News from the Principal's Desk
Dear Tuscarora Families,
It is a season of gratitude with Thanksgiving next week. One might argue that in the midst of a pandemic, the challenges and tribulations seem to overwhelm the aspects of our lives for which we give thanks. I would argue just the opposite. COVID-19 has brought into focus for me the myriad of ways that the Tuscarora students, staff and wider community are working for each other, to lift each other up. If you happened to drive by our parking lot yesterday, you say this clearly in Action. Tuscarora students and staff, under the direction of the I Believe in Me Foundation and its founder Aje Hill helped to distribute food to nearly 250 families. The cars were lined up an hour in advance of this process, and nearly 40 student, THS staff and community members safely worked to unbox, distribute and encourage these families as they made their way through. 200 large turkeys were given away. The Frederick Literacy Foundation distributed new books for children, The Frederick County Health Department conducted free COVID screenings and providing free flu shots. The need is strong in our community, and what this small but mighty group demonstrated is that ours is NOT a community of divisiveness or “me first”. It was proof positive that for the Tuscarora, “We’re in This Together” is not just a slogan. I was a very proud Titan principal yesterday.
Likewise, it has been gratifying to see students and staff persevering day after day in their learning, despite the isolation that they face. It puts a smile on my face when students laugh with one another in a virtual class. I’m loving when students are coming into our building in safe, small groups – working on labs, getting help, performing show choir or dance moves, working out and playing the sports games they love. I cannot thank the teachers and staff enough who fight the uphill battle every day of making learning relevant and engaging, who are succeeding. And when they don’t, they go back to the drawing board. It is not perfect; some days learning is not even effective. But the effort, the patience, and the persistence continues on both ends of the computer.
Thank you to the parents that have been on the other end of the phone or an email when we’re attempting to communicate with you. We pledge to continue to meet you wherever your student and family are. Report cards were mailed home yesterday. If there are questions or concerns that you would like to discuss, a great starting point is your child’s teachers and counselors. Send a note through Schoology or email and expect a response within 1-2 school days at the most.
With the holiday next week, we will not publish a Weekly Newsletter. I hope that everyone a safe and healthy break, even if it is a little smaller than normal. I am always grateful for the opportunity to serve the Tuscarora High School community as your principal. It is energizing to me to work with this group of students, staff and parents, recognizing that there is always work to be done. May you find gratitude with your friends and family, near and far.
Christopher Berry, Principal

Check Out These THS Musical Performances
Among the many aspects we miss of attending school in person is the joy and skill of musical performances from Tuscarora students. The THS Performing Arts Program is beginning the process of rolling out recorded performances for all to enjoy, especially at this time of year. The links below are our Term 1 performances for 9th Grade Orchestra and the Mighty Titan Marching Band. The students have work incredibly hard on these productions, especially learning about the recording process and doing a good bit of the preparation virtually. Give them a look and listen!

Attention Students and Parents!
The THS yearbook needs your help! Thank you to all the parents and students who have responded to our requests for pictures and stories to include in this year's book! But, the year keeps going and we have a lot of pages to fill, so we are going to have to continue to respectfully ask that you consider getting involved and help us to tell YOUR story this year.
Please take a moment to look at the Link Tree account we have set up for the yearbook topics this year. We are updating topics each week and the links on our link tree open up google forms that you can use to send us pictures (cell phone pics are fine) and maybe a brief write up about the pics you submit.
Thank you from Mr. Hartman and the Remember the Titans Yearbook Staff

Remember the Titans - A Special Message for 9th Grade Students and Families
The Remember the Titans Yearbook staff wanted to reach out specifically to our 9th grade class. We are plugging away at building our yearbook with a lot of help from our students and staff who are sending us great photos and other sorts of yearbook content every week. Much of this content is coming in from Juniors and Seniors.
We want to represent every grade in our annual publication equally, but it is always important for us, as a yearbook staff, to make sure our ninth graders are featured in our book. This first year of high school is unlike anything any of us have ever experienced and we want to make sure we tell the story of this freshman class. Please consider getting involved and help us to tell your story. The link below takes you to our ‘linktree’ account where we have links to a long list of google forms that you can use to answer questions and upload pictures (cell phone pictures are more than ok).
Some of the forms don’t really apply to our underclassmen (unless a 9th grader has a car?) but there are a lot of general topics that apply to all grades (home work space, mask fashion, crazy quarantine stories, etc). So, please take a moment to look over our topics (we update topics weekly), and show us who this freshman class is!
If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Hartman directly at: Richard.hartman@fcps.org

Congratulations to Gabrielle Tringali, THS Senior, for being chosen as student of the month at CTC. Here is what Mr. Michael Concepcion, CTC Principal, has to say about Gabrielle: "As you are aware, society needs skilled and energetic young people. Gabrielle has certainly made the grade. I know that if she continues to apply herself as she has obviously done at the Career and Technology Center, she will have a very bright future."

Athletic Boosters - Our Titans Need your Help and Support!
FCPS Athletics is a MD State Leader! We are one of the ONLY local counties to have any sort of athletics occurring right now! The student athletes are having a blast, seeing their teammates, connecting with their coaches and staying safe! However, there are no competitions, and therefore, no athletic budget (which comes solely from gate receipts). The state is now looking at the possibilities of incorporating three shortened seasons in the spring, and there is a lot of work to be done to prepare and plan for such a non-traditional plan for interscholastic athletics. Please consider joining us to be a part of the solution. Our teams, our coaches, and most importantly, your students NEED our support and positivity now and this upcoming year. The loss of a traditional fall and winter ticket gate means the serious loss of all athletic funding. Come help us determine how we can/will be able to support ALL athletic teams moving forward.
BE A PART OF THE 2020-21 THS ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB!
As we prepare for whatever HS Athletics will look like during the upcoming year, the THS Athletic Boosters wants your input, welcomes your ideas, and needs your support. With the uncertainty of the upcoming year and the current financial conditions, this is the best possible way to help support the student athletes at Tuscarora. Each and every program is going to need our help navigating this year.
