News from the Principal's Desk
Dear Tuscarora Families,
This was a terrific week, if for no other reason than we had 270 students in the building taking the PSAT on Wednesday. I was pleased with both the great care our staff took to keep these students safe and how cooperative the students were. It was clear by the expressions on their face that they were both pleased and a little nervous coming back into the building, many for the first time in months. The testing went very smoothly - students adhered to social distancing and mask protocols within the building. And we also took some notes on a few upgrades, as we will do this all over again at the end of the month for seniors who will be taking the SAT, most for the first time, since testing locations have been shut down for the past seven months. We have room for a few more seniors if you have not registered. Information below. Mostly, it was good to see the faces of so many Titans this week.
I speaking with a parent this week about how to improve their child's performance, they suggested that they were going to pay for a tutor in the evenings to assist with two specific courses. The parent seemed genuinely surprised when I offered that we have Tuscarora teachers available live every afternoon and evening up until 7:30/8:00. Many students have discovered this "secret" resource. When they get stuck, a roster of teachers in many different subjects is available on Google Meet, for FREE. And knowing many of these Titan teachers, I can tell you that they are well versed in not only their own content areas, but many others to boot. There really is not any reason why a Tuscarora student can't get the help they need one-on-one for over 12 hours every single school day. Check out the schedule below in the news section with live links that take students directly to the teacher via a Google Meet at the indicated time. Teachers are literally standing by ready to help!
I hope you are enjoying this extended fall weekend. Get outside if you are able, Titans!

Keeping You Informed - School News
Important Yearbook Information
From Mr. Hartman, Yearbook Advisor:
A number of folks have asked for some clarification about the yearbook so I wanted to follow up and give you a little more insight into what we are doing and, more importantly, how you can help. The first question I want to answer is about school pictures and their inclusion in the book this year. The answer is yes, school pictures will be in the book. Seniors are already being photographed and underclass portraits are scheduled for February 4 and 5 with a make up day in mid-March.
The second question I would like to address is, what exactly we are making a yearbook about. This is a fair question. My staff and I have decided to do a chronological yearbook this year. We are going to literally tell the story of this year from month to month all the way until early May. My job, as the yearbook adviser, every year, is to make a book that tells the story of the year and is worth the money spent on it. This year is no different in that respect, but to do it right and to do it well, we are going to need some community buy in.
In other words, we need help from students, from teachers and from parents. My staff and I have been working on getting some exciting things set up to make it as easy as possible for students and parents to participate in our publication this year. We are using a central site to easily link you to all of our google forms:
https://linktr.ee/THStitanyearbook
There are two options for parents, if you have a gmail account use the link for those. If you don’t have a gmail account, use the link for ‘non gmail accounts’. Each week we will be posting new google forms asking for new pictures and different themes, so stay tuned and get involved. If you have any ideas or suggestions, we’d love to hear those as well. This is going to be a community effort this year and we encourage any and all participation and/or suggestions. This week we are starting off with:
First Day of School pictures
and
Titan Essential Workers
As always, if you have any questions please contact Mr. Hartman at:

Staff Members of The Month
Congratulations to the September Staff Members of the Month, Mrs. Fogle and Mrs. Engelstatter!
Mrs. Fogle is a Special Education teacher who has been teaching most of her life, from age 16 on. This is her fourth year at Tuscarora High and there is nothing else she'd rather be doing. "I love Tuscarora and our Titan community," she shared.
Mrs. Engelstatter started teaching at Frederick High in 2006, where she taught English for 8 years. She then received her School Library Media degree from UMD and transferred to GTJHS for a year, then to Clarksville Middle and Mount Hebron HS in Howard County where she was a media specialist for 5 years. The 60 minute commute became too much, so this year she came back to FCPS to teach English again!
The Tuscarora community is pleased to have both educators involved in the school. Thank you ladies for your impact and efforts at THS.

THS Parents - Important Grade Level Schoology Groups are Here!
The THS Counseling department has set up an information hub/group in Schoology for each grade level. It is titled "THS Counseling - Class of 2022, Class of 2023, Class of 2024" respectively. Information and resources particular and helpful to each grade level will be shared throughout the school year. Since students and parents are already using Schoology for courses and to check grades, we figured it would be best to keep all THS information in one location instead of getting notifications from multiple sources. Students have already been added as members to their specific class group. Parents, if you would like to join the group for your student or students, please follow these directions and use the access code provided:
1. Click "Groups" at the top of Schoology 2. Select "My Groups" 3. Click "Join Group" on the right 4. Enter the Group Access Code

October OPEN Booster Club Membership Meeting
As we prepare for 3 athletic seasons in the spring, the THS Athletic Boosters wants your input, welcomes your ideas, and needs your support. With the uncertainty of the upcoming seasons, this is the best possible way to help support the student athletes at Tuscarora. Each and every program is going to need our help navigating this year.
THS Athletic Boosters will hold their October OPEN Membership Meeting via Google Meet on Monday, Oct 12 at 6:30 PM. Please email thsathleticboosters1@gmail.com to receive a link for the Google Meet. It will be helpful to be signed in to a google or gmail account when joining the meeting. JOIN US! We will discuss social media, fundraising, and how we have moved forward with a plan for our NEW CONCESSION STAND.
If you have questions, please feel free to contact the booster President Tracy Hilliard (tracy.hilliard@fcps.org) or Athletic Director Howard Putterman.
Come be a part of our "re-boot" and help to "re-energize" our efforts to support All Student Athletes, All Programs, and the entire Tuscarora Community!
Athletic Boosters - Our Titans Need your Help and Support!
FCPS Athletics is a MD State Leader! We are one of the ONLY local counties to have any sort of athletics occurring right now! The student athletes are having a blast, seeing their teammates, connecting with their coaches and staying safe! However, there are no competitions, and therefore, no athletic budget (which comes solely from gate receipts). The state is now looking at the possibilities of incorporating three shortened seasons in the spring, and there is a lot of work to be done to prepare and plan for such a non-traditional plan for interscholastic athletics. Please consider joining us to be a part of the solution. Our teams, our coaches, and most importantly, your students NEED our support and positivity now and this upcoming year. The loss of a traditional fall and winter ticket gate means the serious loss of all athletic funding. Come help us determine how we can/will be able to support ALL athletic teams moving forward.
BE A PART OF THE 2020-21 THS ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB!
As we prepare for whatever HS Athletics will look like during the upcoming year, the THS Athletic Boosters wants your input, welcomes your ideas, and needs your support. With the uncertainty of the upcoming year and the current financial conditions, this is the best possible way to help support the student athletes at Tuscarora. Each and every program is going to need our help navigating this year.
