News from the Principal's Desk
Dear Tuscarora Families,
This has been a busy week, with only five days remaining for our Titan Seniors. This has been a challenging week for many, with the confirmation that we will not have a face to face graduation, and many of the other traditions that seniors spend years anticipating. While little of this was unexpected, it is still hits us all hard. It's challenging not to feel angry or unsatisfied with where we are. But we will celebrate the Class of 2020, and find creative ways to lift them up. If you took the time to read the special Senior Issue of the Titan Newsletter yesterday, hopefully you see the many ways that we are honoring this resilient group of Seniors. In particular, I have heard from so many of you how much you appreciated the Message from over 80 of our staff members to our seniors. If you haven't watch it, check out A Message to the Titan Class of 2020. You may have seen my tweet about the best part of my day. After we had finished putting up the 2020 Senior Banner in the front of the school, two Seniors driving by in separate cars stopped and took their pics with the banner. It was nice to have a face-to-face conversation (at a safe distance for all of us!) with Savannah and Gracie, and it reminded me how much we certainly all miss that. We look forward to seeing you as you pick up your cap and gowns next week, or if you choose to come into the building to have your picture taken on the auditorium stage the following week, and we look forward to creating a quality virtual graduation for you on June 11th.
Many of you received the traditional grade opt-in form from teachers this week. This is a reminder that parents need to fill out a form for each class if students are choosing a letter grade over the P/I-COL. Please make sure your child's name is on the form. The last date for seniors is May 22. If you have not heard from some of your teachers, they will be in contact next week. But please do not include requests for other classes on that specific teacher's form. We are also getting word from parents that it is difficult to complete this google form on an I Phone or I Pad. Please work to use a desktop, laptop or chromebook.
I want to commend all of the students who persevered and took AP exams this week. I heard from several of you that you were confident about how well you did on the exams, and look forward to getting the results. Here's to another week coming up with Titan students who do that last minute preparation for AP exams and feel equally as confident. I also want to commend the Titan AP Teachers who found creative ways to finish their courses and review/prepare students for the final push this week. These teachers modeled the persistence that they expected from all of their students. Thank you, AP Teachers.

Enjoy the weekend outside... seniors, we're at five days and counting!

The Online Yearbook is at Your Fingertips!
Want to see your 2020 Remember the Titans Yearbook? Well, the bad news is we still don’t have our physical copies due to the coronavirus. But, if you purchased a yearbook, we have great news for you: the 2020 Remember the Titans yearbook is now available as an app for your phone and/or tablet! Simply go to your app store and search: Plus One Digital Yearbook Herff Jones and download the app.
Instructions for logging in:
The app will allow you to download the online yearbook preview on up to five devices, so technically you could share the book with a friend who has yet to purchase a book! As soon as we have information concerning distribution of the printed books we will communicate that information to you. We anticipate a mid-June delivery of the physical books. Until then, take a look at your 2020 Remember the Titans yearbook!

College Board SAT plans for the Remainder of 2020
As the College Board responds to the impact of coronavirus, their top priority is the health and safety of students and educators. Right now, public health officials have made clear it is not safe to gather students in one place. As such, College Board will not be able to administer the SAT and Subject Tests as planned on June 6, 2020. Students will have opportunities to take the SAT to make up for this spring’s lost administrations. If it’s safe from a public health standpoint, they will provide weekend SAT administrations every month through the end of the calendar year, beginning in August. Students will be able to register for these administrations beginning in May. Later, they will communicate when the exact date is available. Students who were registered for June and those in the high school class of 2021, who do not have SAT scores will have early access to registration for the August, September, and October administrations.
Technology Support During Distance Learning
Mrs. Bush is the user support specialist (tech person) for THS. She is available to help teachers and students who have any issues using their devices as we adjust to learning from home over the next month or so. She will also assist students who are still in need of a Chromebook, Hot Spot or replacement equipment such as a charger. Although it may take a few days to secure an item for you, she is here to provide the best service possible.
Students with issues with the technology, please send an email to marie.bush@fcps.org or call her at 240-236-6640 between 7:00 am -2:00 pm Monday - Friday. Please leave a message with the student name and the issue you're having. She will work to address all issues in the order they are received. Once she has received a request and has returned your call or email she will arrange times for pick-up or drop-off of equipment. At this time all pick-up and drop-offs will occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm at THS. Prior to pick-up or drop-off you will receive final confirmation from Mrs. Bush.
Parent Help with Schoology
Most of our teachers at Tuscarora are using Schoology as our primary means of delivering information and activities as well as checking on students progress during the next four weeks of distance learning. If you have not already, we encourage all parents to join Schoology and connect to their child's Schoology accounts.
Here is the PDF of the sign-up guide for parents:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Go7GoCc2iWUhtfQ45141LpVpbouxaclF/view
Here are five short Schoology training videos for parents made by FCPS:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DOSiPygdlg&list=PLukX28g2mPZhmDtZT4XrUz4pzLLHUAAXw
Your child's teachers are able to provide you with your student's unique Schoology access code. All students are already able to log in and use Schoology. This code will allow parents to connect to their student's accounts.
If you are having trouble or have questions regarding Schoology, please email Ms. Jorgensen at Judith.Jorgensen@fcps.org

You teachers, instructors and Titan staff miss you seniors, and wanted to take some time to honor you with this special tribute. There are over 80 slides for all of your favorite Titan Teachers and Staff Members with special messages just for the graduates. Please sit back and take some time to view this presentation, so that you really know how much you are missed, and our wishes for your future.
To the THS Class of 2020
Senior Awards Ceremony
Since there will be no face-to-face senior awards ceremony, there will be a virtual senior awards ceremony. This video will be released in June, just prior to our virtual graduation in a YouTube format. Students who are receiving awards will receive an email. The email will not say what award is being received.
School Decorating and Celebration Senior Banner
If you haven’t driven by the school in a few days, we’ve decorated many of the large exterior windows in honor of the Class of 2020. In addition, on Friday, May 15, we will proudly display a large banner in front of the school on the Ballenger Creek side.Once you receive your cap and gown, feel free to come by and take a picture next to this celebratory banner, courtesy of the administration and staff of Tuscarora High School.
Class of 2020 Posters
When seniors come to pick up their cap and gown on Thursday, May 21st, each graduate will receive a special color 11x17 Tuscarora Titan poster honoring the class of 2020. The poster is suitable to be staked to the lawn, for your room, or perhaps a dorm room next fall. Wherever you fall, you’ll always be a Titan.
Photo Opportunity on the Tuscarora Titan Auditorium Stage in Your Cap and Gown
See below for details of how we are inviting you, in a safe manner, to come to the Tuscarora High School auditorium with a maximum of four of your family members to have a photo opportunity in your cap and gown and receive your diploma cover (without the actual diploma - that will come later). The Tuscarora Administrative Staff will also take a photo and feature these cap and gown pictures in a montage at the end of the virtual graduation ceremony. This is an OPTIONAL activity. With COVID-19, we recognize that all families will not feel comfortable with the close proximity of this event. Cap and gown photos that graduates or family members take on their own at a location of their choosing may be submitted separately and will also be featured in the photo montage at the conclusion of the Tuscarora Virtual Graduation Ceremony.

Last Day for The Class of 2020
Before the end of this day, you need to have completed:
Opt-in Grade Information - if you wish to have a traditional grade for you classes, you have to have indicated this to your teacher in the google form that each teacher provided. The default grade on the transcript will be pass/incomplete, unless you opt-in for a traditional letter grade.
Senior Survey - It’s in Naviance and asks questions such as your Post-Secondary plans (college, military, work, etc.) It also asks a question about scholarship money. The question is asking what is the TOTAL scholarship amount you have been offered, regardless of whether you accepted the scholarship money or not. Please provide feedback to the counselors on how we can improve our program and what has gone well with it.
Update Naviance - 1. Please indicate where you have been accepted, denied, and/or waitlisted. Why? Without others knowing your name, you will help your THS underclassmen in knowing statistics for being accepted into certain colleges.
2. Please indicate the college you are choosing to attend. Why? Counselors need to know where to send your final transcript. Without your final transcript, colleges can rescind their offer of acceptance or rescind their offer for a scholarship.
Go into your Naviance account, click on "Colleges I'm Applying To" and you will find the places to do these 2 items.

Counseling Office Updates
Students Please Check your "my.fcps.org" Email Everyday
It is so important that every student check their “ my.fcps.org” email every day. Your School Counselors and other THS staff members are using this email address to give you important information, including schedules, Naviance information and career and college planning.
Juniors and Seniors! Common Black College Application
Check out the Common Black College Application at https://commonblackcollegeapp.com. This is a website where JUNIORS and Seniors can apply to all 55 HBCU colleges with 1 application, 1 test score and your transcript for $30. This is a temporary price cut to help students during this difficult time. Yes, Juniors, too (but be sure to enter the correct enrollment date of Fall 2021)!!
Virtual Counseling Meetings with All Students
Students who have yet to meet with their counselor this academic year will be receiving an email over the following few weeks. This email will come to your FCPS gmail account, so please check it regularly. The email will include a copy of the student's transcript, a Graduation Requirement Record and a link for a YouTube video explaining content of the packet that is typically handed out.
Seniors Attending Higher Education
With all of the things you now need to contend with, we need to ask you to please take a couple steps in your Naviance account.
#1 Please indicate where you have been accepted, denied, and/or waitlisted. Why? Without others knowing your name, you will help your THS underclassmen in knowing statistics for being accepted into certain colleges. It helps them to determine if they should make the effort to apply to a certain school.
#2 Please indicate the college you are choosing to attend. Why? As counselors, we need to know where to send your final transcript. Without your final transcript, colleges can rescind their offer of acceptance or rescind their offer for a scholarship.
Please take care and let your counselor know if you have any questions!
Senior Counseling Updates
SCHOLARSHIPS: Continue to monitor scholarships on Naviance. Updated deadlines are being added as they are received.
NEED A TRANSCRIPT? Please request via Naviance or contact your counselor directly. If you are applying for a scholarship that is requesting an official transcript, you should let your counselor know. The counselor can email your transcript directly to the scholarship committee. If you need an unofficial transcript, let your counselor know. The counselor will email a copy of your transcript to you, directly.
NEED A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION? Please contact your counselor and/or teacher directly. Please note, most students have "waived" their rights to seeing the counselor and teacher letters. Because of this, counselors and teachers are obligated to send the letters directly to the scholarship committee, instead of the student. Students should share the scholarship committee's email address with the counselor and teacher, and the counselor and teacher will send the letter(s) directly.
A Message From the THS Counseling Department
We hope this message finds you and your family safe and healthy. The THS Counselors recognize that students may need assistance during this time. If you need assistance from your counselor, please contact us! Counselors will be available to respond to email messages Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM- 12:00 PM.
