From the Desk of the Principal
Term 1 is in the books, and report cards will be sent home shortly. As I have remarked to many students this week in classrooms and the halls, the slate is clean and it’s time to set goals for Term 2. When you take a look at your child’s final grades, either in HAC or when they receive the report card, take the time to not only applaud their hard work and question how they might have done better; but perhaps more importantly, talk with them about the goals that they are setting for the coming term. A student who receives a “C” should consider setting a “B” as a goal, since the final grade will follow the trend of the last grade, thus a “B” will appear on the all-important transcripts that goes to colleges and post-secondary schools. For some students, maintaining a high grade should be the goal – to not rest on your laurels and assume that less work will yield the same grade. If anything, Term 2 assignments tend to raise the bar on expectations and level of complexity.
Our school improvement goals have come into focus and I would like to take the next two weeks to share them with you. The first set of FCPS goals relate to school climate and culture. In shorthand, climate is the positive and negative experiences that contribute to our overall view of the school, as students, parents and staff. Culture becomes the values that we collectively hold and reinforce within the school and community. Three of our climate goals have measurements related to the perceptions of all three groups, and an additional three goals relate to health and wellness.
In a broad sense, we are working toward improving the positive aspects of our school, as well as those that are less than positive. This includes the perception of safety, classroom environment, the engagement of students and parents and the ways in which we communicate with you. We strive to make the Tuscarora experience worthwhile both inside and outside the classroom. We want our larger community to be aware of the variety and depth of great experiences and activities every day. Our goal is that you feel well-served and a part of our school.
Toward that end, I am always looking for parents who wish to serve as a member of our school improvement team. To offer candid feedback, perspective and to learn more about the strategies behind our goals and offer your own. If this is something you may be interested in, please contact me here at the school by phone (240) 236-6400 or via email Christopher.berry@fcps,org. Sincerely, Christopher Berry Principal

Attention: Students in grades 9-10
The FCPS Career and Technology Center (CTC) invites you to "shadow" a CTC program there.
A specialized FCPS high school, the CTC offers 25 career preparatory programs, most open to students in grades 10-12. Here's a link to programs offered:
https://education.fcps.org/ctc/programs.
Sign ups are opened for Shadowing appointments that will begin in November.
Students: A shadow experience provides an opportunity to experience a program of interest first-hand. You spend two class periods at the CTC in the program for which you might apply. You participate in classroom activities and are able to meet with and talk to the instructor and current students. The shadow experience is also a part of the CTC application process and acceptance criteria. Instructors evaluate students during the shadow experience on use of time, enthusiasm and attitude, how well you follow directions, and your aptitude specific to the program being shadowed. Skill level and knowledge of the specific career field are not as important as a positive attitude and a willingness to learn!
The process to shadow a CTC program has changed this year. To participate, THS students must:
*STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING UP ALL MISSED WORK.
Students will be issued a bus pass for the assigned date and time (AM/PM) to ride the bus to the CTC. Some programs take longer than others to assign shadow times due to the number of students interested in the program. There is chance it may take up to a few weeks to receive a shadowing date and time.
