News from Principal Christopher Berry
Dear Tuscarora Families,
This has been a challenging week with the tragic school shooting news from Parkland, Florida. It is unsettling, and forces us to question how safe any of us are in our community and schools. In speaking with students and parents this week, it was important to reiterate what I know and believe – that the safety of everyone at Tuscarora is at the forefront of what we do every day. Our school building is safe, and we have daily conversations about how to make it more safe and focus on learning. Our staff and students are encouraged to report problems or situations which may seem out of the ordinary. We practice for many eventualities with drills that we want to be routine for our students – fire and weather drills, shelter in place and lockdown drills, building evacuation drills. The events of this week underscore the importance of these exercises. Within the next two weeks we will be having a shelter in place and lockdown drill, providing context to students about why we do them, and the importance of their safety. I appreciate when you have discussions with your students about the need to take these drills seriously and the importance in maintaining safety at Tuscarora. We want the focus to remain on teaching and learning. Please call on me if you have any questions about any of these issues that I have raised, or if you have questions of your own.
From,
Mr. Berry
