News from the Principal's Desk
Dear Titan Families,
We're down to five school days until a long winter break this year. I've been pleased that our students have been hanging in there academically, and seem to be focused as we get close to the mid-term grade point. Contrary to the common myth, there is good deal of focused instruction planned next week at Tuscarora.
Counselors and administrators continued their visits this week in 9-11th grade Flex class to discuss registration for the 2020-21 school year. Many of you may have already seen this information fro your child, and at this point we have spoken to most 9th and 11th grade students. Sophomores are primarily next week. Every child will be bringing home registration information, cards and course descriptions before the holidays. As I mentioned in the newsletter last week, parents should educate themselves about the registration process. Look at the materials, discuss these with your child. How many required courses do they have? What are the options? Last week I wrote about the value of our in-house elective courses. This week, I'd like to focus on taking challenging coursework. Increasingly, colleges and universities are lessening the importance or going away from standardized testing such as the SAT and ACT granting acceptance. Depending on the institution, many are more focused on students grades and the level of challenge that students attempt in high school. For this reason, now more than ever, I would encourage you to think about the level of rigor of the courses you select for the coming year. Have you never taken any honors course? Perhaps now is the time to take one or one more in 2020-21. Have you taken honors courses, but are looking to increase the challenge? Consider adding in an advanced placement or a dual enrollment course from FCC that also grants high school credit. When you teachers and counselors recommend/challenge you to consider these rigorous courses it is because (1) they believe you are capable of succeeding and (2) want to prepare you for more opportunities after high school. To help you know where courses fall on the difficulty scale, Tuscarora developed an "academic intensity course list" which will come home with your child as part of their registration materials. This guide is color-coded so that you can determine the workload/intensity factor of all of the courses THS offers. Are you challenging yourself enough? Will you academic transcript reflect that you not only got acceptable grades, but you pushed yourself? These are necessary question that all THS students and families should be asking before finishing up the registration form. Here is a link to the entire county course guide so that you have a sense of the possibilities. https://www.fcps.org/academics/high-school-course-guides1
We had two honor society inductions this week, and stories on both are listed below. Our National English Honor Society has really grown over the past two years and has taken on new service opportunities. In addition, I want to congratulate the Titan computer science students, under the leadership of computer science teacher Mary Bishop, for founding the Computer Science Honor Society. Over the past couple of years, our course offerings in comp sci have increased, as students and society recognize the value of coding and having knowledge of the cyber world. Computer courses are no longer for students who simply look to major in computer science. In fact, having a little working knowledge on coding, web design and graphics has become to this generation what knowing Microsoft Office or keyboarding skills were to previous generations. Need a tech ed credit? Consider signing up for Principles of Computer Science. It sound ominous to some, but it doesn't require any specialized knowledge of math and is designed to be an intro to the computer world. I tell students... it will open many doors you never even knew were there!
Have a great weekend, Christopher Berry Principal

English Class Making a Difference for Teens in Our Community
During the month of December, Mrs Nickles’ English 11 class is asking all first block classes to act as a team to donate to the SHIP organization. SHIP stands for The Frederick County Student Homlessness Initiative Partnership. SHIP assists students, including several at Tuscarora, who do not have permanent housing and who’s daily struggle prevent them from focusing on school. The class will be collecting personal hygiene products including: Female products, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, deodorant, soap and body wash. We will be collecting donations from Monday December 2 - Thursday December 19. The first block that collects the most hygiene products will win donuts and an additional surprise from Mr. Berry. Please collect these products now and next month send your student in with travel size containers or full size hygiene products. This helps make a simple, but important difference in the life of a teen that most of us take for granted – to feel and look clean to those around us. If you have any questions you can contact Mrs. Nickles by email: meredith.nickles@fcps.org.
Titan Free Store
The Titan Free Store is in dire need of the following items for the Titan Pantry to provide meals to our homeless and food insecure students and families on the weekends: juice boxes / bags, crackers, canned soup, peanut butter, jelly, fruit cups, water, ready-made meals (shelf stable and microwaveable) and Easy Mac. Please drop any donations in the front office! And please know that ANY and ALL donations are so very appreciated! Questions? meredith.nickles@fcps.org
WANT TO BE AN ACTIVE PART OF THIS ELECTION?
Representatives from the League of Women Voters and Board of Elections will be conducting a voter registration drive at THS on Tuesday December 17 at lunchtime in the cafeteria. Students who are at least 16 years old can register; you must be 18 as of November 3, 2020 to vote. Please bring your MVA license/permit – if you don’t have one, your social security card number (all kept confidential). Any student who is at least 16 years old and registered to vote may sign up to work at the polls as an Election Judge in April. Election Day is a school holiday. (Parental permission needed if 16 or 17) The positions are paid.
Writing Assistance for ALL Students

Two THS Teachers Become Nationally Board Certified
A huge “job well done” to Trish Crowell and Kevin Hall for completing the recertification/certification process to become a Nationally Board Certified Teacher. If you have completed this process or know someone who has, you know it is a challenging, multi-step certification that requires the candidate to analyze and reflect on multiple aspects of their teaching. There is an comprehensive assessment module. Candidate certification is good for a multi-year period.
Computer Science Honor Society Inductees
On Monday, the Computer Science Honor Society held its inaugural Induction Ceremony. To apply for membership, students needed to have been at Tuscarora for at least one semester, have a GPA of at least 3.0, and have successfully completed one of our rigorous Computer Science courses. Students who met these basic criteria were invited to apply. We were delighted and proud to welcome these thirty-six students as our charter members. As one of only 111 currently nationwide, Tuscarora has the distinction of being one of the first high schools to have a Computer Science Honor Society.
National English Honor Society Inductees
The Tuscarora Chapter of the National English Honor Society inducted 48 new members on Wednesday, Dec. 11th. Students had to achieve 3.0 overall GPA and a 3.5 English GPA. Additionally students had to be nominated by their English teachers and complete an essay as part of the NEHS application. Congratulations to the students who achieved this honor!
