From the Desk of the Principal
The end of First Semester is upon us. I want to congratulate students for working to successfully navigate the challenges of school. Whether you have achieved your goals or fell short, the effort and lessons learned can be just as important as the final tally. This is an exciting time of year. With new classes beginning next week, students have the opportunity to start fresh with their academics and their relationships. They also have the opportunity to continue the great habits they developed in the first half of the year. Encourage your child to take the time to make a good first impression in their new classes. They should strive to quickly understand what teachers expect and what they can do to learn the most and earn the best grade possible. It’s exciting to begin again; and hopefully students will see the opportunity that a new semester brings.
The New Student Registration Night was a great success on Thursday. Many thanks to the Tuscarora teachers, department, outside programs such as CTC, NJROTC and The Academy of Fine Arts for participating. Most especially, it is gratifying to see such a huge crowd of future Titans and their parents present.
As we begin the new semester next Tuesday, Tuscarora will raise awareness with a “Kindness Week”. The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive and positive bullying prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement. The Great Kindness Challenge is one week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible on school campus. We will have announcements, special theme-dress days, and teachers are encouraged to incorporate the challenge into their class activities. I would also encourage parents and students to participate in the challenge as well in this way: the end of the semester means that students have a new schedule, and sometimes move onto new teachers. Is there a teacher this semester that has gone the extra mile for your child? A counselor or staff member who your child talks about or is the source of a dinner conversation? Did an adult write a letter of recommendation, spend extra time after school or advise a club that has made a big difference in their life? Take the time now to write that email or note expressing thanks to that staff member. Most agree that educators do not reap the financial benefits of other professions, yet this simple act of kindness goes very far with those who work with your children every day to make a difference in their lives. How to reach a teacher via email? Simple, go on the THS website, find their first and last name with a period (.) in between first and last, and add the address “@fcps.org”
Have a warm extended weekend! Christopher Berry Principal

Attention: Students in grades 9-10
The FCPS Career and Technology Center (CTC) invites you to "shadow" a CTC program there.
A specialized FCPS high school, the CTC offers 25 career preparatory programs, most open to students in grades 10-12. Here's a link to programs offered:
https://education.fcps.org/ctc/programs.
Sign ups are opened for Shadowing appointments that will begin in November.
Students: A shadow experience provides an opportunity to experience a program of interest first-hand. You spend two class periods at the CTC in the program for which you might apply. You participate in classroom activities and are able to meet with and talk to the instructor and current students. The shadow experience is also a part of the CTC application process and acceptance criteria. Instructors evaluate students during the shadow experience on use of time, enthusiasm and attitude, how well you follow directions, and your aptitude specific to the program being shadowed. Skill level and knowledge of the specific career field are not as important as a positive attitude and a willingness to learn!
The process to shadow a CTC program has changed this year. To participate, THS students must:
*STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING UP ALL MISSED WORK.
Students will be issued a bus pass for the assigned date and time (AM/PM) to ride the bus to the CTC. Some programs take longer than others to assign shadow times due to the number of students interested in the program. There is chance it may take up to a few weeks to receive a shadowing date and time.
