Message From The Principal's Desk
Dear Tuscarora Families,
The 2nd Semester is fast approaching, and with it the changeover to new courses, and a fresh start for all Titan students. This week, we placed a hardcopy of each student's schedule, along with other important information about the coming semester in the mail. We recognize that the US Mail is not running quickly these days, but our desire is for this information to arrive prior to January 25. Please see the additional information below in "School News" to stay informed about how we will approach this new semester. We will have 1st Semester material collection on January 26 and 2nd Semester material distribution on February 3 - details to follow. Please take a look at the 2nd Semester schedule here which will begin on January 28, and begin to help your family make plans for these changes.
Six days remain in the current semester. Checking grades in Schoology, and meeting with your teachers during the afternoon student support time can make a tremendous difference in finishing strong.
Next Monday schools are closed, but more important than ever is the reason for this holiday. Dr. Martin Luther King inspired our nation like few Americans have. He, along with many committed followers, championed the causes of freedom and justice for Black Americans, charting a non-violent path of change for our nation. He stressed service to others and humility in his cause. He understood that freedom for one group meant freedom for all. Each year, FCPS chooses to celebrate one student in each of its high schools who exemplifies these traits of leadership, service and character. It is with great pride that we bring you James Richmond-Quinn as this year's THS MLK Honoree. If you know James, you understand how his commitment to others and selflessness make him a great choice. Read his story below in the "Kudos" section. In this time, we need these examples of what is right and positive in our world. And if you're able, watch the celebration on FCPS-TV tonight at 7:00pm.
I hope you are able to enjoy a long weekend with your family, and also celebrate the example of Dr. King and his legacy as we move ahead into 2021.
With Titan Pride,
Christopher Berry, Principal

Keeping You Informed - School News
IMPORANT: THS 2nd Semester Schedule and Information
Student schedules for the second semester were sent out for mailing on Wednesday of this week. Be on the lookout for this envelope, which will include your student's schedule, a letter with important grade-level information, and copy of the new daily schedule. That daily schedule (with first period starting at 7:30 AM daily) will be used for second semester whether we are in virtual or hybrid status.
Students’ cohort status is noted on their schedules in the “Team” field. CA = Cohort A. CB = Cohort B. Due to multiple factors, including social distancing requirements in classrooms, changes between cohorts are not permitted.
As indicated with the intent form sent out in December, changes between hybrid and virtual are permitted at end of term 3 only.
Schedule changes will be extremely limited due to the careful planning that went into making sure all social distancing requirements in classrooms are met.
After our letters were printed, there was a county-wide change in the date when students will have access to their second semester classes in Schoology. Students should be able to see those classes on Monday, January 25. Access codes for second semester Google Meets will be available in Schoology by the end of the day on Wednesday, January 27.
If you do not receive this mailing by Jan 25/26, please give us a call and we will provide you with schedule information.
We will send a separate FOF in the coming days with details about collecting semester one materials on Tuesday, January 26 and distributing semester two materials on Wednesday, February 3.

Gallery of the 2020 Fall Photography Competition
Hello Titan Nation, my name is Mr. Hartman. Normally you all know me as the yearbook guy, but today I am reaching out for a different reason. Each year, during both the fall and spring semester, I organize a photography competition for students in my digital photography classes. Students upload three of their best pieces to a judging site where their work is ranked (from one to five stars) by judges. The judges for our annual competition are former students of mine who are now working as professional digital artists in the fields of either photography or graphic design. This fall’s judges: Isabelle Bartolomeo, Kimberly Hockman, Caleb Spencer, and Erin Watson, have all earned my heartfelt gratitude for donating their time and their talent to this event. In normal years, I print, frame, and hang the work in our media center. This is obviously not a normal year. But, where there is change and challenge, there is also opportunity. With the support of Mr. Berry, I was able to rent a virtual gallery space so that this tradition could continue. The work my students have created under these incredibly difficult circumstances is an inspiration to me. If I were describe this show in one word it would be ‘resilience’. In the face of a challenge unlike any of us had ever faced, my students found their resolve, and in doing so, they found beauty. There were 155 submissions for this fall’s competition, the 45 highest ranked pieces earned a spot on the wall of our virtual gallery. It has been a difficult week/ month/ year. My sincere hope is that this display can bring just a tiny measure of hope, appreciation, and maybe even joy to our Titan community. Without further ado, I present to you the winners of the 2020 Fall Photography Competition. Congratulations to the winners! But to all my photography students I wish to say thank you, it has been my honor and privilege to work with you all this fall.

Attention Students and Parents!
The THS yearbook needs your help! Thank you to all the parents and students who have responded to our requests for pictures and stories to include in this year's book! But, the year keeps going and we have a lot of pages to fill, so we are going to have to continue to respectfully ask that you consider getting involved and help us to tell YOUR story this year.
Please take a moment to look at the Link Tree account we have set up for the yearbook topics this year. We are updating topics each week and the links on our link tree open up google forms that you can use to send us pictures (cell phone pics are fine) and maybe a brief write-up about the pics you submit.
Thank you from Mr. Hartman and the Remember the Titans Yearbook Staff.

THS Announces the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award Recipient: Each year Frederick County Public Schools celebrates the leadership qualities of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by hosting a winter celebration. A representative from each school is chosen to represent the student body and must possess and demonstrate leadership characteristics both in and out of the classroom. This year Tuscarora is pleased to announce 12th grader James Richmond-Quinn as our Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award recipient.
James has an amicable and humble demeanor. He is viewed as a role model by youth for the way that he carries himself, along with his giving spirit. He has committed extensive time for several years volunteering for a youth basketball league, providing food to families during this Pandemic as well as clothing for the homeless. James takes on these responsibilities with a strong sense of pride, coupled with the knowledge that he is able to give back to his community. He has shown a willingness to make the necessary sacrifices to ensure his own success, but just as importantly, has shown that same determination and will to assist others.
We are extremely proud of James and know that he will represent Tuscarora High School well as the recipient of this award. This year's Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration is scheduled as a virtual event that will be airing on FCPS Cable 18 and YouTube Channel on Thursday, January 7, 2021.
Please join me in congratulating James for this great honor!
Ki Named to All-State Senior Orchestra
Congratulations goes to Titan Junior, Irene Ki, who was recently named to the Maryland All-State Senior Orchestra. Irene plays the violin, and was one of only two Frederick County Public School students, and the only junior, named for this prestigious honor. Irene plays in the Tuscarora Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Hogan. Way to go, Irene… you’ve made our entire school Titan proud!
Two Tuscarora High School Teachers Named as Vanguard Teachers
This week, two Titan Teachers were notified that they had been chosen to serve as Frederick County Public School Vanguard Teachers. Ms. Sarah Biddle and Dr. Lindsey Beck were among a select number of FCPS educations who have been chosen to participate in a professional learning process in order to better collaborate with and lead other teachers at Tuscarora High School. Ms. Biddle is a veteran English teacher and Dr. Beck teaches in the mathematics department. We are proud and honored to have these two Titans join the other Vanguard teachers at THS. Congratulations!
Titan Students of the Week
Each week, Tuscarora High School will honor two students of the week, chosen from the many student who were nominated by their teachers. One will recognize strong Titan character and work ethic, and the other will recognize strong scholarship. Here are this week's winners:
Titan Outstanding Scholar of the Week: Eric M. Anderson, nominated by Ms. Dye.
"Eric is such a conscientious student! He is committed to excellence in everything he does. He always wants to find ways to improve his performance. He actively participates in class and is a strong self advocate. On top of that, he is kind, compassionate, and a good friend to others."
Titan Outstanding Character of the Week: Christian Joel Oliveros, nominated by Ms. Pyle.
"Christian has upped his game this term and has turned in some pretty stellar work. He has a business mind that serves him well as he progresses through the class."

Athletic Update
Titans, I wish I had more "concrete" information to pass along, however such is not currently the case. This is a hard time, but we stay encouraged and hopeful. Please remember to follow us on Twitter (@THSTitans) for the most up to date info. As an update:
A quick reminder of dates, as they currently stand:
Fall sports - February 13, 2021 to April 17, 2021
Spring sports - April 17, 2021 to June 19, 2021
Our Athletic Trainer (megan.little@fcps.org) is going to be making herself available for virtual "office hours" for our student-athletes. This can be for injury discussion or follow-up, nutrition talks, stretching routines, or just to "hang out" and say "hello."
More info on this will be advertised on Twitter and from your coaches in the near future.
COVID-19 Return to Play Form: That's right, a new form is coming down the pike.
Any student-athlete that has been diagnosed with COVID-19 at any time MUST get this form filled out by a doctor to allow for return to play.
New MPSSAA RTP COVID-19 Infection Medical Clearance Form Winter Sports:
At this time, all in-person winter athletic activities are suspended indefinitely.
FCPS' goal is still to provide our winter student-athletes and coaches with a competitive season if at all possible, even a short season.
Fall Sports: At this time, all in person athletic activities are suspended indefinitely, but FCPS continues to prepare for fall sports to begin on Saturday, February 13.
That is all for now. I will be in touch as soon as we learn more. Titans, we miss you! Stay Encouraged!
