News from the Principal's Desk
Dear Tuscarora Families,
This week has been about a number of celebrations - students, student groups and teachers. In particular, I'd like you to join me in celebrating our mock trial team, which went undefeated in the regular season and will participate in the playoffs beginning on February 25th. The team receives a case in the fall, complete with background, evidence, witnesses and charges. They organize themselves into prosecutors, defenders and witnesses, each with a role to play. The team works with adults and an outside attorney to be prepared on both the prosecution and defense sides. It is challenging, complex and exciting work. I'm very proud of what this team has accomplished this year, and the commitment they've made to this fun competition.
In addition, we had two teachers who finished their National Board Certification recently and are to be celebrated - Ms. Crowell and Mr. Hall. Both science teachers engaged in a monthlong process in numerous teaching areas of research, reflection and written examination to reach this status. They are to be commended as master teachers at Tuscarora.
This along with our ongoing students of the week and teachers of the month and many others just reinforces that we are a school and community with many people and groups to celebrate. As many of you may know, one of our students of the week, Emily Miller, saved a mans life while performing CPR over the winter break. While this level of recognition may seem like an atypical week, it reinforces that we are a school and community with many people and groups to celebrate.
One quick reminder - if you are coming to visit, please use the visiting parking places in front of the school. The numbered spots in front of the school are assigned to students. While they may appear to be empty when you arrive, students come and go during different times of the day based on the programs they are involved with outside the building. When a visitor takes a numbered spot, it sometimes creates a cascading loss of parking effect. Thank you for your understanding.
Enjoy the holiday weekend and an extra day off on Monday!

Out of District Families
FCPS publishes a list of restricted schools annually. Parents and guardians must renew out-of-district transfers for students every year. Parents or guardians who wish to request an out-of-district transfer must apply by completing the appropriate form, online at www.fcps.org in the section labeled For Families and Students, through March 1, 2020. Those seeking to renew a request approved for the current school year must re-apply online, also by March 1, 2020. Families will be notified of the decision by April 1, 2020. For assistance completing the form, families may call 240-236-2493. FCPS will restrict out-of-district transfers at 32 schools in the 2020-2021 school year, in accordance with FCPS Regulation 400-78.
Based on enrollment projections, the following schools will be at or near 100% capacity when schools open in August 2020. Consequently, their enrollment is limited only to those students who reside within each school's attendance area.
Restricted high schools are: Frederick, Urbana, and Walkersville
The at-capacity schools that are restricted for out-of-district transfers in September 2020 will continue under that designation for the 2020-2021 school year. School designations are re-evaluated annually based on projections.
