing her into nomination for this award. AP Ratti gave this assessment of Ms. Stevens' excellence.
As one of the leading agriculture teachers in FCPS, Ms. Stevens heads our Future Farmers of America club (who she took to St. Louis where they placed 5th in the nation), and is the leading voice in our agriculture program at THS. Her rapport with students who may otherwise not perform is unparalleled, and her ability to connect with anyone she meets allows her to show the possibilities that her program provides. Her commitment to the community of Tuscarora High School expands beyond the classroom as well. She supports staff and students in their endeavors, be they personal (designing flowers for multiple staff weddings), professional (seeking and providing professional learning), or academic (growing students seek out unconsidered career paths). Ms. Stevens is all that we could hope for in an agriculture teacher at Tuscarora, and we are #FCPSProud to nominate her for Outstanding High School CTE teacher of the year.
