News from the Principal's Desk
Dear Tuscarora Families,
Hopefully your week of distance learning is starting off well. My hope is that all of your teachers have been specific with you at this point about the changes to the grading policy and how you can best be successful this term. If you have not already, please take a careful look at the message pushed out by FCPS about grading changes for the 4th Term. In addition, there will be changes made to grading categories that make up your overall grade. In short, there is now one, simple category that all assignments go into, a total points system versus weighted categories. The hope is that your grade will be very simple to compute at this point - total points possible divided by the points you earned. It's very straightforward.
The one message that I touch on in the video announcements this week (link below) that is worth repeating is this - you owe it to yourself, your family and your future to try your best. Much of what you learn now will be built upon next year. Colleges and universities that you are applying to want to see that you gave your best during this unique and challenging learning time. Just because you may have options to not work as hard as you normally doesn't mean you should take that option. And some families have challenges that are not related to school right now. Whatever the situation may be, give the best you can at this time, and seek help from your teachers, counselors and other adults at THS when you need it.
I would encourage families who have GOOD NEWS or accomplishments to send them to me at christopher.berry@fcps.org so that we can all celebrate. This is a special invitation, in particular, for seniors who are receiving those college or post secondary invitations or scholarships. Let us know the good news so that we can all celebrate Titan greatness!
There is a good deal of new information from the School Counseling Department this week, as well as scholoarship and summer job information. Parents and students both should check it out.
I should have some basic information in the near future about what form our graduation for the class of 2020 is going to take. If you have ideas, please take the survey below, or send me an email. I'm curious to hear your ideas!
Here's this week's announcements, with a great message from the members of our English department, and some important information for Seniors:

Keeping You Informed - School News
Athletics Update from Mr. Putterman, THS Athletic Director
I hope that you are all still safe and healthy (both physically and mentally) as we all struggle to find our way. In case you are counting, we are approaching a month of quarantine now, and it was 75 and sunny two days ago, but snowed today! There is no real news in terms of Athletics Updates, but it has been a while since i touched base with you all so I thought I would give you any information I have. This continues to be the most current update from MPSSAA and it uses the word "suspended" from https://www.mpssaa.org/update-2-on-the-current-status-of-public-high-school-interscholastic-athletics.
In accordance with the actions of the State Superintendent of Schools and the Maryland State Board of Education earlier this week, all interscholastic athletic team gatherings, activities, practices, and contests are suspended until further notice. The MPSSAA will remain vigilant regarding interscholastic athletics and the health and safety of students and school communities. The MPSSAA will continue to work collaboratively with the MSDE and other relevant state agencies to determine the best route for interscholastic athletics to resume.
Once a state-wide (MPSSAA/MSDE) decision regarding interscholastic athletics is made, then FCPS leadership will address questions regarding Athletic Fees - continue to hold off on paying these. If you have already paid, once decisions are made, refunds will be appropriately processed if necessary. Finally, the MPSSAA Student Leadership Conference (in June) cancelled for this year. Unfortunately, we really don't have answers to much yet. I do promise that as soon as I hear/know something I will pass it on. Keep safe, stay healthy and don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have questions or concerns. Howard.Putterman@fcps.org. To steal from one of the great Tuscarora Coaches... #WeWillPlayAgain

College Board SAT plans for the remainder of 2020
As the College Board responds to the impact of coronavirus, their top priority is the health and safety of students and educators. Right now, public health officials have made clear it is not safe to gather students in one place. As such, College Board will not be able to administer the SAT and Subject Tests as planned on June 6, 2020. Students will have opportunities to take the SAT to make up for this spring’s lost administrations. If it’s safe from a public health standpoint, they will provide weekend SAT administrations every month through the end of the calendar year, beginning in August. Students will be able to register for these administrations beginning in May. Later, they will communicate when the exact date is available. Students who were registered for June and those in the high school class of 2021, who do not have SAT scores will have early access to registration for the August, September, and October administrations.
AP Exam Schedule 2020 - AP Coronavirus Updates
The College Board has released the new dates and times for the 2020 Advanced Placement exams. Please note that Frederick County Public Schools is located in the Eastern Time Zone: https://apcoronavirusupdates.collegeboard.org/educators/taking-the-exams/ap-exam-schedule
All exams will be administered via an internet-connected device. Each exam is 45 minutes.
FCPS-issued Chromebooks will work for the exam if connected to a reliable internet source.
If you need assistance with technology for taking an AP exam, please reach out directly to the College Board: https://collegeboard.tfaforms.net/74
In late April, the College Board will provide AP students and educators with information on how to access the testing system on test day, and video demonstrations so that students can familiarize themselves with the system prior to testing. Learn more here: https://apcoronavirusupdates.collegeboard.org/educators/taking-the-exams
The College Board is offering many AP instructional resources free to students during this time. As students prepare for AP test(s), they may use these resources: https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/coronavirus-updates#free-ap-classes
Technology Support During Distance Learning
Mrs. Bush is the user support specialist (tech person) for THS. She is available to help teachers and students who have any issues using their devices as we adjust to learning from home over the next month or so. She will also assist students who are still in need of a Chromebook, Hot Spot or replacement equipment such as a charger. Although it may take a few days to secure an item for you, she is here to provide the best service possible.
Students with issues with the technology, please send an email to marie.bush@fcps.org or call her at 240-236-6640 between 7:00 am -2:00 pm Monday - Friday. Please leave a message with the student name and the issue you're having. She will work to address all issues in the order they are received. Once she has received a request and has returned your call or email she will arrange times for pick-up or drop-off of equipment. At this time all pick-up and drop-offs will occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm at THS. Prior to pick-up or drop-off you will receive final confirmation from Mrs. Bush.
Parent Help with Schoology
Most of our teachers at Tuscarora are using Schoology as our primary means of delivering information and activities as well as checking on students progress during the next four weeks of distance learning. If you have not already, we encourage all parents to join Schoology and connect to their child's Schoology accounts.
Here is the PDF of the sign-up guide for parents:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Go7GoCc2iWUhtfQ45141LpVpbouxaclF/view
Here are five short Schoology training videos for parents made by FCPS:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DOSiPygdlg&list=PLukX28g2mPZhmDtZT4XrUz4pzLLHUAAXw
Your child's teachers are able to provide you with your student's unique Schoology access code. All students are already able to log in and use Schoology. This code will allow parents to connect to their student's accounts.
If you are having trouble or have questions regarding Schoology, please email Ms. Jorgensen at Judith.Jorgensen@fcps.org
Important Dual Enrollment Information
All Dual Enrollment students are expected to check their Frederick Community College communications (email and Blackboard) for updates about college courses: https://myfcc.frederick.edu/portal.aspx.

All high school based 15-week courses will now end on Friday, May 22. Please be sure to note any changes to your syllabus timeline provided to you by your instructor.
Open Campus Frederick Community College is not closed during this time and has moved instead to distance learning for these two weeks. Please follow all directions from your professors to continue your academic program.

As a result of the decision to close schools for an extended period of time, the Tuscarora High School Junior-Senior Prom will not take place on April 24. Despite this disappointing news, we are hopeful that we will still be able to offer our Juniors and Seniors a prom experience at some point during this school year. We are not in a position yet to choose a new date or make revised plans regarding prom, because we do not yet know the extent or end date for the current school closure. We will work within the guidance we receive regarding the status of schools after April 24 and will make plans at that time.

Counseling Office Updates
Virtual Counseling Meetings with All Students
Students who have yet to meet with their counselor this academic year will be receiving an email over the following few weeks. This email will come to your FCPS gmail account, so please check it regularly. The email will include a copy of the student's transcript, a Graduation Requirement Record and a link for a YouTube video explaining content of the packet that is typically handed out.
THS 2020 Senior Survey The 2020 Senior Survey will be made live soon on Naviance. Starting Monday, April 27, 2020, Seniors will be able to complete their Senior Survey. It asks questions such as your Post-Secondary plans (college, military, work, etc.) It also asks a question about scholarship money. The question is asking what is the TOTAL scholarship amount you have been offered, regardless of whether you accepted the scholarship money or not. We understand that students are offered scholarship many to various colleges, and we are asking you to include that total amount. Also, the survey asks questions that gives feedback to the counselors on how we can improve our program and what has gone well with it.

Seniors Attending Higher Education
With all of the things you now need to contend with, we need to ask you to please take a couple steps in your Naviance account.
#1 Please indicate where you have been accepted, denied, and/or waitlisted. Why? Without others knowing your name, you will help your THS underclassmen in knowing statistics for being accepted into certain colleges. It helps them to determine if they should make the effort to apply to a certain school.
#2 Please indicate the college you are choosing to attend. Why? As counselors, we need to know where to send your final transcript. Without your final transcript, colleges can rescind their offer of acceptance or rescind their offer for a scholarship.
Go into your Naviance account, click on "Colleges I'm Applying To" and you will find the places to do these 2 items.
Please take care and let your counselor know if you have any questions!
Students Please Check your "my.fcps.org" Email Everyday
It is so important that every student check their “ my.fcps.org” email every day. Your School Counselors and other THS staff members are using this email address to give you important information, including schedules, Naviance information and career and college planning.
Senior Counseling Updates
SCHOLARSHIPS: Continue to monitor scholarships on Naviance. Updated deadlines are being added as they are received.
UPDATE YOUR NAVIANCE ACCOUNT: Please continue to log onto Naviance and update your account - acceptances to colleges, etc. If you have difficulty logging into Naviance, please click Forgot My Password.
NEED A TRANSCRIPT? Please request via Naviance or contact your counselor directly. If you are applying for a scholarship that is requesting an official transcript, you should let your counselor know. The counselor can email your transcript directly to the scholarship committee. If you need an unofficial transcript, let your counselor know. The counselor will email a copy of your transcript to you, directly.
NEED A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION? Please contact your counselor and/or teacher directly. Please note, most students have "waived" their rights to seeing the counselor and teacher letters. Because of this, counselors and teachers are obligated to send the letters directly to the scholarship committee, instead of the student. Students should share the scholarship committee's email address with the counselor and teacher, and the counselor and teacher will send the letter(s) directly.
A Message From the THS Counseling Department
We hope this message finds you and your family safe and healthy. The THS Counselors recognize that students may need assistance during this time. If you need assistance from your counselor, please contact us! Counselors will be available to respond to email messages Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM- 12:00 PM.
