News from the Principal's Desk
Dear Tuscarora Families,
Today is the last day of assignments and classes for the Tuscarora Senior Class of 2020. It's a day for them to celebrate. Yesterday, it was incredibly nice to see so many of our soon-to-be graduates and their families as we distributed caps and gowns, if even from a distance. For me, the chance to congratulate these students face-to-face was priceless. Our celebration of the Class of 2020 will continue next week with another video tribute, and the cap and gown photo opportunity in the auditorium. In addition, as mentioned during yesterday's distribution, we will be collecting school materials from seniors only next week, as well. Watch for two very important Find Out First Messages in the today or tomorrow outlining the process to return materials. They will be detailed and specific.
Once again, I want to commend all of the students who persevered and took AP exams this week. One senior told me that he was happy to be finished, but also glad that he stuck it out and took the exam. In his words, "It was all worth it to know what I accomplished." Thank you again, AP Teachers. These students and their teachers accomplished more than they ever planned or imagined.
Once we have information as to the final day of school (still pending) we will make a determination as to collection of school material from underclass students. Once very positive development in this area - FCPS has said that underclass students may keep their chromebooks over the summer, and do not need to return them right now. Stay tuned.
Many of us are ready for a long weekend. Especially at this challenging time, it's also important to not allow the message of Memorial Day to become lost in these challenges. Isaac Patterson is a member of the Tuscarora High School staff. He is an instructional assistant who works diligently with students, and also has a good deal of accumulated wisdom to share with them. Isaac is also a Vietnam Veteran. Earlier this year, he was honored by FCPS as part of it's recognition of veterans who serve our students. Mr. Patterson had planned a more extensive week long recognition of Memorial Day for this year. This may have to wait, but he prepared a virtual commemoration for the THS staff. It is well worth taking a few minutes to watch. Memorial Day Presentation

Safe and Sane Cancellation
It's with great regret that the THS Class of 2020 Safe and Sane All-Night Graduation Party will not take place this year. After nearly nine months of planning, each and every member of the parent planning committee was working hard to find a way to give our graduates a fantastic all-night celebration. The Planning Committee talked and discussed many different scenarios, but simply couldn't find a safe (within the social restrictions and precautionary guidelines) option to gather the students for this event.
However, we hope to be celebrating the THS Class of 2020 graduates at a later date. The parent party planning committee is still working out the details.
Our seniors have missed out on so many milestones this spring: prom, awards nights, spring performances and concerts, spring sports and activities, and much more. We certainly can't make up for them missing these special experiences, but we are hoping each graduate will know they have an entire community who wishes them the best for their future and wants to celebrate their THS achievements and graduation.
If you have registered your student for the Safe and Sane party, you will be contacted about receiving a refund. If you wish to donate your registration fees to the future event funds, you may indicate this when contacted.
Thank you for your support of the Class of 2020!!
2020 SUMMER SESSION LEARNING--HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT The FCPS Frederick County Virtual School (FCVS) oversees virtual courses for high school credit. Course offerings are restricted to a modified Partially Online Summer Session (POSS) Model due to COVID-19 social distancing precautions. POSS is designed for FCPS high school students who are independent, self-motivated learners. POSS offers honors and elective courses for grade improvement or original credit. Students must be currently enrolled and entering 9th-12th grade with consistent access to a computer device and high-speed internet. There will be no face-to-face sessions this summer. Students will need to work independently 20-25 hours/week and participate in video conferencing sessions as required by the teacher.
Find details and registration materials at https://education.fcps.org/fcvs/ by selecting "Summer Session Learning Options. "See "High School" or "Middle School" (based on your current level) to access the correct packet. Deadline: Completed forms must reach your school counselor via email before 3 PM, Thursday, June 11. Do not delay! Enrollment is limited.
The Online Yearbook is at Your Fingertips!
Want to see your 2020 Remember the Titans Yearbook? Well, the bad news is we still don’t have our physical copies due to the coronavirus. But, if you purchased a yearbook, we have great news for you: the 2020 Remember the Titans yearbook is now available as an app for your phone and/or tablet! Simply go to your app store and search: Plus One Digital Yearbook Herff Jones and download the app.
Instructions for logging in:
The app will allow you to download the online yearbook preview on up to five devices, so technically you could share the book with a friend who has yet to purchase a book! As soon as we have information concerning distribution of the printed books we will communicate that information to you. We anticipate a mid-June delivery of the physical books. Until then, take a look at your 2020 Remember the Titans yearbook!
If you have questions or if the app is not working please contact Mr. Hartman at richard.hartman@fcps.org. Happy Yearbooking, Titans!

Technology Support During Distance Learning
Mrs. Bush is the user support specialist (tech person) for THS. She is available to help teachers and students who have any issues using their devices as we adjust to learning from home over the next month or so. She will also assist students who are still in need of a Chromebook, Hot Spot or replacement equipment such as a charger. Although it may take a few days to secure an item for you, she is here to provide the best service possible.
Students with issues with the technology, please send an email to marie.bush@fcps.org or call her at 240-236-6640 between 7:00 am -2:00 pm Monday - Friday. Please leave a message with the student name and the issue you're having. She will work to address all issues in the order they are received. Once she has received a request and has returned your call or email she will arrange times for pick-up or drop-off of equipment. At this time all pick-up and drop-offs will occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm at THS. Prior to pick-up or drop-off you will receive final confirmation from Mrs. Bush.
Parent Help with Schoology
Most of our teachers at Tuscarora are using Schoology as our primary means of delivering information and activities as well as checking on students progress during the next four weeks of distance learning. If you have not already, we encourage all parents to join Schoology and connect to their child's Schoology accounts.
Here is the PDF of the sign-up guide for parents:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Go7GoCc2iWUhtfQ45141LpVpbouxaclF/view
Here are five short Schoology training videos for parents made by FCPS:

Your child's teachers are able to provide you with your student's unique Schoology access code. All students are already able to log in and use Schoology. This code will allow parents to connect to their student's accounts.
If you are having trouble or have questions regarding Schoology, please email Ms. Jorgensen at Judith.Jorgensen@fcps.org

Senior Awards Ceremony
Since there will be no face-to-face senior awards ceremony, there will be a virtual senior awards ceremony. This video will be released in June, just prior to our virtual graduation in a YouTube format. Parents of students who are receiving awards will receive an email prior to the release of the awards ceremony video. The email will not say what award is being received.
School Decorating and Celebration Senior Banner
If you haven’t driven by the school in a few days, we’ve decorated many of the large exterior windows in honor of the Class of 2020. In addition, we are now proudly displaying a large banner in front of the school on the Ballenger Creek side.Once you receive your cap and gown, feel free to come by and take a picture next to this celebratory banner, courtesy of the administration and staff of Tuscarora High School.
Class of 2020 Posters
If you did not receive your special color 11x17 Tuscarora Titan poster honoring the class of 2020, please contact Robin Hemp at robin.hemp@fcps.org We will work with you to arrange a pick up date at a later date.
Photo Opportunity on the Tuscarora Titan Auditorium Stage in Your Cap and Gown
See below for details of how we are inviting you, in a safe manner, to come to the Tuscarora High School auditorium with a maximum of four of your family members to have a photo opportunity in your cap and gown and receive your diploma cover (without the actual diploma - that will come later). The Tuscarora Administrative Staff will also take a photo and feature these cap and gown pictures in a montage at the end of the virtual graduation ceremony. This is an OPTIONAL activity. With COVID-19, we recognize that all families will not feel comfortable with the close proximity of this event. Cap and gown photos that graduates or family members take on their own at a location of their choosing may be submitted separately and will also be featured in the photo montage at the conclusion of the Tuscarora Virtual Graduation Ceremony.
Tuscarora Class of 2020 Senior Tribute Video
How have you and your classmates grown over the years? What was it like when you were young and silly, and what image captures you and your friends today? Video will be released in early June.
As we approach the end of the year, culminating with the graduation ceremony, below are important dates, deadlines, and links for all seniors. Please read each of these items below, and it is worth printing as a reminder.

Graduation Gown Pick-Up - Tuscarora High School
If a family was unable to pick-up these items please contact Robin Hemp at robin.hemp@fcps.org. We will work with you to arrange a pick up or delivery to your home at a later date.
Last Day for The Class of 2020
Before the end of this day, you need to have completed:
Opt-in Grade Information - if you wish to have a traditional grade for you classes, you have to have indicated this to your teacher in the google form that each teacher provided. The default grade on the transcript will be pass/incomplete, unless you opt-in for a traditional letter grade.
Senior Survey - It’s in Naviance and asks questions such as your Post-Secondary plans (college, military, work, etc.) It also asks a question about scholarship money. The question is asking what is the TOTAL scholarship amount you have been offered, regardless of whether you accepted the scholarship money or not. Please provide feedback to the counselors on how we can improve our program and what has gone well with it.
Update Naviance - 1. Please indicate where you have been accepted, denied, and/or waitlisted. Why? Without others knowing your name, you will help your THS underclassmen in knowing statistics for being accepted into certain colleges.
2. Please indicate the college you are choosing to attend. Why? Counselors need to know where to send your final transcript. Without your final transcript, colleges can rescind their offer of acceptance or rescind their offer for a scholarship.
Go into your Naviance account, click on "Colleges I'm Applying To" and you will find the places to do these 2 items.

Juniors and Seniors! Common Black College Application
Check out the Common Black College Application at https://commonblackcollegeapp.com. This is a website where JUNIORS and Seniors can apply to all 55 HBCU colleges with 1 application, 1 test score and your transcript for $30. This is a temporary price cut to help students during this difficult time. Yes, Juniors, too (but be sure to enter the correct enrollment date of Fall 2021)!!
Seniors Attending Higher Education
With all of the things you now need to contend with, we need to ask you to please take a couple steps in your Naviance account.
#1 Please indicate where you have been accepted, denied, and/or waitlisted. Why? Without others knowing your name, you will help your THS underclassmen in knowing statistics for being accepted into certain colleges. It helps them to determine if they should make the effort to apply to a certain school.
#2 Please indicate the college you are choosing to attend. Why? As counselors, we need to know where to send your final transcript. Without your final transcript, colleges can rescind their offer of acceptance or rescind their offer for a scholarship.
Please take care and let your counselor know if you have any questions!
Senior Counseling Updates
SCHOLARSHIPS: Continue to monitor scholarships on Naviance. Updated deadlines are being added as they are received.
NEED A TRANSCRIPT? Please request via Naviance or contact your counselor directly. If you are applying for a scholarship that is requesting an official transcript, you should let your counselor know. The counselor can email your transcript directly to the scholarship committee. If you need an unofficial transcript, let your counselor know. The counselor will email a copy of your transcript to you, directly.
NEED A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION? Please contact your counselor and/or teacher directly. Please note, most students have "waived" their rights to seeing the counselor and teacher letters. Because of this, counselors and teachers are obligated to send the letters directly to the scholarship committee, instead of the student. Students should share the scholarship committee's email address with the counselor and teacher, and the counselor and teacher will send the letter(s) directly.
A Message From the THS Counseling Department
We hope this message finds you and your family safe and healthy. The THS Counselors recognize that students may need assistance during this time. If you need assistance from your counselor, please contact us! Counselors will be available to respond to email messages Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM- 12:00 PM.
