News from the Principal's Desk
Dear Tuscarora Families,
Today marks the mid-term point of this marking period. Yesterday, we sent hard copy interim progress reports via the US Mail only to families of students who currently have a "D" or "F" . As always, please reach out to your student's teacher or counselor should you need additional information, clarification or tips on how to best improve your child's performance. Click Here for Our Staff Directory.
So what should we as parents do when your child's grades are not positive? It’s important to remember that students also get “stuck”, just like parents. A grade is not where they want it to be, and they’re not sure what to do next to make a difference. The first and most important step you take is to check your child’s Schoology account, and have an informed conversation with data in hand. What assignments are missing? Were all assignments turned in on time? Is there a pattern in types of assignments? Have your student talk you through this from their perspective. Work to listen to how they see it. Ask calm, open ended questions. But ultimately, get to the solution part of the discussion. High school students understand more than we sometimes give them credit about the path forward. Encouraging them to be their own best advocate and speaking with their teacher about what they can do proactively. Have them make the plan, and set up how you're going to check in with them. The end of the conversation should only be the beginning.
If there is a positive aspect to virtual learning, it is that Titan Teachers are available EVERY DAY for individualized one-on-one assistance. Check Schoology - every teacher has posted on their course page when and where (the url link) they are available during Student Support (Green) Time.
I want to congratulate a group of seniors who have demonstrated the highest levels of scholarship. Zachary Leonard was named a National Merit Semi-Finalist, one of 16,000 students among 2.8 million seniors in the United States recognized for this honor. For those doing the math, that's less than 1% of seniors. Way to go Zach! Likewise, also near the top are Jarom Moody, Jacob Rudland and Lucy Xie, recognized as Commended Scholars in this process. The recognition is based on their Fall 2019 PSAT score. Way to go, Titan Scholars!
And while we speaking PSAT, I am also pleased to say that we'll be administering the 2020 version of this college assessment to 275 students next week here at THS. Watch Find Out First for final reminders on preparation and safety.
Please check plenty of new news this week, and have a great weekend,
Christopher Berry, Principal

Titan Athletic Updates
The Athletic Department would like to offer a brief update after Wednesday's Board of Education meeting to let you know that FCPS will be continuing with the MPSSAA's Two-Semester Plan for Interscholastic Athletics. This means that we will NOT be participating in competitive sports during the fall. We are aware that this is very disappointing for many stakeholders in our community, including coaches. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Athletic Director. The THS coaching staff, student-athletes and community have been fantastic about staying positive, encouraged, and active during this uncertain time. Thank you!
Additionally, the BOE approved the following RTP committee recommendations:
We will continue our current voluntary 1st semester practice seasons as scheduled. We are currently in our "spring" season, and will begin winter on Monday, October 26 - more info late next week on Winter plans
Explore the potential of a modified two-semester plan that may include earlier starting dates, longer seasons (with no overlap) and reasonably aligns with the return of students to the classroom should that option become available to local school systems.
Develop plans that would allow some winter RTP to be conducted inside.
Explore and possibly develop plans to allow small group weight room usage beginning in December.
Please read through the following highlights and make sure to read the full document at: Voluntary 1st Semester Conditioning and Skill-Based Coaching Seasons - this new document has links to all 3 required forms for every participant. (listed below as well)
Contact your team/program's Head Coach for more specific info and schedules as they are finalized later this week.
All participants MUST turn in a new FCPS Sport's Physical dated after 4/01/2020. Page 2 (History Form) AND page 3 (Physical Exam with Doctor's signature) MUST both be submitted to the head coach (no more electronic submissions!)
If you participated in a fall season - we have your physical, you simply NEED to let your coach know what sport!
All participants MUST do Online Registration BEFORE the first day (Spring athletes, please register by 9/25 at the latest - so coaches can plan PODS). If you registered for fall, you must login to your account and start a NEW registration. Do NOT create a new account if you are a returning student/parent!
All participants MUST also print and submit the FCPS COVID-19 Parent-Student-Athlete Participation Acknowledgement Statement form
again, we have these forms from fall athletes - simply let your coach know so s/he can get it from us.
No Athletic Fees will be charged or collected for Semester 1.
No Tryouts will occur - workouts are open to all students, however space MAY be limited!
For more information, contact your Head Coach or the Athletic Director, Coach Putterman

THS Parents - Important Grade Level Schoology Groups are Here!
The THS Counseling department has set up an information hub/group in Schoology for each grade level. It is titled "THS Counseling - Class of 2022, Class of 2023, Class of 2024" respectively. Information and resources particular and helpful to each grade level will be shared throughout the school year. Since students and parents are already using Schoology for courses and to check grades, we figured it would be best to keep all THS information in one location instead of getting notifications from multiple sources. Students have already been added as members to their specific class group. Parents, if you would like to join the group for your student or students, please follow these directions and use the access code provided:
1. Click "Groups" at the top of Schoology. 2. Select "My Groups". 3. Click "Join Group" on the right. 4. Enter the Group Access Code.
Access Codes: Class of 2021 VC9G-B59K-F4N3T

5. Click "Join".
The Counseling department looks forward to sharing important information with you and working with you throughout the school year!

October OPEN Booster Club Membership Meeting
As we prepare for 3 athletic seasons in the spring, the THS Athletic Boosters wants your input, welcomes your ideas, and needs your support. With the uncertainty of the upcoming seasons, this is the best possible way to help support the student athletes at Tuscarora. Each and every program is going to need our help navigating this year.
THS Athletic Boosters will hold their October OPEN Membership Meeting via Google Meet on Monday, Oct 12 at 6:30 PM. Please email thsathleticboosters1@gmail.com to receive a link for the Google Meet. It will be helpful to be signed in to a google or gmail account when joining the meeting. JOIN US! We will discuss social media, fundraising, and how we have moved forward with a plan for our NEW CONCESSION STAND.
If you have questions, please feel free to contact the booster President Tracy Hilliard (tracy.hilliard@fcps.org) or Athletic Director Howard Putterman.
Come be a part of our "re-boot" and help to "re-energize" our efforts to support All Student Athletes, All Programs, and the entire Tuscarora Community!
Athletic Boosters - Our Titans Need your Help and Support!
FCPS Athletics is a MD State Leader! We are one of the ONLY local counties to have any sort of athletics occurring right now! The student athletes are having a blast, seeing their teammates, connecting with their coaches and staying safe! However, there are no competitions, and therefore, no athletic budget (which comes solely from gate receipts). The state is now looking at the possibilities of incorporating three shortened seasons in the spring, and there is a lot of work to be done to prepare and plan for such a non-traditional plan for interscholastic athletics. Please consider joining us to be a part of the solution. Our teams, our coaches, and most importantly, your students NEED our support and positivity now and this upcoming year. The loss of a traditional fall and winter ticket gate means the serious loss of all athletic funding. Come help us determine how we can/will be able to support ALL athletic teams moving forward.
BE A PART OF THE 2020-21 THS ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB!
As we prepare for whatever HS Athletics will look like during the upcoming year, the THS Athletic Boosters wants your input, welcomes your ideas, and needs your support. With the uncertainty of the upcoming year and the current financial conditions, this is the best possible way to help support the student athletes at Tuscarora. Each and every program is going to need our help navigating this year.
