From the Desk of the Principal
The SAT is Coming! On Wednesday, March 6, FCPS is providing the opportunity for all 11th grade students to take a real, College Board SAT for free. This is an incredible chance for juniors to measure where they stand in the college entrance process, as well as potentially attain “Career and College Ready” (CCR) status from the State of Maryland. Allow me to elaborate on both parts. March of the Junior year is a common time when students take their first real SAT. For some students, it may be the first of two times that they take the exam, and it allows them to determine if they wish to do more preparation prior to the 2nd test administration. It also allows students and families to see what 2 or 4 year colleges they may qualify for now or in the near future when they begin to apply. Life beyond high school begins to come into full focus as a result of this exam, and it’s exciting for many students to see what options they have.
The second value of the SAT is that, with a score on the Literacy or Math section above 500 and 550, respectively, students attain CCR status. What does this mean? Students that have attained this status do not need to take any remedial, 0 credit classes at Frederick Community College (FCC) or many other 2 years schools you may wish to attend. It is not a graduation requirement, but it is a “benefit” students may earn as a result of a qualifying SAT score. Too often, students have to begin college at FCC taking courses that earn them no credit. Attaining CCR is the student’s ticket out of these classes. In addition many 4-year schools have writing requirements that students can test out of with a high SAT score. So, the SAT is not just about getting INTO college, but where you START once you are in.
Please take a look at all of the recognition for students, staff and groups this week. It never ceases to amaze me how talented our students and staff are. Whether they are competing on the field, in the classroom, on the stage or making their mark in the "real world" Tuscarora Titans always continue to take our school and community name to great heights.
Have a wonderful, warm weekend,
Christopher Berry, Principal

We allow the coaches to contact the athletes to tell them of this award. We would both athletes to come to the WFMD studios at 5966 Grove Hill Road in Frederick at 6:00 pm on Thursday, February 21 to receive their award certificates, have photos taken for the WFMD Website and take part in a half hour "Frederick County Sports Weekend" program.

Student of the Week - February 22
Nadia Rusu - 10th grade
Nominated by Ms. Clark
"Nadia is a very studious and respectful student. I appreciate her hard work and how she is kind to other students."
Student of the Week - March 1
Abbey Hampson - 11th grade
Nominated by Coach O'Brien
Abbey goes out of her way to make the learning for life kids feel apart of the THS community. She was a member of the unified bocce team and all of our athletes wanted Abbey to be on their team. We had two team dinners and Abbey took it upon herself to help some of her teammates order their food, made sure they had enough money to pay for their meal and made sure she waited till their ride came to pick them up. Abbey is a great example of a student who looks to serve others before worrying about herself. This is a great trait she has and it will make her very successful in life. I'm very fortunate she calls me coach!
Lee and Rogers Win Peace Award
Ciana Lee and Faith Rogers have been nominated for the Frederick County Peace Awards for their hard work in leading the Ladies Luminaries group, so if you see them, please be sure to congratulate their efforts! The Student Peace Awards of Frederick County is a program under the care of Friends Meeting School in Ijamsville, Maryland. The overall goal of the program is to promote the values of peacemaking, conflict resolution and respect for all people, by recognizing students who are active as peacemakers in their school or community. Congratulations to THS English Teacher Amanda Kremnitzer, who earned the FCPS Vanguard Teacher Mindset and Teaching Practices micro-credentials. Likewise, a big congratulations goes to Titan Teacher Sarah Welker, who earned the FCPS Vanguard Teacher Instructional Technology Skills and Professional Learning and Networking micro-credentials. Both microcredentials require classroom time, senario work and reflective practices on teaching and learning. Way to go Ms. Krem and Ms. Welker!
Snyder to Be Rotary Speech Representative
Congrats to Kirsten Snyder who will represent Tuscarora High School in the Rotary Club Speech competition March 12th at Hood College! Each year the Rotary Clubs of Frederick County sponsor an annual Rotary 4-Way Test Speech Contest for juniors and seniors. Now that Kirsten has passed the THS level of competition she will go on to compete Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at 7:00PM at the Hood College Volpe Athletic Center's meeting room in front of the Rotary Club members. Four Frederick County winners will receive cash awards of 1st place $500, 2nd place $425, 3rd place $350 and 4th place $300. Local winners then advance to the district competition for a chance at larger cash prizes. This year Kirsten selected a controversial argument that college admissions should remove gender and race from the application process. Her speech must be no less than 5 minutes and no more than six minutes. The speech must include the 4-Way Test: 1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build good will and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

For the Maryland Promise Scholarship, there is also a separate application that is required to be completed on the MHEC website. The separate application should be posted to the MHEC website around April 1. Here is the link for additional information on the Community College Promise Scholarship: https://mhec.state.md.us/Pages/Community-College-Promise-Scholarship.aspx

o Guaranteed Access Grant;
o Campus-Based Educational Assistance Grant;
