Message From The Principal's Desk
Dear Tuscarora Families,
The Third Term has come to a close, just one more remains for this academic year. And it has been a week where our Titan Pride has been on display for so many individuals in our community. In the Commendation and Kudos section below, you'll see a number of shout outs to deserving Titans. In particular, I am pleased to recognize Chloe Leonard, who was named a National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist. This is truly a rare honor, with just a handful of Seniors qualifying each year in Frederick County. Nationwide, less than one-tenth of one percent of seniors qualify, based on performance on the SAT. Chloe is an amazing senior scholar and deserving of this honor.
I also want to take the time to recognize Tuscarora's Assistant Principals at the conclusion of "National Assistant Principal Week" in the United States. The role of assistant principal in a high school is a complicated one, requiring a number of skills and answering to students, parents, teachers and the community. Tuscarora is extremely fortunate to have four talented individuals serving our community - Andrew McWilliams, Rob Nutter, Jody Ratti and Tanisha Smith. If they've every creatively assisted you, had an answer or gone the extra mile to resolve a complicated matter, you know just how dedicated they are to our students. I am in awe of what they accomplish every week.
April 5-9 is also "National Library Week"
We want to celebrate Titan Media Specialist Carrie Palmer for all she does for Tuscarora, not only in her job as media specialist but in other areas as Senior Class Advisor, and as one of the teacher leaders who has mentored and provided resources to teachers during this challenging year. She is another dedicated Titan whom we all depend on each day.
Finally, we look forward to welcoming back 120 new hybrid students next week into Cohorts A and B. It has been a long time coming for some of these Titans. It will be nice to see more student faces in the hallways!
Please take the time to read new information this week about Spring Athletics, PTSA need for volunteers, and upcoming Junior conferences. Spring has finally sprung!
With Titan Pride,
Christopher Berry, Principal

The Tuscarora PTSA Needs Your Assistance!
This year's Staff Appreciation week is May 3-7. In lieu of the usual food and luncheon events, the PTSA would like to present each staff member with a $10 gift card to buy coffee, donuts, or a sandwich on us. Presently, the PTSA budget for staff appreciation is not able to cover the total cost. Please help us in thanking the THS staff by contributing to this special event. You can use the link below to make a donation to Staff Appreciation Week and contribute any amount.

Thank you for your support of the PTSA and the THS Staff!
Titan Engineers Need Your Assistance!
The Engineering Design and Development class of Tuscarora High School is seeking your help as they gather market research for their final projects. For those unfamiliar, EDD is the capstone class for Tuscarora’s Project Lead the Way Engineering Academy. The fourteen members of the course are Tuscarora's first cohort to complete all five classes which makes them eligible for college engineering credits. In EDD, cohort members form teams in order to develop an engineered solution to a problem they select. Upon completion of the project, the students present their solutions to a patent-style review board for assessment.
Among the problems to solve that the students selected include:
1. More universal toothbrushes for those with Down's or Parkinson's.
2. A phone app to control window blinds
3. A more accurate means to read the fuel level in older vehicles (preferably through an app).
4. A better bookshelf organizer system
Here's where we need the Titan Community to help our burgeoning engineers. The design
teams have created market surveys for their products. The data from the surveys will be used by the teams to determine solution viability and also any changes to their criteria and constraints for the team’s solutions. The students would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to complete any or all their Google surveys. Thank you Titan Community!
Better Bookshelf Organizer Survey: I. McDaniel, M. Clune, C. Leonard
https://forms.gle/LAgy98L4NE1aaCSc8
Window Blind Phone App Survey: M. Helfand, K. Sanford, K. Anyomi
https://forms.gle/PhnfafX8cpkant239
More Universal Toothbrush Survey: T. Grosskopf, N. Rusu, E. Tumy
https://forms.gle/2uvuJucJykcLDHeA8
Advanced Fuel Tank Survey: K. Long, C. Biedrzycki, S. Dmuchowski
https://forms.gle/RTh4MFqvryKt2War9
In addition, if you have any expertise or interest in any of the student projects areas please reach out to eric.cullings@fcps.org. The students are in need of some professional guidance from materials engineers, app writers, designers, patent attorneys etc. Your time commitment at most would be pointing a team in the right direction or answering a question.

Athletes that registered for Spring Return to Play activities (in late Sept./early Oct.) do NOT need to register again. If an athlete has participated in a sport this year (RTP or in-season), we have their physical and COVID form on file at the school. Otherwise, we will need registration, a physical, and a COVID liability form, all found at www.tuscarorahighschool.rschoolteams.com or at www.fcps.org/athletics.
There will be a SPRING Parent Athletics Meeting on Wednesday, April 14 on Google Meet. The link to join is meet.google.com/hgu-patp-owu. Or you can dial is at 1-515-428-6146 (PIN: 615179422#). Each program Head Coach will have info for you about this year’s exciting Spring Season!
THS is excited to welcome MORE spectators to fall athletic competitions. Admittance to all outdoor athletic events is raising to THREE guests per student-athlete for OUTDOOR Home and Away contests. [reminder that for Volleyball, the number of guests is still limited to TWO per student-athlete]. Please make sure you have filled out the spectator form by midnight the night before your game/event (or on Thursday night for Saturday events) so we can get your names on the list.
In order to provide the safest environment for all to enjoy the athletic contests, face coverings must be properly worn (fully cover mouth and nose) and social distancing must be practiced at all times when on school grounds, inside and outside, and at all competitions held off FCPS campuses.
Admittance to athletic events will begin 30 minutes prior to the scheduled starting time, once all teams have been checked in. Outside food and beverages are prohibited, and concession sales will not be available.
Schools will continue to live stream as many athletic contests as possible on YouTube - search THSAthleticsFCPS, or THSAthleticsFCPS2 for one of our channels.
