News from the Principal's Desk
Dear Tuscarora Families,
It's been a big week with Continuation of Learning, as we began the introduction of Google Meet conferencing with students and teachers. A number of teachers have gotten underway with this additional aspect of distance learning, and many more will be joining on in the coming weeks. I am pleased to report that nearly 700 families have successfully completed the online Parent Consent Form, and their students are ready to begin using Google Meet. The teachers who have gotten started are reporting good results - student are getting more in depth direction and clarification on assignments. Tutoring is helping those students who normally would be raising their hands in class. And perhaps equally as important, teachers and students are just genuinely happy to see each other. Thank you for good early results, and if you need the link to the Parent Consent Form, it is here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdJCkMubnrWr40cKeBWy1A5zA7SerJk-UfzZ3Hm1QgwNoSEAA/viewform
Tonight, THS and every FCPS High School will be honoring all athletes from the Class of 2020 with a meaningful moment at the school. At 8:20pm (20:20 in military time), for 20 minutes, we will illuminate the stadium lights and light up the scoreboard one more time. We want to honor all Senior Titan Athletes, but especially those who didn't get the opportunity to play this spring. In this brief moment tonight, pause wherever you are, and remember these athletes - the competitive fire within them, the sense of sportsmanship they exemplified, and how well they represented our school as Titans. Thank you, Class of 2020 Athletes!
Next week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. While we normally might give a token appreciation to teachers during normal times, it's challenging to do that right now. So I'm going to ask all Titan Students and Parents to consider the best gift of all - your sincere words. Take the time this weekend, or next week to compose a brief email to a teacher or staff member at Tuscarora who has made a difference for you this semester, this year, or at any point during your high school career. Teachers and staff love this simple act of kindness. It's personal and meaningful. Take the time, open up a couple of emails and let your teachers know that what they do matters.
A few people have asked about cleaning out lockers or retrieving items from the school building. Unfortunately our building is still off limits to the public. We will formulate a plan once local and state officials give us the go ahead.
We had a record number of students nominated by teachers for the Student of the Week this week. It's awesome to see how much students have persevered in a different learning environment. Frankly, you all are heroes to me, and Students of the Week to us all. But I hope in some way, if you see your name, you know that your hard work has not gone unrecognized by your teachers and THS staff members. It's also great to see that the senior recognition emails have started to come in to me. Don't be shy Seniors and Senior Parents. Let us know the good news about your future so that we can all celebrate Titan greatness!
Here's this week's Announcements: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brssyaQnICI&feature=youtu.be
Enjoy the weekend... get outside if you are able, and keep those around you well!

An Important Message for All Tuscarora Students Taking AP Exams
We are just over a week away from the start of AP exams. All AP exams will be administered in an online format and take 45 minutes. AP Exams begin on Monday, May 11, 2020. Prior to test day, it is critical that students have completed the following steps to ensure a positive testing experience.
Parents and students should view the 2020 AP Testing Guide which is designed to help students walk through their test day. The guide provides information about the AP Exam e-ticket, the five important steps to take prior to test day, understanding the test day experience, and exam scores, credit and placement.
https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/pdf/ap-testing-guide-2020.pdf?SFMC_cid=EM305179-&rid=123429682
Starting on May 4, you can access an AP 2020 Exam Demo at ap2020examdemo.collegeboard.org/?excmpid=mtg638-2-gd. This demo will allow students to practice the different ways to submit their responses. Completing this demo will help confirm that testing devices will be able to access and run the online exam. If you can't connect to this demo from your planned testing device, you'll not be able to access the real exam on test day. The final slide of the Testing Guide has troubleshooting tips. The content in this demo is the same for all users and should not be considered a practice exam.
ALL AP STUDENTS SHOULD TAKE THIS IMPORTANT PREPARATION STEP TO AVOID POTENTIAL ISSUES ON EXAM DAY
Print and complete the 2020 AP Exam Checklist for each exam. Students should keep this next to them while testing. Students should have their AP ID readily available.
https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/pdf/ap-student-exam-day-checklist.pdf?SFMC_cid=EM305179-&rid=123429682
The College Board has put out several videos that provide students quick, easily accessible information about their test day experience, what they need to do to prepare, exam security, and more. Take some time to browse the available videos.

Important Yearbook Information!
In the midst of all this craziness, you might be wondering "What about Yearbooks?" Well the good news is that the Remember the Titans yearbook staff worked diligently to finish our book, even though we weren't physically in school . Unfortunately the printer closed within a week of us finishing our book. What we can tell you is that the books will be printed and shipped, this is a guarantee. What we can't tell you right now is how or when we will distribute the books. We are currently working on launching a yearbook app for students who pre-ordered a book so that, until they can get their hard copy book, they can enjoy the yearbook on their devices. We will be publishing information about at late next week so stay tuned...
If you have any yearbook related questions, please contact Mr. Hartman directly at richard.hartman@fcps.org

College Board SAT plans for the remainder of 2020
As the College Board responds to the impact of coronavirus, their top priority is the health and safety of students and educators. Right now, public health officials have made clear it is not safe to gather students in one place. As such, College Board will not be able to administer the SAT and Subject Tests as planned on June 6, 2020. Students will have opportunities to take the SAT to make up for this spring’s lost administrations. If it’s safe from a public health standpoint, they will provide weekend SAT administrations every month through the end of the calendar year, beginning in August. Students will be able to register for these administrations beginning in May. Later, they will communicate when the exact date is available. Students who were registered for June and those in the high school class of 2021, who do not have SAT scores will have early access to registration for the August, September, and October administrations.
Technology Support During Distance Learning
Mrs. Bush is the user support specialist (tech person) for THS. She is available to help teachers and students who have any issues using their devices as we adjust to learning from home over the next month or so. She will also assist students who are still in need of a Chromebook, Hot Spot or replacement equipment such as a charger. Although it may take a few days to secure an item for you, she is here to provide the best service possible.
Students with issues with the technology, please send an email to marie.bush@fcps.org or call her at 240-236-6640 between 7:00 am -2:00 pm Monday - Friday. Please leave a message with the student name and the issue you're having. She will work to address all issues in the order they are received. Once she has received a request and has returned your call or email she will arrange times for pick-up or drop-off of equipment. At this time all pick-up and drop-offs will occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm at THS. Prior to pick-up or drop-off you will receive final confirmation from Mrs. Bush.
Parent Help with Schoology
Most of our teachers at Tuscarora are using Schoology as our primary means of delivering information and activities as well as checking on students progress during the next four weeks of distance learning. If you have not already, we encourage all parents to join Schoology and connect to their child's Schoology accounts.
Here is the PDF of the sign-up guide for parents:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Go7GoCc2iWUhtfQ45141LpVpbouxaclF/view
Here are five short Schoology training videos for parents made by FCPS:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DOSiPygdlg&list=PLukX28g2mPZhmDtZT4XrUz4pzLLHUAAXw
Your child's teachers are able to provide you with your student's unique Schoology access code. All students are already able to log in and use Schoology. This code will allow parents to connect to their student's accounts.
If you are having trouble or have questions regarding Schoology, please email Ms. Jorgensen at Judith.Jorgensen@fcps.org

Counseling Office Updates
Students Please Check your "my.fcps.org" Email Everyday
It is so important that every student check their “ my.fcps.org” email every day. Your School Counselors and other THS staff members are using this email address to give you important information, including schedules, Naviance information and career and college planning.
Virtual Counseling Meetings with All Students
Students who have yet to meet with their counselor this academic year will be receiving an email over the following few weeks. This email will come to your FCPS gmail account, so please check it regularly. The email will include a copy of the student's transcript, a Graduation Requirement Record and a link for a YouTube video explaining content of the packet that is typically handed out.
THS 2020 Senior Survey The 2020 Senior Survey will be made live soon on Naviance. Starting Monday, April 27, 2020, Seniors will be able to complete their Senior Survey. It asks questions such as your Post-Secondary plans (college, military, work, etc.) It also asks a question about scholarship money. The question is asking what is the TOTAL scholarship amount you have been offered, regardless of whether you accepted the scholarship money or not. We understand that students are offered scholarship many to various colleges, and we are asking you to include that total amount. Also, the survey asks questions that gives feedback to the counselors on how we can improve our program and what has gone well with it.

Seniors Attending Higher Education
With all of the things you now need to contend with, we need to ask you to please take a couple steps in your Naviance account.
#1 Please indicate where you have been accepted, denied, and/or waitlisted. Why? Without others knowing your name, you will help your THS underclassmen in knowing statistics for being accepted into certain colleges. It helps them to determine if they should make the effort to apply to a certain school.
#2 Please indicate the college you are choosing to attend. Why? As counselors, we need to know where to send your final transcript. Without your final transcript, colleges can rescind their offer of acceptance or rescind their offer for a scholarship.
Go into your Naviance account, click on "Colleges I'm Applying To" and you will find the places to do these 2 items.
Please take care and let your counselor know if you have any questions!
Senior Counseling Updates
SCHOLARSHIPS: Continue to monitor scholarships on Naviance. Updated deadlines are being added as they are received.
UPDATE YOUR NAVIANCE ACCOUNT: Please continue to log onto Naviance and update your account - acceptances to colleges, etc. If you have difficulty logging into Naviance, please click Forgot My Password.
NEED A TRANSCRIPT? Please request via Naviance or contact your counselor directly. If you are applying for a scholarship that is requesting an official transcript, you should let your counselor know. The counselor can email your transcript directly to the scholarship committee. If you need an unofficial transcript, let your counselor know. The counselor will email a copy of your transcript to you, directly.
NEED A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION? Please contact your counselor and/or teacher directly. Please note, most students have "waived" their rights to seeing the counselor and teacher letters. Because of this, counselors and teachers are obligated to send the letters directly to the scholarship committee, instead of the student. Students should share the scholarship committee's email address with the counselor and teacher, and the counselor and teacher will send the letter(s) directly.
A Message From the THS Counseling Department
We hope this message finds you and your family safe and healthy. The THS Counselors recognize that students may need assistance during this time. If you need assistance from your counselor, please contact us! Counselors will be available to respond to email messages Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM- 12:00 PM.
