News from Principal Christopher Berry
As we turn the calendar page to May, here are a few reminders for parents and students…
Please remember that FCPS has guidelines for dress that we ask all students to follow. While it is tempting with the warm weather to dress as comfortably as possible, it is not appropriate to wear clothing that is too revealing or shows undergarments. Crop-tops or bare midriffs are not appropriate for females, and boys should avoid pants or shorts that ride too low. School is a place of business, and we don’t want to be in the position of having to pull a student out of class because they are not dressed appropriately.
With the competion of the resurfacing and lane striping of Ballenger Creek Pike, it is important to be aware of what traffic and parking is legal and what is not. While it may be tempting or seem normal to park a car alongside the side of the school on Ballenger Creek Pike at the time of dismissal, this is actually illegal. Beginning at 2:00, cars are parking from the red light (in front of the school) southward to the other entrance to Tuscarora High School. At dismissal students are boarding venicles, some of which are then crossing one and half lanes of traffic, making a U-turn to head north on Ballenger Creek Pike. Over the course of the last few weeks there have been at least two near accidents with the buses that come out of THS and turn south on Ballenger Creek Pike. If you are picking up a student at dismissal, please come into one of the two school parking lots and observe traffic flow reminders. Pedestrian safety is the priority at arrival and dismissal.
Next week is national Teacher Appreciation Week. We are thankful that the PTSA is arranging a luncheon for our staff on Wednesday of next week as one way to honor the work of our teachers each and every day. Some parents will choose to send their students with gift cards or the like for special teachers. I have a suggestion that costs nothing more than a little time. If your child has been positively affected, mentored, pushed, inspired or saved in some way by a teacher or staff member over one or four years, take the time to write them a note. A thoughtful email or personal hand-written message means the world to a teacher. Providing them with specifics about how they have helped your son or daughter is really the best gift you can give. Consider this "gift" for a teacher or several teachers.

Counseling Office Updates
An opportunity for students who are 16 years old and older
If you are interested in serving as an election judge in the upcoming Gubernatorial Elections and are age 16 and above and a registered voter (in Maryland, you may register at age 16, but cannot vote unless you will be age 18 by the next general election), you may be able to help at a designated polling place in Frederick County. The dates of the election are Tuesday, June 26, 2018 and Tuesday, November 6, 2018. You will be paid at least $150 for working on Election Day, as well as an additional amount for attending a training session prior to the election. The training session will be no longer than 3 hours. You will be asked to assist in the set-up of the polling location, which will take place on Monday evening prior to Election Day, and you will be required to work on Election Day from 6:00 a.m. until approximately 9:00 p.m. Your contact information will be provided to the Chief Judges assigned to the same polling place, so that they can coordinate information regarding Monday set-up and even food arrangements for Election Day. You will not be permitted to leave the premises of the polling place while you are serving as an Election Judge.
Please stop by the Guidance Office for a parent permission form.

Shadowing will begin Wednesday, April 18th and run through Wednesday, May 30th. Please sign up with Mrs. Packan in the counseling office if you are interested.
Attention Seniors! The state of Maryland requires that seniors complete a “Senior Survey.” This survey will be completed during FLEX mid-May. In order to make this process easier for you, you will want to collect the following information, in advance:
Also, in your Naviance account, please indicate your acceptance status for each college in which you applied. This will help current Titans in understanding GPA/SAT/ACT acceptance rates. Your name will not be associated with the acceptance, waitlisted or denied. Lastly, please indicate which college you will be attending. This lets your counselor know where to send your final transcript.
